City declared champions last night with less fanfare than the average Super Sunday game. A heavily rotated team that never really left second gear against a jaded league. Worthy, predictable win.

No relegation battle to speak of. Current bottom 3 have been down for ages.

Under performing big sides with every other club bar West ham seemingly not interested in over taking them.

No iconic goals or players that took over the season.

No fans.

Has felt like one long pre season, or is it just me? The positive as a United fan is that we do seem to be improving.

Yes and no fans should be the main reason. The entire atmosphere around football has been so flat and boring this year. I've found it difficult to care how well we're doing at times.

Good on the staff/players for getting on with things etc

No fans takes away most of it. Can’t wait until they’re back in next week.

Don't think I've finished watching any game not involving United this year. Incredibly boring without fans.

Definitely feels that post lockdown end of 19/20 and this season 20/21 have been the same season

Most memorable things about it, from a United perspective, will be Cavani and all the comebacks.

But I agree, generally a boring PL season.

I don't watch much football other than United games, but seeing our transformation through the season was fascinating for me.

In the words of Busby,

"Football is nothing without fans"

It's been nice to have something to watch obviously throughout this miserable pandemic but it just feels very empty watching it without fans, the heart has literally been ripped out of football and it will be amazing to be back there very very soon.

The problem I have found is that even when we have had some great wins you feel as though it is a moment in time that will always be missing something when you look back at it due to the atmosphere.

It may be the most anticlimactic title win of all time, that is quite amusing.

I have enjoyed this season more than the Jose or LVG period apart from the LVG pressers.

Not just the crowd, but the overall environment is rather gloomy with waves after waves of Covid-19 and tens of thousands of people dying every day around the world. Football isn’t the most important thing when 4 million (++) people have died from the virus in the last 18 months.

Agree. Bar some of our games it was incredibly boring. Only things that made it funny were the failures of Arteta, Mourinho and Lampard (even this one was taken away by Tuchel). The Champions League was shit to watch too.

With the relegation and title races being non-events in the end, it means the season is petering out for sure. But some interesting things happened over the season

- Liverpool's worse ever title defence
- 9 different teams topping the table
- More than half the teams being better away than at home. (Only 3 teams have done that in the previous 3 seasons combined)
- some weird big scorelines - the Liverpool 7-2 loss, our 6-1 defeat, our 9-0 win, Liverpool 7-0 win, West Broms 5-2 win away to Chelsea

Not a vintage season by any means though.

It’s lack of fans that’s done it. I’ve never felt so disengaged with football, despite us being better than we’ve been for many years. Timing could be good, with the stadiums being full next season.

The best trianing ground team in the world is winning everything without fans. Lets all laugh at Utd didnt happen and its too early to mock Liverpool because theyre still the medias darlings.
As soon as Jose left, the fun stopped

It’s because City won the title. No one gives a feck. When other teams trade top spot, there’s banter on all social media. When it’s City, they all shrug their shoulders.

It's been a grind of a season, playing twice a week for the entire season with no fans will do that. The super league nonsense put a huge black stain on the season as well, for every club involved I'd imagine. Going to take some time to repair those relationships, but having the fans back in the grounds will help.

Not really. An entire season without fans + a pretty ridiculous schedule is already pretty damn memorable and unique. And then there's the ESL stuff and all the fan protests.

From a sporting point of view it's pretty forgettable, I agree. But as a United supporter it's easily been the most enjoyable season post Fergie, so there's that.

I used to go to about 25 games a season so it has definitely been a long slog to watch football being played in empty stadiums strictly from my living room.

I always want Chelsea to win as many trophies as possible, but I said long ago that whatever we win this season pales in emotional significance to anything Chelsea won before 2020. Winning the Champions League? Great, I'd be buzzing but it wouldn't even come close to being in the same ballpark as 2012 Munich.

You can cheers yourself up that if stuff doesn’t magically go south you should be able to watch a very sexy looking Chelsea side live next year.

but yes, this season surely feels slightly less “serious”, starting mid September was weird already, no fans killed a lot of vibe, not much league drama.

Agree- football without fans seems almost meaningless. I’ve found it hard to stay interested.

It's just such a write off season - teams having to play unfit players and under strength with absentees out with covid, some teams getting longer rests due to postponements, others getting fecked over with fixture lists, VAR continuously rewriting it's already rewritten rules and massively affecting the table at both ends. There was excitement early on because it was a free for all but it makes you realise that, even when you watch on tv, the atmosphere/fans are so important to your enjoyment and involvement in a game - we won 6-2 against Leeds at OT and it was silent.

The ESL drama was genuinely the highlight from an entertainment perspective of the whole season.

Completely wrong. No one’s gonna forget the season without audiences in a lifetime.

The English League has never been better. The top teams dominate Europe, and even the lower mid table teams give them a hard time. Players are better all through the league, many of the best coaches go to the PL. To me, the League has been strong and tight. Some teams were clearly impacted more than others by last seasons protraction (United, City most).

Asyon Villa, Everton, West Ham have delivered good seasons worth remembering for their fans. United has delivered a very good season. Man City and Chelsea meet in the Champions League final. Many have reason to remember this season.

Of course it isn't.....but would you prefer to watch news report after news report about it rather than having a football match for 2-3 hours to take your mind off things? We had enough of that between March-July 2020.

Forgive me if you think I'm a bad person but for weeks now I've forgot to look at the deaths, covid cases, daily jabs for 1st and second doses at weekends as well there's so much football to follow.

That said I agree this season has felt like one big slog without fans. It was fun at the start with the random results and mad scorelines in first 6-8 games but it's generally settled down since then with players getting more up to speed in fitness.

Yeah that's definitely something I've been looking forward to.

On the other hand, we only got to experience a Lampard led Chelsea for 6 months before the fans were locked out of the stadiums.

It’s a season to forget. Looking forward to it ending.

Regaining fitness of players after a gruelling season.

Seeing which players we are in for and then either not signing them or signing them on September 1st

Hearing what Joel has to say.

The off-season is where it is all happening

By far the most interesting thing that happened this season was the Super League.

I think the fan fake noise has helped to be honest but not seeing them in the crowd hasn’t been great.

I do hope we can keep up these performances with fans in all honesty. We’ve played our most consistent period from last May without the fans.

It will be interesting, we certainly can’t go behind in away games and think it will be this easy to come back and win the game with away fans.

Wow I've never heard anybody even try to make that case. Seems absolutely inconceivable that somebody could think this current PL is as good as its ever been

Yeah, to say PL is as strong as its been is completely absurd, but relatively to Spanish-Italian-German leagues indeed Premier League seems to be in a better spot

Ole winning a trophy, this time as manager is what keeps me going.

Shit season indeed, but at least Glazers exposed themselves as proper criminals and it became painfully obvious to everyone now, not only United supporters.

Yeah definitely. The PL is many levels below its peak while Spain and Italy are even further again

It started so unpredictable though. The Villa 7-2, our humiliation, city getting hammered by Leicester, Chelsea's instability, Everton, West Ham and Villa looking contenders for top 6.

There were a couple of weeks where it threatened to be interesting but even those were undermined by some of the most half hearted football we've witnessed

City winning the league on a cold, wet Tuesday night when they didn't even play a game, was the perfect end. Only about three fans could even be bothered to travel to the Etihad to celebrate.

Football hasn't been the same since COVID struck. It does all feel a bit like a non-event - one massive, boring preseason friendly.

Agreed. Football has been rubbish since COVID. I rarely watch anything outside of United games nowadays.

Inconceivable to you?

The Premier League has never been further ahead in The UEFA League rankings. This season the PL gets an even higher rating than two years ago when both finals were all English, because the breadth is so good.

Number 9 in the PL was one goal away frim the Europa League final. What does that tell you? European teams are dominant than ever in the World Cup. The PL is the worlds best league by far at the present moment.

The reason is fairly obvious. Money. The best coaches and the best players go to the PL these days, which is why the quality is higher than ever.

if you mean ‘exciting’ and not ‘good’, that’s of course more subjective.

Im not arguing that it isn't the strongest league. You gave the impression in your first post that it was stronger than its ever been itself, which is laughable. Not sure why arsenal's semi final loss is relevant to your point seeing as the team that beat them and faces us in the final is 7th in la liga. Its a cup competition
