How do land-locked cities host the Olympics when there's sailing to be done?
In some cases there is a remote site in a different city, like Savannah for Atlanta 1996. In some cases like Beijing 2008, you even have events like Equestrian that where in Hong Kong for veterinary reasons

Why they didn't wear helmets or some pads I couldn't really figure out.
If you're a competent street skater you more than likely won't wear helmets and pads elsewhere in your career. Head injuries are very rare as these guys all know how to fall properly and they're arguably more likely to injure themselves if they are encumbered with safety gear.

That's them though; if it was me I'd insist on full-body bubble wrap as I'd have no idea what I was doing! The pros' minds and bodies are attuned to flying through the air and landing their feet on a plank of wood in ways I just cannot comprehend.

So whats the best channel to be watching this on? BBC or Eurosport? (Or RTE?)
Only realised today that the "live coverage" on BBC is actually delayed, DiscoveryPlus own the TV rights so Eurosport have a load of live feeds on the red button.

I'm rather enjoying the skateboarding, though like mentioned I'm surprised they don't have at least a helmet on and then some knee/elbow pads as they come off a lot and they're on concrete

How come there isn't a half pipe on the park course? I thought they were quite famous obstacles for skateboarding?

I thought there was surfing on today, can't seem to find it?

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"
The dutchie van Vleuten got silver but thought she’d won. A total breakdown of Dutch race communications. I was wondering why she was so happy with silver. Poor woman.
Yeah, it's in the write up/video in that BBC link.

When they caught two of the original three breakaways, they obviously thought that was all of them (and they might not have seen how many broke away right at the start when bunched) but as you say, surely their team cars say "there's one more"? In a world of tech, an amazing mistake to make.

There are no team radio comms in the Olympics...the Dutch team just got caught out like the rest of the countries with multiple riders.

It's been a nightmare trying to navigate the schedule and find what I want to watch.
Downloaded an app now and hopefully it will help, but been just flicking through things to find what I want. Watched all of the skateboarding this morning, and some of the soccer and hockey.
Plan to watch the triathlon later tonight.

It is, they'd actually separated the "skateboarding" clip separately, however it was only the finals, not the qualifiers which I wouldn't have minded watching either

No idea where the surfing is!

I don't get why, with the technology available, they can't upload by sport. Eg have day 2 skateboarding and all the skateboarding action within this. Day 2 gymnastics and just gymnast etc.

They seem to cut away and swap channel mid way through, I've been watching the women's Road race on I player, and they switch between the main channel and the red button and as with the mens race yesterday, I lost a big chunk, including when the Austrian lady made her winning breakaway

Again, as above couldn't they just upload it as "Road race" with the action from the various channels combined.... the diving was OK, i came across it in some of the hours of uploaded footage, and you got to see the whole diving competition in that section which was a treat.

Is it tonight the triathlon is taking place?

If anyone finds the surfing on iplayer, please could you let me know where it is?

Yeah it's pretty terrible they way they do that. I'm using local cable TV here, DSTV, and using rivers for anything I can't find on there.
I did see the surfing a bit this morning, there was a South African competing but I was totally lost so changed it, but can't remember on what channel it was on. Think eurosport 1 or something. If I come across it again I will let you know.

Yeah it's starting in 3 hours time, 23:30 here in SA. Men's final.

World Record for the Aussie women's 4x100 freestyle swimming and 3rd gold medal in a row for them.
Great swim by them and they had no competition other than their previous world record. It was nice to see as for their ages this is likely to be last olympics for most of them.

Yeah, I noticed that. So weird they won’t allow radios and earpieces. I wonder why they don’t. I’ve seen in other events the coaches relaying info to their athletes on handwritten signs though. The dutchies should have had that at least as a backup plan.
That van vleuten lady has no luck.

Can't really start with cycling since you'd basically have a peloton at an individual race.

Yep me too. Just looked at the red button on eurosport and the tennis is a rerun of Barty losing and gymnastics is a repeat too.
Is it just the triathlon live now? That's going to last hours isn't it.

Plus it would probably be dangerous to do the swim after a run or cycle.

Nah it's not a true ironman or even 70.3, a lot shorter this time. Just 1.5k swimming, 40k cycling and 10k running. Not sure about the times (very hot) but cycling + running should take comfortably less than 1h30.

Lots of repeats yeah.
Most of the good stuff start like 4am in SA that I want to watch unfortunately. Think Djokovic plays that time later. About 4 hours from now.

It's about 2 hours for the whole event usually I believe.

Hmm, still quite long. Is it a heat or the final? I guess it's not an event you can have loads of heats in or they'd all be fecked.

Haha no that'd be a bit too much :D It's a one-off, so basically the final yeah.

The time difference is going to screw this olympics- 4am too much with work the next day.

Wonder which event at the olympics is the most expensive if you’re a parent and your kid is inspired by it. Must be modern pentathlon? Need access to all kinds of weird equipment, swimming pool, horses etc…
