It reminds me of some comical red cards united received last season.

Surely there has to be more context to this? Cos on the face of it that is absolutely ridiculous.

Just seen they got knocked out with 2 goals in the last 2 minutes too - If ever there was a case to have a game replayed, I'd say this would be it.

There is no important story.. It was a joke between the fans of the two teams. The Jordanians said we will eat you like our traditional dish, when they scored they celebrated with sitting down and eating. When iraq scored they did the same (i, e we will also eat you).. It is nothing more than innocent football banter, no political or social signals at all.

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"

I don’t normally approve of teams walking off if they disagree with a refs decision… it’s usually part and parcel of the game…

….. but I would this time.

I‘m not a tin foil hat wearer, but things like this make you wonder if all refs are clones and the cloning machine has a glitch so they all come out stupid.

Beautiful scenes after the Tajikistan - UAE game yesterday. God I love Tajikistan and how their people speak Persian language and celebrate all the old traditions and celebrations that are now banned in Iran.Truly a brother country. And their coach is an absolute character!

Our basic is the first priority that we must develop into individual. We can’t go to the World Cup with this level of basics.
Some players are poor in the first half.

Saudi will best Korea. They are too on form. They even beat Argentina in the world cup, prompting Cristiano to join the Saudi league.

South Korea beat the Saudis the last time the played (in September).

S. Korea last 10 games: 6 wins, 4 draws
Saudi last 10 games: 5 wins, 2 draws, 3 losses

South Korea go through on penalties. Mancini who I totally forgot was Saudi Arabia manager, walked down the tunnel way before the last kick was taken

This is the best Asian Cup I can remember since 2004 one in China (farcial refereeing 20 years ago apart).

So much drama, upsets, and last minute goals and comebacks.

If there are no crazy upsets tomorrow, this is the QF brackets we're looking at:

Jordan - Tajikistan
Australia - Korea

Qatar - Uzbekistan
Iran -Japan

Korea's keeper (wacky mullet and all) has fantastic technique and timing on pens. Sprang off his line miles to close down the angle, while barely keeping a stud on the line to prevent any re-takes.

I really hope that Zion Suzuki has been removed from our scouts' radar now. 3 games, 3 big mistakes directly leading to a goal. It's not like he has had much to do either. Surely the highest mistakes per involvement ratio I've seen from a professional goalkeeper.
I can't believe it... 4 games, 4 mistakes. This one was 50% down to the defender, but Zion still had two chances to catch the ball there. His hands must be made out of jello. He also seems to insist on punching the ball when there's plenty of time to catch it.

I wonder how he's doing in Belgium because he's very shaky at this tournament

Jesus Christ, Japan are so wasteful. They lead 3-1, but they could have scored 10. So many 2 on 1 situations and even alone vs the goalkeeper.

Have always lacked a decent striker. Generations of wonderful AMs and wingers but never a forward. I do wonder how Furuhashi would have fared in this tournament? Mosdt teams in in the Asian Cup are probably Scottish leauge standards.

Second half of extra time between Syria and Iran kicking off. Iran with 10 men since the 90th minute.

Bro that was crazy - we should have buried them with so many wasted chances. Super lucky to go through. Big blow losing Tarami. Not sure what the rules are around him appearing again should we somehow get passed Japan. Anyways, congrats!

Iran through after 5 more or less perfect penalties.
If only their finishing was up to the task in the remaining parts of the game.

Japan should be the clear favorites but their keeper is quite suspect so who knows.

Iran's best striker is suspended so maybe that evens things out. But Zion has made blunders against 4 weaker teams than Iran, so I wouldn't bet on it.

Japan has the benefit of being more fresh and not having any major injuries or suspensions, I wouldn't be surprised to see them coast again iran but you never know really, should be an interesting game to watch.
Both this and afcon have been quite fun this year.

well done to Team Meli- amazing performance. We completely outplayed Japan in the 2nd half. Over the years, best overall performance that I have watched. We were also missing our main front player too!

Iran through with an injury time penalty. Seems they deserved it. Very unlucky to see that beautiful finish by Azmoun ruled out for a marginal offside.

One remaining fixture in this round. Qatar vs Uzbekistan

This is of course wrong since they projected Australia to go through.

Deserved win for Iran. They worked so hard from start to finish and created more chances.

I reckon we will see South Korea and Iran in the final.

Good bye Japan

The physical attributes of Iran’s players make Japan in big troubles. Their compactness, and mid-block are also the right plan/decision to play against Japan.

Pretty fun game, quality of the football has certainly increased since the last tournament, great to see.

So now I get why Suzuki was high on Ten Hags wishlist. He is just a worse and younger version of Onana.

Thought exactly the same haha.

Given Iran’s CBs and star player were missing, the performance was really impressive and they deserved to win. Criminal not starting Mitoma for Japan.

I'm genuinely enjoying this tournament. The quality of football has been very good but there is still a vast difference in the quality between the tier 1 countries (SK, Japan, Iran, Australia) and the rest. Even Saudi Arabia have been mediocre.
I hope the rest catch up but some simply don't have the infrastructure or population size to do so.
