I watched a video of all his goals and assists for United earlier today and you could forget how bloody good a player he was.

Who knows? If he's really good for us in the two games he might even get the call to see out United's season.

I couldn't possibly be more disillusioned and apathetic towards the national team, and unfortunately I don't think O'Shea taking the job is enough to change that.

Best of luck to him though.

Another of Sir Alex’s players steps into the managerial spotlight. An interesting choice I feel.
I Didn’t actually know he had gone into coaching, what do we think he will bring to the BIG? What are his chances for a permanent gig?
His chances for a permanent gig are pretty decent since we can't offer a big salary and it's not an attractive job.

The alternatives for a permanent head coach have been Lee Carsley, the Eng u-21 coach, (who they can't afford apparently), a long list of club managers from 20 years ago (e.g. Chris Coleman, Chris Hughton, Neil Lennon), coaches who haven't actually been head coaches (e.g. Paul Clement - I don't know him either) or Roy Keane.

If O'Shea wins one of the games, I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting him to be appointed just to put us out of our misery. A better question is should O'Shea even take it? I think it's a poisoned chalice.

Edit: O'Shea is now joint favourite for the permanent job with Carsley.

It's almost impossible not to improve on the Kenny era, so it's impossible to fail really.

Hughton might be a good shout, just parted ways with Ghana after AFCON so recent international experience and he always seems to have done a decent job with smaller teams.
The Keano rollercoaster would be a fun ride too.
Why do you say it’s a poisoned chalice? Surely expectations are fairly reasonable/low for a smaller nation like Ireland?

Don't you know we should be beating everyone we play?

He’ll probably also be the kit man, chef and the one putting the cones out.

Clement has managed a good few teams.

I don't think we'll get much better. I don't even think Kenny was doing that badly. The squad is just useless.

If only. There's a load of ex-players who seem to think we would qualify for every tournament if we just played like Big Sam's Bolton (even though they barely qualified for anything) and half of all post-match discussions of Ireland games become arguments over whether the manager should be sacked (it's been like that for decades). Most post-match interviews seem like interrogations.

The fact that our FA is bankrupt, corrupt and incompetent is never factored in.

I actually agree about Hughton. His time at Ghana was a disaster but I don't see why that means we should ignore him.

Clement has managed a good few teams.
True actually. I forgot about that. Have any of those stints as manager lasted long though? I thought he was mostly just an assistant.

No. He was a disaster every time if I remember correctly

Yeah I first heard him mentioned on a football podcast. They pointed out that the years he worked as a head coach were all single years meaning he didn't last the full season.

No he hasn’t.
He was at Derby, Reading, Swansea and Cercle Brugge.
He was an assistant to Ancelotti at Madrid and Chelsea. He gets no praise for that because we know Carlo is a management genius.
4 teams, that’s a good few. I didn’t say he was good there. But I was correcting the other lad saying Clement hadn’t managed any teams.

Good luck to him, Irish football is not in a great state

I had a brief chat with him tomangoes couple of decades ago and he was there to witness my superb dancing. I’m sure he approved and i approve this appointment.

And I saw Keith Andrews in tamangoes once. I hope he's on the new management team too?
