Mark Clattenburg: Ex-Premier League official's referee analyst role at Nottingham Forest explained
Nottingham Forest have appointed Mark Clattenburg as a referee analyst; the 48-year-old will be available for advice should Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo want to consult him on specific issues

Does this stink to anyone else?

Firstly, PGMOL will explain any decision a referee takes if you ask them so you don’t need to have an ex-referee on your payroll. Secondly, what the feck is the head of PGMOL doing attending a match as the guest of someone in this position? It’s just really really bad optics all round.

Because they are all mates looking after each other, hence the continued problems with VAR.

Yeah it’s dodgy as feck and I’m surprised the PL allows it.

I was more surprised that Fernandes didn’t go down. Obvious a red wasn’t going to be given when it’s against United. When was the last time anyone was sent off against United? Can do what you want

This really makes the mind boggle.
On R5 Live earlier Nuno was asked about the controversy in Forests game, refused to comment (understandably) but Clattenburg just happened to be there too (in the tunnel) and was happy not only to speak to the radio but to explain the whole incident like he was a pundit.
So no fine or ban for Nuno, because he has a house trained former referee as his pet. I’m not sure how it’s allowed.

Interesting idea to employ someone to come out and criticise the ref on the clubs behalf.

You would imagine the uproar would be a lot higher if it was one of the bigger clubs doing it.

What benefit are Forest hoping to gain from employing him anyway? I assume it's just a way of trying to pressure/influence referees. Obviously shouldn't be allowed.

Clubs should be banned from hiring former referees in any capacity.

Every other PL club should really just be cursing the fact that they didn't think of doing it first. Refereeing is crap and clubs have to argue their case or they get taken advantage of.

Managers can't do it and players can't do it, because they've got more important things to do than pretend to understand whatever mess PGMOL are putting out. That, and they just get bans and fines at the whim of the very people they're arguing against.

Ratcliffe will hire Collina any day now. Only best in class for us under him. With the Glazers we'd be hiring Ovrebo.

I fully agree that refereeing is poor. VAR has antagonized everyone further due to it being implemented inconsistently throughout the board. I just think the appointment of Clattenberg is a bit pathetic and not to be lauded. Also, there's nothing stopping the FA from banning him or fining him/the club for his continual comments.

The idea from Forest's perspective will be that he knows how and when to criticise referees without risking reprimand.

Also, their complaint is BS. Decision was correct and it happened the other way around earlier in the game.

Quite pathetic from Forest and sets a dangerous precedent.

Clubs need to do their talking on the pitch and stop moaning.

Yep.

Which makes it piss funny.
It also makes it bizarre that people just brush off claims that others are doing it as well
Absolutely. I’ve seen a few posters comment on how we’re moving towards WWE realms of decision making which I have to say isn’t that far fetched.

Mark Clattenburg was also head of refereeing organization in Greece, where he made incredible shit and favored Olympiakos. He was accused back then of being on Olympiakos payroll, which he denied, but now he got hired by Nottingham Forest. With Marinakis owning both clubs, it just shows Clattenburg has no integrity. I am also surprised English media hasn't called him out on this.

Wait, is this legit? This is hilarious if so

As for your last sentence, not particularly surprising. A mix of laziness, incompetence and dubious interests mean the media coverage won't usually pick up on stories that require some investigation.

Clattenberg has and always will look after himself first and foremost. Thats not to say he's entirely wrong here though, that third penalty not given was a disgusting decision, but it's not necessarily corruption just an agenda to push.

He also got himself into huge debt after a failed business venture, WHILE refereeing in the Prem. You don't need to infer anything but like - it's not a good look. Not necessarily his fault, again.

Didn't Barca pull a similar thing? Hire an ex-referee with dubious networks and links as an "consultant" and claimed there was nothing to see here?

I think that was a referee that was actually working as a referee at the time which made it even more of a scandal

If you're talking about the Negreira case, he was VP of the technical committee of refs while he was on Barça's payroll, for over 2 decades. The summary of the case, payments, etc. is on this page (but it's in Spanish). Much bigger scandal than Forest hiring Clattenberg.

"It has also led to the unmerited targeting of me, personally, by certain participants and pundits," he said.

What were you expecting the public reaction to be towards you, Mark? Bellend.
