Alot of what he spends will probably have to be raised himself...so I doubt itll be that much. Depends who SAF sees as worth selling, to bring in the £££.

I think you're underestimating the PLC..... They have showed they can spend big when needed, and frankly we DO need some new defenders.....

I'm not underestimating the PLC, but I also know that we can't keep spending like we did last summer every summer. Football in general is heading towards uncertain times in terms of cash revenues, and we'll have to be cautious. Not overly so, just sensible.

We do need at least a couple of defenders, but we don't necessarily have to shelf out £20m for oneof these.

As I've said in another thread - I rather we buy someone like Purse for £5m than the likes of Cannavaro for £15m.

Bramble is supposed to be up for sale during the summer - he'd probably be a bargain - but we already have two good young defenders. I do think we need to spend a lot on defenders - but you can only buy what is available and at the moment it looks like very slim pickings. Also I think it was Kenyon who recently said that we won't be spending like we did last summer, and we may have to sell to buy. I would not be surprised by the odd ruthless selling of a player like he did with Stam or Ince etc. The only one's who look like being candidates for that type of sale are the Neville brothers. And maybe one or other of Scholes and Veron - but that seems highly unlikely to me.

I havent't really seen enough of either Purse, Bramble and Riggott for that matter to comment on them, but I would love it, absolutely love it ;) if Fergie comes up with a Hyypiä kinda player, unknown, cheap and awesome.

That being said, I wouldn't exactly kill myself if we got Thuram and Ayala for £30..... Now that would've been a fantastic pairing.....

How much DID we spend last summer??

Not that much if you think about it!

The Ruud money was a year before's. We spent 28 on Seba and about 3 mil on Carroll. We sold Andy for 7.5 million and bought Forlan for 7. We sold Stam for 16.5 mil. We sold Greening/Wilson for 3 mil.

So, all in all, we've spent about 10 million pounds last summer...

1. I think Bramble is a very good prospect, but he's not the right man to get in. Seeing as we already have two very promising CB's, we need a more experienced player. I prefer a CB that's already in the English game. This would give us a pool of 4-5 CB's - assuming we're keeping Johnsen; Brown, Johnsen, O'Shea, AN Other and Gary Neville.

2. I think we should buy another RB. Not because I don't think Gary is good enough, but it will put some pressure on him, and also give us an option to play Gary in the middle if needed. We'll lose Irwin, so we can't rely on Phil always being available to step in for Gary, in case Silvestre is out as well.

3. Kenyon did say that we won't be spending as much as last season, which IMO is not necessarily a bad thing, as I'm concerned about the spiralling of wages and transfer fees, I do think football will have to wake up to a new financial reality sooner rather than later.

4. I don't think the Nevilles will go. Gary is a regular and both are valuable due to versatility. Only if Phil decides that he wants to pursue a regular place elsewhere do I think he will leave.

5. Scholes won't be sold, and I think Sir Alex will keep Seba to prove that it wasn't a mistake to buy him. Only if Seba himself expresses a wish to move will he be sold IMO.

6. I wouldn't be surprised if Sir Alex replaced Barthez though.

7. I think we will be buying a striker, as I can't see Yorke being around come pre-season training. I'd love us to buy Gudjohnson from Chelsea, even if it costs us £20m.

True

Which in my opinion is sensible both in football and financial terms.

Like whom? Not Purse because he can hardly be called experienced, not in the PL that is.

What I ment was more experienced than the likes of Brown, Bramble and Riggot. Purse do come across very confident, a confidence that you only get from a few years in the game, and a confidence that the Brambles and Browns are still lacking.

But you're right, he might not be the right one, as I haven't seen much of him. But that's why I think it's good that Brucie is his manager now, because if he doesn't think he's up to it, he'll let Sir Alex know.

It's hard to say who's the better; Finnan or Neville. But, Finnan is younger and would come relatively cheap.

I don't really see the point of using money bringing in a player who's not better than what we've already got..... You would probably say squadbuilding etc but I think it would be better to splash out the extra dough to make GARY NEVILLE the "reserve right back"....... if you know what I mean....

Bottom line; if Finnan isn't better than Gary Neville as right back then we better stay away..... And Finnan's only ONE year younger.....

That's fair enough. I thought Finnan was only 21-22. If that's the case then I agree with you.

Don't buy Finnan ;)

The PLC have budgeted for the QF of the CL so if we go beyond the QF Fergie will have possibly an extra 10m to spend on top of what he already has.
Although he spent big last summer, again RVN has already budgeted for.
Basically he will get who he wants.

The way things are going with tv cash, it would be stupid to shell out big time on players who are no better than what we have.

Wages and transfers are going to be on a downward spiral, because if the Nationwide has 20 clubs going bust, where do those players go?

Maybe not United, but it means there is more for the bigger clubs to cherry pick from at more realistic prices, meaning the ones United ARE interested in can be sold at a price relevant to the market.

I don't think SAF will be spending massively this summer, the sensible thing for ANY club to do is bring the nucleus of a team through the ranks and add more experienced players at the right time, at the right price. He has done it before and he will keep on doing it, it's the way to go, but he has a head start on a lot of people.

I reckon he'll spend no more than 10 million.....
no idea who on though. Some will definitely be out to make way and keep wages at an affordable level.

Agree about Gudjohnsen...
A pool of RVN,Gudjohnsen,OGS and Forlan would be very strong.
Let's hope Chelsea don't make that final CL slot.
