#9 The Priority For Jose

Reports today say that Jose wants a #9 more than he wants Griezmann and thus that will be our priority this summer. Now some reckon it's a sudden switch due to the transfer ban being upheld for Atleti, but Di Marzio said prior to that, that Jose didn't have Griezmann as his main target.

I know the general consensus is we have a bottomless pit but unlike City and PSG we do still try to run the club like a business, we don't have any clever schemes where our multi billionaire owners sponsor things for ludicorus money to justify expenditure. So with the price Griezmann costs and the price we need to pay for a top #9 might make things impossible to pull off in one window.

I know Lukaku's name will jump forth and he has his fan club here, but we wont do any better than we did last season with him IMO, his hold up play is crap and he's not good enough to cater the attack to. I think we need a striker that can hold the ball up like Jose demands and operate as a true fulcrum that will help get the best out of our other attackers, as if we are only bringing in one goal source we are simply in the same position as last season, which means to me this striker needs to be a team striker that will get more out of the likes of Martial, Rashford and Mkhitaryan, a more selfless striker than Ibra and Lukaku, someone in the mold of Benzema.

Think I'd prefer Morata out of him, Belotti & Lukaku who are the 3 we seemed to have been linked to most. Seems more likely to end up at AC though.

None of those three are better than Zlatan, so not really arsed which one it is.

The only way this is possible is if Fabinho has agreed to join which kind of forces us to play 3 in the middle.
Fabinho and Lukaku would help us more than Griezmann and a lesser midfielder imo.

Doesn't really make any sense. Our attack is shit, we need more than a #9

Why would Griezmann mean we have to sign a lesser midfielder? Lukaku will cost just as much as Griezmann.

Keep Zlatan and get Griezmann and a 9. It'd be our most stocked attack since 08/09.

As disappointing as it is for my flaccid muppet dick, I think it makes sense.

Of course we do but not everything can be done in one window if we are trying to operate with a degree of sense.

Not better individually but it's possible to get a better team striker who will enhance the games of our other attackers.

With 3 in midfield we have no room for a 10 or ss.
We're not spending 80m on Griezmann to play him wide, even then we would still have to spend big money on a striker anyway

I'd rather we got Bellotti or Morata ahead of Lukaku. Lukaku's hold up play along with his passing leave much to be desired. He's also very weak in the air.

Should have signed a long term option last year rather than a pensioner. Wasn't a fan of short term thinking last year, I certainly am not happy now that it has cost us a world class signing

We were supposedly still mad after him a few weeks ago. Zlatan has been injured a while...

To be fair Raiola has been doing the rounds re drumming up interest in his players etc. this past week or so, so it could be more a case of we/they don't plan to renew and it's only just been decided.

As i mentioned in the Griezmann thread, something doesn't add up.

So Di Marzio said it was Mbappe, Morata, Griezmann. BBC is saying we cooled on Griezmann

1. There is no significant and credible movement on Mbappe, best rumours say he might stay.

2. Morata is an AC Milan target

3. Griezmann now not a priority because we need a CF.

WTF? :lol::wenger::lol::wenger:

Unless we are willing to break the bank for either Lewandowski or Kane then whoever we get won't be a big upgrade on what we currently have.

Out of the three being linked I'd rather Lukaku, at least he is proven in this league.

Same here. Not that I've watched Morata and Bellotti extensively, but Morata seems to be far ahead technically.

The names aren't great, really.

Lukaku has a very impressive goalscoring record and is very young but is fairly patchy, with most of his goals coming in decided games, and the technical aspect of his game is quite lacking. Belotti has similar issues, but I suppose his style of frantic press from the front, and equally aggressive monstrous heading could be more beneficial. Still, the question is up in the air as to whether he could acclimatise quickly in England.

I'd probably go for Morata - he's already played for 2 of the biggest sides around, and whilst his goal tally isn't amazing, his goal contribution to minutes is very good. Plus, his all-round game is far more developed to the others.

I think we're feeding the press nonsense or they were making it up in the first place.

No way Mourinho was planning to go into next season relying on a 36 year old #9. A top #9 had always been a big priority, Zlatan's injury doesn't change that. He was also injured about two months ago and the press have been insisting Griezmann was priority one that whole time.

Seems a bit strange. We've known about Zlatan's injury for weeks and even before it there was a possibility he wouldn't stay. I don't see why the fact that we've decided we need a striker means that we don't need a no 10/winger - our other options there haven't suddenly got better.

Of course we do but not everything can be done in one window if we are trying to operate with a degree of sense.
If we wanted to operate with a degree of sense we'd overhaul our shite attack so we might actually have a chance of challenging for the title.

The timing of the Atletico announcement and United briefing multiple hacks that we've pulled out of the Griezmann deal, is surely more than coincidental. Anyway, it matters not, we need a new #9 either way and my preference would probably be Morata.

With the Griezmann deal dead, I think we will need to find another goal-scoring wide player, though.

Morata would be good, but dealing with Real i imagine they would like to slide in De Gea somewhere in the deal. Lukaku is good, but could be very expensive. I say Belotti, who wont be cheap, but gets me more exciting than Lukaku

If we wanted a striker, why didn't we go for Auba?

I hope we don't end up with Lukaku for a ridiculous fee.

Why are we not considering Aubameyang? The guy scored 40 goals in his last 2 seasons and it looks like he will cost around 60M.

I don't really have a preference out of the strikers we have been linked with.

However I think Mourinho will want Lukaku.

Its all a smokescreen for lewandoski, you heard it here first.

we should break the bank for him. Transfers that actually make sense are usually never done by us so it wont happen.

Yes. Explains all the Perisic talk from Italy. However he will be 2nd or 3rd choice. With the likes of Bale and Sanchez on the market this summer we should get someone good :)

I think a striker and a right winger is of more priority that a striker and a no. 10.

Lukaku for £100m....less talented than Zlatan and we can't majorly update the attack from this year. Doesn't sound tempting to me.

Because he's not a big muscley boy. Jose likes his muscley boys.
I wouldn't say it's because he isn't muscly, it's more the fact that his game is to run in behind rather than hold-up in front of the defence. He's 6'2 and looks as equally built as someone like Lewandowski, for instance.
