Di Marzio said Mourinho has his eyes on Golovin. Is he tall enough, old enough? Has presence at all?

I mentioned him in March in one of the Pogba threads.

He seemed to be very highly rated a year or two ago, but I’ve not heard that much since then.

He also plays left side in a 4-4-2 a lot, as far as I can see, so not sure exactly where he’d fit with us. Maybe long term Matic replacement?

Scouting Report
So the recent rumours suggest that Jose wants to bring in a young midfielder along with Fred.
Latest quote from Di Marzio: “Mourinho's eyes were also turned towards two players of the Russian national team: Aleksandr Golovin of CSKA Moscow and Fëdor Smolov, Krasnodar striker.”

21 year old Russian central midfielder (turns 22 today actually, happy birthday) who plays for CSKA Moscow. Very highly rated with pace, great dribbling ability and ball control. Performance v Arsenal in the Europa League where he scored a great freekick:

This fits the bill of that reddit rumor about a young RB and a young CM.

I’m for it if it means we are also getting Griezmann.

There were some stories of us signing a younger midfielder as a replacement for Fellaini along with Fred.

Golovin is 22 and would be cheap-ish all things considered, so it could make sense to be fair.

Seems pretty highly rated. Was linked with Arsenal last summer if I'm not mistaken.

We already have Pereira. Unless he leaves, I don't see the point.

Don't know why but I've heard his name before. This is promising. We should buy him.

Seriously though, is he the calibre of player we should be after? Anybody on here who watches the Russian league care to elaborate on him?

He was very good against us in Moscow. Russia’s best player.

How many times are we going to hear this, this summer? Along with TFM at RB.

If we are bringing in players in their positions then they just aren’t rated.

Would make a lot of sense for us. Fred the main midfield signing, the 2nd midfielder was always going to be a younger option who can have an impact now but also push players and develop into a starter himself. Getting Fred and then SMS or someone like that means we'd effectively pay 150m between 2 mids, and one would be a squad player and the other giving us more balance rather then being a game changer.

Now to watch vids.... I've seen him before but never focused on him or anything so cant say much obviously.

He’s definitely off.
Not sure about that. He had an interview saying he wants to make it here (after being approached by Valencia). Unless he wants out, we don't really have a reason to sell. It's not like we're stocked up in midfield.

Makes a few tackles, decent passer and likes to dribble. Might be a bit lightweight. If we're interested he would seem to be a squad option to compete with Pogba

Maybe he has a clause in his contract with Russian station about bringing Russian player in his current club.

I'm a simple man, I see a talented 21/22 year old and I want us to buy him.
In all seriousness we need a bit of squad depth in the midfield along with Fred so this would be a good signing.
If we get them two and that Dalot then I'll be very happy.

Our transfer targets are uninspiring to say the least.
They make a lot of sense actually, was never gonna be 5-6 top players all ready to start.

  1. Younger player to fight and eventually take over from Valencia at right back. - Dalot (20m)
  2. One starter mid who is an all round playe - Fred (50m)
  3. 1 younger squad option midfielder with potential (we lack depth unless we bring in 2 mids anyway) - Golovin (20-25m?)
  4. Starting LB (sandro/other options) (50m?)
  5. Starting CB (alderweireld) (45m)
  6. Star attacker (bale) (100m)
Even left back I could see being the Tierney route instead of Alex Sandro. Alderweireld isnt as necessary as the others but a lot of noise for that. Even if we dont get Bale, we'll still be spending around 200m with the 5 signings. Squad would be lacking on the right though.

What about that young Italian chap from Cagliari, Barella? Wasnt he someone we wanted a few months ago. I would rather him than let him go to Juve on a cheap to turn out a very good midfielder

I see him more of a 10 than a proper CM though. He could possibly be developed into a Modric-like CM though, who also used to be a 10.

Also, at least statistically according to whoscored, both Golovin and Smolov who Mourinho might have been looking at tonight were both in the Russian Premier League team of the season, as was Paredes who there was a link to a few weeks ago
