Manchester United Accepts Invitation to Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVIII

DALLAS, Texas (Thursday, Jan. 26) – The Dr Pepper Dallas Cup, the oldest and most prestigious international youth soccer tournament in the United States, has announced that English Premier League powerhouse Manchester United will compete in the elite tournament’s 2017 Gordon Jago Super Group. Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVIII will mark the fourth time for the Red Devils to compete in the Gordon Jago Super Group, and the club’s eighth Dallas Cup appearance overall. They look to become the second consecutive Premier League club to claim the Gordon Jago Super Group title, and the third English club in the last five years to win the esteemed bracket.

Manchester United looks to improve upon the last time they competed in the elite bracket back in 2013, a team that featured current Belgian international Adnan Januzaj. In 2012, the club reached the championship match, but lost to Brazil’s Coritiba, who will also be competing this April. The 2012 squad featured current Manchester United first team player, Jesse Lingard.

In a recent ranking of Premier League academies by Britain’s Daily Mirror, Manchester United sits firmly on top. The club ranks first in Premier League minutes played by academy players. They also rank first in total players currently playing in the Premier League who were produced by the academy. The Manchester United academy has produced 29 players who currently play in the Premier League, which not only tops England’s top flight, but also makes United’s academy one of the most successful in world soccer.

Manchester United joins a strong Gordon Jago Super Group, which amongst others, includes 2016’s champions Everton, Brazilian powers Coritiba and Fluminense, prominent Israeli club Maccabi Haifa, and 2016 US Soccer Development Academy champions FC Dallas. Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVIII will be held from April 9 through April 16, 2017.

MANCHESTER UNITED ENTER 2017 DALLAS CUP

Manchester United have confirmed entry in this year's Dallas Cup, the oldest and most prestigious international youth tournament in the United States.

The Reds took a team to the tournament in 2012 and 2013, during Warren Joyce's tenure as Reserves coach, and have participated some eight times in total over the years.

Interim boss Nicky Butt is set to oversee the trip between 9 and 16 April with his side competing in the Gordon Jago Super Group, alongside the likes of 2016 champions Everton, Coritiba, Fluminense, Maccabi Haifa and FC Dallas.

United reached the final in 2012, with Michael Keane, now at Burnley, scoring the goal in a bad-tempered 2-1 defeat to Coritiba, which saw the team reduced to nine men. A year later, Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson were part of a younger squad which travelled to Texas.

"It's a big test going over there and playing South American teams," Butt told ManUtd.com. "It'll be an Under-19 team and they're travelling out of their environment, going to a new place. Some people have never been to Dallas before so it's an exciting time.

"It's a tournament I feel, and a lot of people at this club feel, is an important part of their development. It's very rare we play against South Americans in the Academy over in this country. So it's massive for us and good we've agreed to go now."

Dr Pepper Dallas Cup Pre-Tournament News and Notes

Game notes for Opening Day Super Group games at the Cotton Bowl

Everton FC (England) vs FC Dallas (USA) at 12:30pm:

Of note: Everton, the defending Super Group champion, looks to become the fifth club to win the Gordon Jago Super Group in consecutive years and the first since 2004-2005. FC Dallas is the current U-18 U.S. Development Academy national champions and in a recent ranking of MLS academies by Top Drawer Soccer, FC Dallas took the top spot.

Keep an eye on:

· Delial Brewster (Everton): Strong and pacey forward with a great eye for goal. Helped Everton clinch U-18 premier league title in 2014. Found the back of the net 5 times during the 2016 Dr Pepper Dallas Cup

· James Yates (Everton): The young full back has 5 caps for England youth sides. Yates has had impressive years for club and country, helping win league titles and aiding England’s U17 team that qualified for the U-17 World Cup.

· Paxton Pomykal (FC Dallas): Pomykal made hisMLS debut on March 17, 2017. He is a member of the U18 USMNT. The young, Texas native is a composed and creative player, who makes smart and timely passes.

· Jesus Ferreira (FC Dallas): Ferreira has 48 goals in 50 starts since joining FC Dallas Academy in 2013. Son of former FC Dallas David Ferreira

Tigres UANL (Mexico) vs. Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany) at 3:00pm:

Of note: Tigres and Eintracht Frankfurt were named co-champions of the Super Group in 2011 after inclement weather cut the match short. Tigres won the Super Group outright in 2003. Dallas Cup XXXVIII will mark the eleventh time for Eintracht Frankfurt to compete in the Gordon Jago Super Group, and the club’s 20th Dallas Cup appearance overall.

Keep an eye on:

· Hector Montalvo (Tigres): Montalvo was called up to the U19 U.S. Youth Soccer Team. He was part of the 2015 FC Dallas U.S. Soccer Development Academy Championship team.

· Arlex Hurtado Cortez (Tigres): The young prospect was called up to the Colombian U20 international team in the summer of 2016.

· Raffael Cvijetkovic (Eintracht Frankfurt): The German forward leads his team in goals scored and sits just outside the top 10 of the top goal scorers in A-Junioren Bundesliga.

· Lukas Rodwald (Eintracht Frankfurt): Rodwald is a creative midfielder who leads his team in assists.

Manchester United (England) vs. CD Guadalajara “Chivas” at 6:30pm:

Of note: Manchester United will make their fourth Gordon Jago Super Group appearance at Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVIII, still seeking their first championship. In 2012, they reached the final, but lost to Coritiba 2-1. Chivas has a rich history at Dallas Cup having won seven “Boot and Ball” championship trophies across all age groups since 1998, but they are still seeking their Super Group title.

Keep an eye on:

· Lee O’Connor (Manchester United): Republic of Ireland Under-16 captain. The 16-year-old is the youngest player in the Manchester United Dallas Cup team.

· Alejandro Zendejas (C.D. Guadalajara “Chivas”): USMNT U17 during the 2015 FIFA U17 World cup. FC Dallas’ 13th Homegrown player after joining the academy in 2012. Made his MLS debut on May 1st 2015 versus Houston Dynamo

Hmm, I had the time all messed up it seems. :wenger:

FT Chivas 4-1 Man Utd [Torres '11,' 17, Zendejas '46, Macias '52 - Kenyon '55]

United apparently looked tired (jetlag), crowd of 19'417, good experience for the lads.

The next match against Real Salt Lake tonight at 22:00 BST (but don't trust me on those times anymore)

Not sure what exactly was the cause for the performance, but our boys were far from even being close to the better side. Given the travel, warmer temperatures and facing a Mexican side with a style not regularly seen in Europe, it wasn't exactly a shocker that we struggled. I haven't see this side play much, but last night Gribbin looked to be the only one that could really create anything.

It was a tough day for the PL academy sides as Everton lost 5-0 to the local FC Dallas side.

On a positive note - the game was played in front of 15,000 spectators (very pro Chivas) and it was nice to see the US based United supporters groups out to cheer the youngsters.

Wonder if anyone from that Chivas side that beat us in the final 5 years ago is playing at a high level now.

Not seeing a Chivas side that won then, but we did lose in 2012 to Corritba. Can't find the squad, but the goalscorers on Wikipedia either don't have a page, or play for teams I've never heard of.
