The Sri Lankans accepted Lehmann's written and verbal apology and Clive Lloyd decided to let the matter rest at that. The chairman of the ICC, Malcolm Speed, overruled Lloyd and wanted to make an example of Lehmann's outburst,(rightfully so) and charged Llehmann with a racial vilification charge which carries a minimum punishmentt of a 4 game ban, he also suggested that it was a very serious breech leaving Lloyd with little choice but to give a longer ban than the minimum.
