Has not received a red card in any senior game so far despite his style. Bit similar to Wan-Bissaka. He'd offer our midfield something completely different.

The tackle at 1:35.

Yea, I referred to him as the midfield version of AWB in the transfer thread earlier too. I definitely share your opinion there. Very much a ‘do the dirty work’ player.

We simply have to sign this kind of player after Sancho but the lack of links is worrying

Not sure links matter that much tbh, a lot of media are demonstrably clueless. I’m also not sure it’s that simple. We haven’t necessarily got a very top DM - but we have a number of very good players capable of the role. If we added Luis, someone needs to go first I think. No point in Luis, Fred, Matic and perhaps McTominay if he’s seen for that role ro be battling for one spot. We also hope to add Bellingham to the mix.

I agree with you in principle though - a top player in this role with stamina and power is essential to compliment our other starting midfielders - however, I can’t see it happening.

Perhaps Bruno has dropped a recommendation - sure he would know him well and play directly against him in his position.

He has a 120 Euro release clause. Benfica rate him higher than Joao Felix.
There's absolutely not an iota of a chance we can afford him.

I think we have a great chance to sign Sancho and Bellingham who will be phenomenal. There won't be a penny left if we buy them so Ole may have to hit the loan market if he wants extra additions after those 2.

How good is he on the ball and passing wise? If he is very good in that regard, it would be great.

Pretty good on the ball, at least from what I've seen. Won't orchestrate the game from the deep with an expansive range of passing like a prototypical deep-lying playmaker (at least for now), but has a good understanding of space/positioning and keeps the ball moving along smoothly — basically, has all the tools to operate as a conduit-style #6 given his accuracy on the ball and expertise at protecting the defense like a spider (that function is be a good complement to playmakers like Pogba/Bruno further up the pitch).

At a crucial stage in his development so a lot can go wrong of course (hopefully it doesn't), but you could argue that in terms of pure potential he's among the best young defensive/holding midfielders in football after Rennes' Camavinga on the basis of performances over the last year, and will get even better (and more consistent) with regular playing time. Would be an astute acquisition, IMO, as he definitely has what it takes to be a long-term fixture in midfield with the likes of Mejbri.

To be honest, it's quite odd that Luís' playing time has been limited at Benfica in the months preceding the lockdown when he could have staked at claim in the EURO squad for Portugal, especially considering he formed a fairly robust axis alongside Taarabt and newly acquired Weigl is by no means an accomplished holder these days — there were even some reports linking him with Milan and Nice in the winter market. Perhaps someone with intimate knowledge of the background stuff at Benfica can enlighten us, does Lage not like him or is there more to the situation?

Claudia Garcia – a sports journalist for Rai Sport and Eleven Sports Portugal – has lifted the lid on the situation surrounding Florentino:

“In the recent period he played less than before due to a change of formation. Now the situation is different: Coronavirus has changed the market, he is very young and must have continuity. For this reason, Benfica could loan him out and Milan are among those interested, but it is not the only one. There are other teams.”

On a technical level many have described Florentino Luis as an excellent potential partner for Bennacer.

“Florentino is good, he remembers Makelele very much in the defensive phase: he is really strong on positioning, and is ready for the Italian league,” Garcia continued.

“He has an average of 90% of successful passes, which is a very high average. In Italy there is Bentancur with a similar average. He has an average of 3.2 tackles every ninety minutes: comparing him with the young Serie A midfielders, he has a higher average. Bennacer has 2.6.

“He has an average of 4.6 interceptions [per 90], another number higher than the boys of Serie A. It is true that he played less in this phase, but in all these things he is really strong. Then in the construction phase he is not very active, he is improving but he is a more defensive and positional player as his statistics tell us.”

Have to admit, seen zero minutes of this guy and have barely heard his name until very recently and wonder where he'd fit in...

Few yellow cards conceded too; about 1 yellow per 7 games - which is good for DCM. Good interceptions & tackling. Only 1 injury on his record: meniscus taking him out for just over 1 month last year.

I would think the plan is to sign a DM/DCM with a view for him to be eased in and eventually take over from Matic in the next couple of years, really haven't a clue who that is going to be though and gut feeling is it won't be this summer and will keep faith with Fred, McTominay and Matic.

Prefer over Declan Rice. Seems to have a higher ceiling due to technical ability.

Rice is destined to become a mediocre CB in a few years. We have enough of those.

If we're planning to play both Pogba and Bruno in the same formation then someone like Luis is a must

Yeah totally agree but looks like Utd have put a DM/DCM on the backburner and are going to stick with Matic, Fred & McTominay in that area

Matic legs are gone. Covid will hit these smallish clubs (financially wise) hard. Now it's time to buy on cheap

I've written long winded posts about this player in the last 12 months.

Would be a very good purchase.

I have to agree even though I'm not a fan. I'd rather someone more press resistant, who can pass and dictate games from deep, but you have to factor in team balance, and a CM of his ilk, like you say, would just bring a better balance.

Think it’s a year too soon for everyone — we have too many midfield numbers (mostly Matic for another year), and Florentino Luis appears to have only played 7 times in the league for Benfica this season.

I think it's more of a long term investment +exploiting the financial crisis Benfica might facing due to covid

Will be allowed to leave on loan with a option to buy according to Marcotti.

Makes it a even better deal potentially if true.

Why would they allow that? Seems really weird.

The clearest thing I've seen from United is that the double pivot 4231 is our main tactic and how Ole wants his team to be. Double Pivot in the sense that both Midfielders are defensive to a degree. Veira with Petit/Gilberto or Keane with Ince. Two box to box midfielders. My guess here is that if Pogba does end up leaving at the end of the season, signing Luis alongside Mctominay would be how Ole wants to set up, with a very attacking front 4.

Lots of clubs in Portugal have to sell this summer to stay afloat, think this news has come from them rather than anyone on our end. Like Gaitan all over again.

And there are two other senior alternatives. Matic making three. All competing for one spot.
Fred and McT are box to box players not DMs. In normal circumstances I'd say we shouldn't buy him out as there are other positions that need to be strengthened. However these are not normal circumstances. If we can get promising players on the cheap then I'd say let's do it.

When Ole spoke about taking advantage of the current situation (I know the context), it's the Portuguese and French and Dutch leagues we can really do it to. Telles for example, although I haven't watched him this year.

But I'm always wary of links with Benfica players. When we signing Garay?

So you pretty much expect Matic to automatically start with Fred and Pogba when football returns then? If after all, Fred and McTominay are not competing for the other role - it is Matic’s by default. Which I doubt is the case.

If we broufh in Luis, the route all 4 of them will see into the team is next to Bruno and Pogba - not ahead of them.

God knows how players act under pressure. For example no one thought that Pirlo and Scholes could make it in CM let alone becoming WC there. Yet when given a choice between CM and the bench they chose the former and the rest is history. So can Matic give us another year? Can McT or Fred become DM? Can Luis slot in DM immediately? God knows.

What I do know is that pressure at this level is healthy because top players tend to step up to it. That covid had brought clubs at their knees and that top young players like Luis might move for cheap. So if we believe in his talent then lets sign him now. In a buyer's market where there are few clubs who are able to spend big money and were clubs will be desperate to sell then we might not have another chance to do so.

Well if we are adamant about not being interested in Partey then does make me wonder if we have any intention of bringing in this kind of player at all this summer which is worrying to say the least
