Manchester United have taken the young Leicester City attacker Jeff Schlupp on trial with a view to signing him on a permanent deal.

Schlupp, 20, has been training at Carrington with the permission of his parent club, who have a close relationship with United and have taken players on loan from the Premier League club in the past. The young United defender Michael Keane has recently extended his loan at Leicester and forward Jesse Lingard, another young United player, has just returned from a loan spell there.

Schlupp is relatively inexperienced even in Championship football and has not played in the first team since November. He is a striker who can operate on the left and has also played some games at left-back for the club. He broke into the side last season having played on loan at Brentford in the 2010-2011 season.

A product of the Leicester academy, Schlupp made an immediate impact when he broke through into the first team at the start of last season and scored a hat-trick on his debut away to Rotherham United in the League Cup. He played fairly regularly last season in spite of injuries.

He is a senior Ghana international, his one cap coming in November last year. Previous to that he played junior international football for Germany – he was born in Hamburg before moving to England as a youngster. He underwent knee surgery last season but the club still gave him a new contract until 2015.

There have been a number of players developed at United who have gone to Leicester in recent seasons. The club currently have three in their first-team squad: the defender Ritchie De Laet and the midfielders Danny Drinkwater and Matty James.

Be a very weird move, don't think he's our level at all. Seen him a fair bit when he was on loan last season and apart from being absolutely rapid and all left foot he doesn't strike me as one who is full of potential.

If I was to throw out a lazy comparison he struck me as a less talented Sturridge, same levels of selfishness as well.

Has he recovered from the surgery or is he still rehabilitating?

Odd signing. We have some very good young forwards already, and certainly no room ahead of them what with our brilliant first team options there. Plus it's not like the kid is 17, he's 20 already.

The U21s is getting a bit overcrowded with these types of signings.

He's been converted at LB now. Plays there.

We do make some random (eventually pointless) signings.

Give the kid a chance... Must be talented.. scored a hattrick on his debut.
Injured a bit. Lets see how he does here.

You are very big on protecting this bubble of youth players we have in the academy by never signing players U21 or something. The fact is, the best ones make it, simple as.

I can appreciate the whole identity and tradition bit, but at times it seems some United fans are really afraid to improve. Take Persie for instance. Top quality striker at Arsenal, better than what we have. Yet many did not want him here as he would not allow our current inferior players to play. Now he's here of course, we are not campaigning for him to be benched for Welbeck or Hernandez, which by that logic - we should.

But there is this huge thing about not signing a player better than our current one, seeing as, obviously, it will then mean our current one isn't good enough to play! All of our players found there way here somehow, and the current ones probably replaced the ones who were not as good that were signed/blooded before them. The cycle will continue. Kieran Richardson partly left because of Nani. Bardsley because of Rafael. Do you have a problem with this?

If this kid we are trialling isn't better than the current, he won't make it. Bebe or Vesseli haven't walked into our first team for example.

If he's being signed as a young wide option/fullback who can provide cover in a couple of areas, and he has a bit of potential then I see no problem.

Never seen him play, or even heard of him, but a signing is a signing.

Just thought, if he joins he'll be the first German player to make an appearance for United (even if he's elected to play for Ghana), won't he?

Yeah, no potential for a youth with pace and a strong left foot in our side...

He'll be the first Ghanaian too, unless you include Welbeck. Which you shouldn't, because he's English.

There's also a German born Englishman (Sean Goss) in the U-16s and our reserve captain a few years back was German (Markus Neumayr), and Ron Robert Ziegler was at the club and is now a full German international.

I'm just saying he'd likely be the first to make an appearance for United.

I had him on FIFA 12 because I did a career with Leicester, and he was like, well, good for the bench.

Hope we sign him - simply so we can have some Beach Boys around Old Trafford:)

From Leicester came Schlupp Jeff B etc etc

A replacement for Fryers/Brady?
Never seen him play.. waiting for the U21s match now.

And no.. leicester can't have Keane.

I went on the foxes forum and am a bit confused by all this considering their reaction. Why do we need another LB?

Anyway on a side note, does anyone know where the hell Blackett has been?

I appreciate your point, and I'm sorry if I seem to have an agenda when I post about youth teams, but the fact is that it's not as simple as 'if they're good enough, they make it'. Anyone who watches the U18s and U21s regularly knows that. The factors going into who plays for the U21s are incredibly complicated, and about so much more than talent and promise.

I don't want to go on and on, but Bebe is a useful example. He was generally shit for the U21s, but much better players were kept on the bench, or even off the team sheet, whilst he started most matches. The fact is that you don't buy someone for £7mil and then leave him to rot, you play him.

What do you mean where is he? I thought he was injured?

Absolutely agree with you.

He was out injured for a while but he played in the 7 a side tournament a few weeks ago so will probably be involved in the next reserve match

Interesting.

Not sure why we'd want this guy AS WELL as Zaha (in the Summer potentially).

Fergie wants one last Reserves title before he leaves the club.
