...from 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw to just one point for each goal you score.

Wouldn't this make football games more exciting? What would improve and which would be the drawbacks?

I've always wondered this.

Edit - Or better yet, you keep the existing system in place but add a point per goal scored.

This would probebly make smaller teams not give up after conceding a few goals and maybe stop others from parking a bus.

Well the drawback would be the team who was the best at trashing the smaller teams would win the league.

A one nil win and a one all draw will get you the same points. Doesn't sound right.
Hmmm good point. Ok, I've decided you gain 2 points for a goal scored but lose one for every goal you conceed. Changing my letter to Blatter.

What's to hate, right?

i think at 80 minutes if the scores are level the 5th official (Buckooo TM) should release the snitch to determine the winner

Yeah maybe the spanish FA will give Real Madrid some extra points retrospectively for that 9-1, nice try

Whoever scores the most amount of goals against Sunderland would end up winning the league.

Wouldn't it be even more fun if players had some kind of incentive to practice long distance shooting more? How about 1,5 or 2 points for goals scored from outside the penalty box!

Good idea, I've added this to my concept.

How much for an overhead kick though? And goals from your own half?

While we're at it, I'd like to suggest...

5 minute sin bin for getting nutmegged.

One player from each team is designated as the enforcer and is allowed to fight/punch the other enforcer.

No goalkeepers allowed, only rush goalies.

You get lots of games towards the end of the season where teams have nothing to play for so in this scenario you could get higher scores and more points than if you play them earlier in the season in a more meaningful game. And obviously it would just increase the gap between the richest sides who could afford the best players. Athletico won La Liga scoring far fewer goals than Real or Barca but they fully deserved the title.

How about you get a point for every yard away from the goal you score from. Charlie Adam becomes the worlds most expensive footballer and Stoke win the league.

I hope David Gill is reading that thread before running in FIFA presidential election.

Has anyone suggested multi-ball yet or is that too Noughties?

Goals scored = 1pt
Goals conceded = -1pt

That way a draw always =0 pts

Could actually be brilliant

Knew before I opened the thread a Real Madrid fan wrote this.

Didn't Wenger propose this some years ago?

It would just cause teams to give up defending and just go out to attack.

Triangular pitches, three sides play at the same time.

Edit: Maybe not necessarily triangular, but something like this:

The only thing I'd change is that you get no points for a nil nil. People go to football matches mostly to see goals. If both teams are too cautious or rubbish to score once then they get nothing.

A goalless draw should be punishable a bit more, I think.

Three draws in a row and on next presser manager is forced to wear a club's mascot outfit.

4 points for each goal that rolls and/or bounces over the line
6 points for each goal that is still air-bound as it goes in

Taking that idea further (and to help Vato/Madrid/Ronaldo out) maybe a basketball scoring system. 1 point for a goal in the area, 2 points for outside and 3 for over half way line.

Oppo goalie scoring = 4 points from any position on the pitch.

The football should be at all times on fire, to discourage pointless possession.

Also, the ground should be electrified, so players will want to stay on their feet at all costs.
