Looks like a wide open tournament this year. The ACC, Big East, SEC and Big 12 all have strong entries. The #2 seed look stronger than the #1s this year. I'm rooting for Pitt and Connecticut.

I'm heading out to Vegas on Friday.

I run the office pool for March Madness, so I'll be busy the next few days keeping up with scores and standings. One of the features of my pool is to give extra points for picking upsets in the first two rounds. Manhatten (#12) beating Florida (#5) was worth 7 points instead of one.

The only hitch is that office pools in California are "illegal lotteries" under Penal Code section 319 if any money changes hands, so it's only for pride. I can't understand why the progressive, modern state of California, with about a million casinos, race tracks, and cardrooms where gambling is legal, can't permit office pools on the Super Bowl and March Madness. Exactly how is that going to corrupt our morals, such as they are?

NY has a more sensible law. It's only illegal if the person running the pool keeps any of the proceeds. But it's customary to tip the bartenders that run them 10% of the winnings. And needless to say, any winnings must be reported to the IRS.
