More than one goalkeeper for penalty shootout

Someone commented yesterday during the cl shootout asking if this was possible.

Is it legal to have two goalkeepers in the 11(basically subing an outfield player for an extra GK at end of extra time) therefore changing which goalkeeper can save which players penalty/alternating between them?

If it isn't legal it should be I think, and could this give an advantage?

You can only field one goal keeper and that keeper is the only one permitted to handle the ball in the box during play so no you couldn't have two

Teams are allowed 1 GK on the pitch.

I think only if the keeper is seriously injured during the shootout can they change. But I remember Paddy Kenny in a shootout vs Arsenal where he literally couldn't move and Sheffield Utd couldn't do anything about it.

Otherwise unless you change your keeper before the end of extra time, that's it.

I would have thought if the keeper is injured in a penalty shootout that an outfield player would simply go in goal and become the GK.

This is what I mean, not two goalkeepers at once in goal. Have a goalkeeper come on as an outfield player.

It would be the same thing as switching the goalkeeper for an outfield player during the shootout

I don't think you can do that even in play

You can't switch your designated goalkeeper once play in extra time has ended. But you could, in theory, put another player in goal in the last few seconds of extra time, providing it's during a stoppage in play.

I don't get what the benefit would be? You can do what LVG did with Holland have a penalty specialist you sub just before penalties which makes sense. But why would you alternate between keepers during a live penalty shoot out?

Couple of points to clear here:

- Can you sub a keeper in for an outfield player during regular game time (like have Heaton playing midfield while having Onana in goal). Heaton would be considered a regular outfield player.

- Assuming the above is possible. Can you, after extra time, say the outfield player (Heaton) in this case will be the designated goalkeeper during the penalty shootout?

Sheffield United wouldn't have had a keeper to replace him with anyway.

No. But probably you can use a loophole, have the designated keeper claim that he is injured (how can that happen if he is not injured during the match, maybe he can fake a heart attack or something), and then you must choose a keeper from one of the players, and coincidentally choose Heaton.

Then a few days later, get banned for doing this.

I have to say that is an really interesting question for a change. So kudos for that.

You can't do it anyway, but I think it could some small psychological benefits. The first time anyone did it would cause confusion, might throw the other team off a bit.

Another psychological aspect could be if your backup goalie had saved a penalty from one of the takers in the past, switching to him when the same player is about to take one in the shoot out could be beneficial.

It's also a statement of sorts, "we think this goalkeeper has a better chance of saving a penalty against you than our other one, can you prove us wrong?". Could put a little added pressure on in general.
