We are in this thread which was started on a report about Newcastle's interest in signing him. So this discussion, which has no impact on what the club will do, is based on the assumption that there indeed is interest in him and an offer could have come if they had a positive response from us.

We cant talk about an upgrade to Eriksen who is doing an acceptable job in spite of his physical limitations. We have a plan for handling his stamina issues by having Fred share the load with him. It is Casemiro's alternate that we have to worry about and should plan for because a long term injury to him and we are done for the season. You know this and the club should know this.

My irritation, again basing on the assumption that there indeed is interest from Newcastle, is on us refusing to move him on for a more useful player because we can't replace him. In this window a suitable midfielder or two will move clubs and there will be threads asking about where we were when Brighton or so and so were picking this player up. It has happened for far too long and for far too often for my liking.

The club being for sale is just another excuse, Scot out for Midfielder x in isn't a deal breaker and the club is being run as a going concern until it changes ownership.
Correct. We all know we need a DM. We knew this for 5 years before we signed Casemiro. The problem is we all know how badly this club has been run for number of years.

Right so using Brighton as an example, I assume you are talking about Caceido. The issue is, you need someone who will come in and play. Even Brighton who signed Caceido in Jan, played 0 mins for them that season. So what is the point us signing someone who wont play?

Even Casemiro, who is a world class player, took 3/4 weeks to get up to speed as to the Ten Hag system. The issue for signing for the sake of signing is that we dont have 3/4 weeks for them to learn how to play a role.

Excuse or not, if we have no money, we have no money to buy players.

Your inability to comprehend how to debate a hypothetical scenario is hilarious!
Hypothetical scenarios such as I dont care what the manager sees in training, I see enough on match days is enough for me to know more than the manager a bit stupid.

You can have hypotheticals scenarios based on things you see a player do.

There is a platform for that, its called football manager.

Calling for a manager to play Lindelof or Charlie Savage in CDM in the PL because of "feelings" is not how a manager works.

Yes.

And why the feck are you even posting in this thread if it is simply a case of there being ‘no offer’? We are obviously discussing the hypothesis of a Newcastle offer. While we are discussing this hypothesis, we are working on the assumption that this offer os greater than £1.

Is it not fair to pick you up on saying we're letting a £30m offer go when there's no information to corroborate that? Take a breather, man.

This thread took a weird turn. You're all weirdos.

Stop philosophising over what a transfer offer is and get on with abusing each other over the hypotheticial minutae of any potential future deal.

He's kind of regressed IMO. I wonder can ETH get anything more out of him. People always seem hopeful that he'll sort out Sancho but McTom is never mentioned. Obviously 'cus he's less clearly talented - but there's definitely a player there somewhere IMO.

Genuinely laughed my tits off at this
When I played #6 instead of #8 at a mediocre amateur level my primary adjustment (apart from positioning obviously) was that I kicked people whenever I got dragged wide and felt the CBs might be unprotected and tried to win my share of headers despite being quite bad at that.

Back on topic, it's just impossible to believe there isn't a DM in West Africa or Northern Europe that can do the job, it's all Gueyes and Norgaards in those countries as far as I can tell. Senegal literally played 3 in the World Cup at one point and the Swiss were a Xhaka injury away from following suit.

It's plausible that Shaw (and Maguire I guess getting some games) at LCB and Lisandro as a #6 could save the season with Malacia playing at LB, but it's certainly not ideal and who knows if Ten Hag even considers it viable. It makes sense on paper as a stopgap if Casemiro went down.

Back on topic, I think we keep McTominay even if a big offer from Newcastle comes in and we sell him in the summer, even if it means 10M less or so. It's just too late in the window. We'd have had to do it January 1st and had the month to look for a DM. It's like De Gea. Ten Hag might want to replace him, but that's a question for the summer, though I much prefer De Gea as a stopgap.

Torn as to whether we sell him now or wait until the summer. On one hand we don't have the squad depth to let a senior squad player like him go this month, on the other hand its clear he's not very good, bordering on being a liability when he plays, so perhaps we might not get a better chance to cash in on him.

Im guessing Iqbal hasn't impressed in training, shame since he could have stepped up making the decision to sell McTominay all the easier.

Can see them being ruthlessly sold in the summer, mind.
Good, and I'm all for it.

Its about time we get a manager that is ruthless and kicks out mediocrity on any department.

We suffered from this for too long because of Woodward. Bloody "pink boots" Jones is still here FFS, thank goodness his contract is finally end in the summer.

We have a lot of this players that take a toll on our squad and budget. This isn't the local country club, this Manchester United!

Players like McTominay and Maguire that were used to being starters have convinced themselves that they're good enough to start in a top team. Spoiler alert: They're not.

He'll be moved on in the summer, hopefully along with AWB, Maguire and VDB.

No chance with Jones, is he out of contract? If he still has a contract he is staying. By this point, Jones probably knows his career as a professional footballer is done and is now just taking the money. I don't blame him for sticking around to be honest.
Yeah, his contract runs out in the summer, so we can re-purpose that money on someone who actually plays for us.

I think the trouble is Erik doesn't think he can find a backup midfielder in last few days

Sell in summer, not before. If Newcastle will not be interested in the summer so be it, sell him to the next highest bidder. But we need depth now.

Unfortunately Eriksen's injury means we can't consider selling now, and even before the injury our midfield was too thin to sell before bringing in something.

Well that isn’t exactly what I said though.

Sell him and buy Grillitsch from Ajax. He would cost a bargain and would help us more!
You have been watching that Sky deadline day documentary haven't you. I forgot that Wolves signed Kaladjzic then got injured

If We'll sell him and buy Sabitzer Permanently from Bayern with 1 year on his contract in the summer - I'm all for it

Hopefully Newcastles interest wasn’t just a January thing due to a lack of alternatives and they return in the summer for him. I want a big wedge of that oil money coming our way for a change. If they bought that pace merchant Gordon for £45m then we should be able to fetch that for Scotty boy.

They were linked with lots of different midfielders this window so who knows. where he was in terms or being a priority for them. If they finish in the top 4 I’d be surprised if they were still interested in him.

I am sure there will be 2-3 other teams interested in him though. We reallydo need to cash in on him, Maguire and Henderson in the summer as their values are only going to drop further.
