I really don't understand how domestic cricket works. Why was Matthew Hayden, who was on the verge of being selected for the Australian Test squad, playing for some tiny little local team in Bury?
He'd only made his domestic debut the winter before I think and it was 2 years after this that he made his Test debut so it's probably the local paper exaggerating.
It wasn't uncommon for top players to play league cricket back in the day though. Not so much now but you still get professionals coming over here in the summer to play at that kind of level.
