I'm playin sunday league mens footie this season. I just wondered if anyone has any tips from experience? or just any anecdotes etc?

I'm gonna be playing Right Back so any thoughts on this position would be great!

Cheers.

Oh and my tip. Playing hung over is not advised.

Right back is an easy position to play in.

A tip I was always told when I was young is too kick the left winger the first opportunity you will get. He will be afraid of his life after that and you'll have effectively taken him out of the game. It nearly always works.

Works when you're playing kids football, not so effective in adult football. Unless the winger is a bit of a fairy.

If you're a right back, just send the ball down the channels constantly. That way the onus will be on the forwards to do the work. Don't dive in, and get to tight to your winger when he has the ball.

Also, just watch the ball not the lad's feet.

Finally, when the ball's on the other side of the pitch, always be ready to tuck in behind your nearest centre back in case he gets beaten. That goes for when he steps out to try win the ball in the air too.

Thoughts on the role:

Never gave a winger space to shoot or cross. Stay super close to him if his faster than you, so that his pace can't be an advantage to him. Never cross your legs while marking a player with the ball, it makes you easier to dribble. Always be prepared to turn towards the ball when nutmegged by a winger or whoever.

Lastly support your winger in attack as often as you can. But done get caught too far upfield. Your lungs and your pride too could suffer the consequences.

good luck.

Thus advises the chief

From my experience (as an adult also), most wingers were fairies.

You my friend are clearly not familiar with the Bolton Sunday League.

Very rare i come up against a right winger that's a bit of a fairy but when i do, believe me i follow your advice exactly :D

Which means a lot of the time the winger, or his mate, or lots of his mates, will kick you. There are some nasty bastards about but they're not as brave, or as stupid, as they look. They pick their times to look hard, and if you start to copy them brainlessly you'll get hurt. Not the best advice for a novice.

I'm 22. And it's Liverpool sunday league, so not too many fairies whatsoever! Convicts, yes. Fairies, no.

That's valuable advice guys, cheers!

Any more tips would be helpful. Literally, anything!

I'm use to playing right wing, but haven't played much 11-a-side since school.

Advice on tackling, marking, positioning, defending headers etc... would all be appreciated!

Have played RB a fair bit, and I'd advocate showing them down the line at every opportunity, as from past experience a lot of LWs are right-footed, so of course prefer to cut inside.

So, showing them down the line onto their weaker foot would be advisable. Of course, best to quickly ascertain which is their stronger foot, and judge accordingly, if they have a sweet left-foot, might not be advisable to always show them down the line, but more often than not, I would show them down the line and use some pace to put the ball out for a throw or something.

In attack, see what the manager/captain wants, might not want you bombing forward, that was always the bit I found toughest, as physically it's tough trying to be up and down that flank, but I suspect a lot of the wingers will be lazy and not track back, so you won't exactly want to bomb on and get caught with him behind you.

Also, just keep an eye on who the defensive leader is, they'll call the line, and how deep you are and when you push up to perhaps play people offside.

Most flat back fours at county level sunday league play as a really tight unit. None of this attacking full back malarky. Just listen to the centre back that organises the line and you'll be fine. Be brave in the air because you will take elbows to the face.

Get a mate to watch your car.

1. Don't let the opposition winger get behind you - unless your center back is trying to play for an offside.
2. Cover your center back when he gets pulled to the left or pushes forward.
3. Usher the opposition winger away from goal when he comes up the field.
4. For tricky opposition wingers don't rush in and stick your leg out - he'll dribble past you. Stick with him and watch the ball.
5. If the opposition winger is a speed demon don't give him time on the ball to set himself up for a run. If he receives the ball facing his goal, don't give him time to turn.
6. Try not to pass the ball across the back line - most times it gets intercepted.
7. When your goalkeeper has the ball don't stand around in the middle but push up and get close to the wings so that he can get the ball to you quickly and you can start the attack.
8. If your winger is a lazy git shout at him and make him put in a shift.
9. Some right backs go right up the field with an attack and never come back in time when the opposition counter attacks - your first priority is making sure the opposition doesn't score. Anything you can provide in attack is generally considered a bonus in most Sunday leagues.
10. Have fun - if you are going to hate being a right back you'll have a tough time being any good at it.

If he's a right footed winger, force him out wide rather than letting him cut inside.

I used to play RB till i switched to Defensive Mid because I lacked pace.

Top tips for right back though:
*You will most likely have to deal with the speedy folk, so you can do one of two things.
- Tackle the shit out of them, granting you so-called "tactical fouls" so your team can get back.
-Stay uber close so that they dont out pace you.

*Head up and look at your support = Your right winger and your Centre Mid, NOT YOUR CENTRE BACKS! A pass across the back four if intercepted = goal.

*For Gods sake if you're gonna run up the field, track back. Or at least tell the winger to cover you.

*Dont be afraid to shoot if you've got a decent shot on you. My mate was top scorer at LB!

*Help out your CB's, not everyones a Vidic. Especially not in Sunday league.

1. Except when your 'uber close' and they turn you and leave you for dead. A cushion is always advisable against someone who is faster then you. If they can out pace you, you need to get them to try and beat you with trickery, and not fall for it obviously.

2. If your playing with retards this is true.

Having played RB and LB a good tip is don't get caught in possession by the oppo winger. You'll have to race back and you'll be leaving a lot of space behind you. So if there's nothing on, hoof it down the line or down the line for a thrown in. This gives you a breather and you can blame your winger for not supporting you better. If you shout enough at the winger for not helping you the manager and captain will tell him as well.

Like others have said you'll not be expected to be playing like Evra and the onus will be on keeping the line at the back and not making penetrating runs into the oppo half. Just hope that their LB stays in his half.

Tactical fouls and booting it out are your friends if you have a nippy and skillful winger against you. Remember your job is to help keep a clean sheet, if you contribute to that no more needs to be asked of you. It's up to your winger to make the play so look to him when feeding it out from defence, cross field passes to the CB are asking for trouble, especially if he's not that good.

Errrr...that's all I can think of. Just enjoy it and suss out early on if the oppo winger is right or left footed, that way you will know if he'll run down the line or cut inside.

When the winger is dribbling towards you try and stand more side on so that if he knocks it past you your already half turned round. Makes a big difference.

intercept the ball before he gets it, i was taught that the easiest way of defending is stealing the ball before the wingers has it. so the best way of positioning oneself is being between the passer and the receiver of the ball (i'm next to him but on this side where is expecting a ball from) and in the other case - being closer to your own goal.

(1) Communicate ! Seriously, don't stop talking and encourage the rest of the back four to do it too.
(2) Don't play with a hanngover - EVER.
(3) Always look for the forward pass and support your midfield whenever you can.
(4) Also, don't be afraid to get a foot in no matter how "hard" your opponent thinks he is.
(5) Stay switched on and concentrate on the game and the positions of your team-mates and opponents, it's the only way to see space, spot gaps etc.

A good full-back should be useful in attack as well as competent in defence ! I play centre half and I have one brilliant full-back beside me (and one not so great). His biggest flaw (the lad who isn't so great) is ball watching. It messes up his positional sense........GOOD LUCK !!!

Number 2 is wrong. If you don't play sunday league with a hangover you're not in the right place.

Agree.

Running round a football pitch feeling like absolute shit from the night before is part and parcel of a normal Sunday morning for me.

Haha i find the entire concept of this thread hilarious.

It's not gonna help him, he's gonna turn up on Sunday trying to remember about a million things and it'll just be a hindrance surely?

It'll just be a kick around with loads of overweight forty year olds.. just have a laugh and enjoy yourself would be my advice.

If you don't know the simple things on the football pitch at 22 it's too late for you, you're never gonna learn completley. So just have fun and don't overract when some fat cnut stands on your foot or pinches your nipple or balls on purpose.

The winger wants to get the ball under control, whereas you can throw pride to the wind and just make sure you get the first whack at it and put it anywhere at all. Do this a few times and even if his head doesn't go down (which is likely) his mates will stop passing to him. It won't look good but it works against people quicker or more skillful than you. Not if they're stronger though, you'll have to stand off them.

Exactly. That ball belongs to you and don't let any bitch-ass left winger take what doesn't belong to him away from you.

Also 50-50 balls are 100-0 balls in your favor if your studs are high enough.

Cheers lads. A lot of useful tips here!

I'm playing in four hours so I'll let you know how it goes!

You should inform your Sunday League team that they're doing it wrong. Today is Thursday.

this is what i do when i play at the back and i also make sure that few of first tackles are hard. You hardly ever get booked in the opening minutes of a games but you can give some knocks to carry for a whole game.
