OK, I might be totally out of era here, but can anyone help me give me some info on this sporting event?

1. From when and till when does it take place?
2. Do they compete day by day? One can win today but lose tomorrow?
3. Who was the winner last year and why is it exciting this year?

You can find all the answers on the net, but to answer your Q2 they compete day to day as well as over the entire 2 weeks. They race a stage a day and each day has a winner - stage winner. All day's time are added together to determine the overall winner.

One of the toughest sports around......

Lance Armstrong will easily win barring any mishaps.

David Millar has recently shown a big improvement in his hill climbing, if he continues that trend a top 10 finish could be on.

Did you read his book "It's not about the bike, my journey back to life" about his recovery from cancer - and then coming back to win the Tour De France? It's an excellent book

'tis a silly place
I've read it - it's a very good read. Just reading about the strains he puts himself through to be the best gets me tired!

it's supposed to be exciting this year because it's 100 years since the first one took place apparently.. the real reason though is because Kraftwerk are re-releasing their song 'Tour De France' from 1983 with new mixes at the same time ;)

right, an update....

David Millar would have easlily won the prologue if his chain hadnt come off his bike in the final kilometer.

The crash in the first stage has left it's mark. Leipfheimer is out whilst Tyler Hamilton is riding with a broken collerbone... kin nutter.

Good tour so far for the aussies, why are these cnuts so good at sport...

Jan Ulrich has looked impressive so far, should be interesting to see how he does in the mountains.

the aussies can feck back off now.... ;)

After yesterday's team time trial Armstrong already looks to be home and dry.

His main challenge will almost certainly come from Der Jan Ulrich and Beloki.

I reckon the tour will already be as good as over after Sunday's stage to Alpe D'Huez.

accordng to www.letour.com Jens Voigts has just been stung by a bee and Tylor Hamilton bandage is causing him irritation.

(have a look at the alpe d'huez hill climb on sunday matey, you wont be dissapointed..... cycling is a top sport, toughest sport there is.)

kin rest day today. No cycling. Tyler Hamilton gets an extra day to heal. Though considering that he appears not to have functioning pain nerves it shouldn't matter too much.

The race enters the Pyrenees where David Millar among others has been predicting that Armstrong will run into trouble. So far no sign. US Postal keep hauling breakaways back into the peloton

Nearing the end of the time trial, getting pretty tense now...

Ullrich is in the lead after 33 (out of 47) kilometers.

Salles (33km):
1.J.Ullrich (Ger) 40'28"
2.L.Armstrong (VS) 41'08"
3.T.Hamilton (VS/CSC) 42'16"
4.H.Zubeldia (Spa/Euskaltel) 42'20"

He does it again and takes another 7 secs out of Armstrong.

7+12=19" that is.

Current Standings:
1. Amstrong
2. Ullrich (+15")
3. Vinokourov (+1'01")

I think Amstrong is in trouble. He's showing all the signs of a champ on the way down. When he went after Mayo on the first climb I wasn't sure if he was impressive or bluffing.

At the moment I think I tend to go for the latter. His team is strong, but faltering (every time he really needs them is the exact time when they can't follow anymore)

But that doesn't mean things could be different tomorrow. I'm pretty sure that by Monday night we know who will win this Tour de France.

I think I'll go with Ullrich at the moment, but small things could change a lot. If it's true that Ullrich is struggling with his digestive system he has no chance at all.

Wait & see I guess...

Armstrong will go bust in one of the next 2 stages. He´s getting tired from the constant attacks.

Unfortunately that's true... though I would like to see Lance join the ranks of the 5 time winners. :(

I wouldn't want to be a Tour rider. All those people almost blocking the road, moving aside in the last bloody second to let the riders pass, it's just frightning. And it only takes one idiot who doesn't move fast enough to slightly touch the champion and cause a fall.
