U18s: Derby day

United's Academy side are aiming to stop Manchester City completing a rare treble when the U18 teams meet on Saturday at 10am.

City have already beaten the Reds at senior (1-0) and reserve (3-1) level and will be confident their Academy squad can do the business at Platt Lane.

The Blues head into the match undefeated at the top the table, having conceded just four goals all season. But United won't be intimidated by a City team keen to follow in the footsteps of Academy graduates Micah Richards, Nedum Onuoha, Michael Johnson and Joey Barton.

After a poor start to the season, Paul McGuinness' Reds have registered four consecutive 1-0 wins to climb to third place in the league. Defensively sound, robust in midfield and capable of scoring from anywhere (six different players have found the net already this season), United have more than enough talent to dent the Blues' unbeaten record.

United lost 2-3 at Platt Lane this morning........

Magnus Eikrem scored the first goal from a free kick before a defensive mistake let City back in the game. Danny Welbeck missed a penalty before half time.

City scored twice in the second half after some poor defending to take a 3-1 lead before Federico Macheda pulled one back after his shot from outside the box was deflected past the keeper. United had virtually all of the second half but could not break down the City defence.

MCFC U18s 3 - 2 MUFC U18s

Manchester United were yet again shown by the better half of Manchester how to develop young players with the game against the league leaders being a loss. United also had a rather favourable referee who decided to award them a very generous penalty, but order was resumed as England youth international, Danny Welbeck had his shot saved by Filip Mentel. City's goals came from Robbie Mak, Ian Daly and Donal McDermott. United had taken an early lead, but Mak equalized soon after. City took the score to three, one; but later in the game they took their foot of the pedal and allowed United to score a soft goal to give the score line a less realistic reading of the game which City controlled for the most part. Having played third place United, City go away next week to second place Everton where they will hope to stamp their authority on the league title that they easily won last season.

City: Mentel(GK), Trippier, McGivern, Ramsey, Mee, Kay, Weiss, Tsiaklis, I Daly, Mak, McDermott.

Subs: Clegg(GK), Morris, Poole, D Ball, Robinson.

City's U16s could not continue their winning ways but fought out a one all draw with United's U16s.
