Almost certainly because there was a split vote between a number of United players IIRC. Good chunk of that squad could have won it and there'd have been no debating it.

Possibly, I think they realised the mistake as Roy Keane got it the year after

Dwight Yorke did get the official PL POTY Award at least

our Ballon d'or voting also got quite split that year with 7 different United players getting votes
