Why do United fans seem to hate squad depth?

Think it's the fear some good players will get annoyed at lower game time and leave / inability to keep everyone happy etc.

Look what happened to James because we overplayed him. Depth is important. If Bruno gets injured I don’t think we will break down teams at all

Oh God not this again, spent too much time arguing about signing Sancho in the other thread, but apparently we couldn't possibly have sancho, rashford, Martial, and Greenwood.

Technically if you sign someone for XI, it'll also improve the quality of squad depth. We get Sancho, he could cover Bruno's spot last night not just the wing.

I don’t think overplaying is James problem. He’s just not very good.

Squad depth and squad harmony has to be balanced.

Smaller squad, everyone gets more playing time individually but squad is knackered after about 10 games.

Bigger squad, everyone gets less playing time individually (and some may not be happy about that) but we run less risk of running people into the ground.

As always, it's all about finding the balance.

Yesterday served as a nice little reminder of this given how our run had a few people arguing against adding more quality this summer. Football teams will be weaker when weaker players play rather than when good players play, when the good players have a bad game and there's not much quality on the bench, you're in real trouble. Football isn't rocket science.

It's why Pep demands a billion dollar squad chocked with options anywhere he goes. He can’t work with much less to achieve the aims he wants. It's why the likes of Bayern, Barca and Real spare little expense to make sure their squads are always stocked with quality.

I'm not saying we must also spend boatloads of cash on a whole new XI but just that there shouldn't be any argument or reluctance over whether to try to improve depth in all areas if we're to aim for what a club like this should always be aiming for next season and that's challenging on all fronts.

Most fans here are fan boys of certain players in the squad be it Pogba, Martial or Rashford. So any mention of quality players who could provide competition to their favourite players is dismissed. But as Gary Neville said yesterday, the idea that we should not buy Sancho because of Greenwood is stupid, because Fergie used to have 4 class strikers etc and managed to play them all. To answer your question OP anyone who is against squad depth doesn't understand football in the first place. We had 2 defenders going off injured yesterday and unless you have quality replacements your game regresses instantly. To win the league now more so than ever against City Squad and Liverpool, you must have squad depth, not just any depth but quality squad depth.

Because Lingard for one isn't good enough. All of the other top clubs keep spending.
