Sir Alex Ferguson rules out Manchester United signings in January
Following his side's 3-1 victory over Sunderland, the Red Devils boss, also buoyed by the return of Nemanja Vidic, has ruled out bringing in reinforcements in the transfer window'

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out any purchases in the January transfer window following his side's comfortable 3-1 win over Sunderland.

The victory, courtesy of goals from Robin van Persie, Tom Cleverley and Wayne Rooney, means they retain their six-point lead over rivals Manchester City in second.

It also means that the Red Devils have won their last five Premier League games, a record that has left the Scotsman adamant that reinforcements in January are unnecessary.

"I will not be bringing anybody in, in January - definitely not," Sir Alex, who has been linked with a move for Arsenal's Theo Walcott, told the Mail on Sunday.

The 70-year-old was also buoyed by the return of Nemanja Vidic, albeit one confined to a second-half substitute appearance, as he extolled the virtues of his captain.

"It will take a bit of time but that is a start. He is a warrior and he is our captain," he added to reporters.

"He always battles for you and sticks his head on that ball in the penalty area. That is what he is great at."

Seems pretty categorical that.

It does seem categorical. Looks like Nani might be staying then, would be surprised if Fergie sold him without bringing in another winger.

Yep, and if that's the only thing that comes out of the January window I'll be pretty happy with it. Of course we ought to be buying a midfielder, but I had zero expectations of that anyway.

Good? Why do we want to sign anyone in January? Leave it till the summer if you're that desperate. Money's tight, and prices shoot up in January. Weren't Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres sold for a combined total of £85m? When was that?

Yeah Brightonian me too to be fair, it's really wierd we've needed one for a few years.

You can always get goods transfers though, Cisse last year for example. Newcastle got Ben Arfa in January as well IIRC, obviously Pool getting Suarez as well. All great business.

You can, but these signings are usually rather urgent. Arshavin was another. Good signing, but they needed to make him. I expect us to win the league anyway, and forking out over the odds for a player who won't make us more likely to do that is, IMO, silly.

There truly is no urgent need to be addressed anyway. The only position which is debatable is central midfield. But I actually really like the options we already have. Especially if Ando can last four months without getting injured, we're actually in great shape in terms of personnel. So Fergie is only telling us what we already know.

Yeah I don't think we urgently need to bring anyone in, unless we sold Nani in which case we would be light on the flanks. I think we will win the league too, so the only real reason would be to make a run for the Champions League, which a CM would set us up for IMO.

Also, my point was more that you can always get a good bargain no matter which window, not that we should necessarily do it this time. That said, if we could get another Vidic/Evra combo for £12million then I would take it

I just don't see this any more. I agree that our midfield options are often underrated, but they're still sorely lacking. A quick glance at the Cleverley thread will prove that I'm a raving fan of the lad, and likewise Anderson. But the fact remains that Anderson is massively injury prone, and can't be considered a serious option for a first choice midfielder. Carrick's decent, though he blows hot and cold over the course of a season.

Outside of those three, who fit and firing make a passable if not dazzling first-choice trio for a team of our stature, it's a wasteland. Scholes and Giggs really have no place starting matches any more, and if they don't see the writing on the wall at the end of this season I'll be very surprised. Fletcher is unlikely to ever regain the fitness to become a top-class player again. Powell is a kid, and shouldn't factor into it.

I agree that in a lot of cases, January transfers are unwise. And anyone who expected one from us doesn't know Fergie very well. But if we go yet another summer without some serious midfield reinforcement, it will be even more mind-boggling than it was last summer.

How can you forget Vidic and Evra?

Wasn't Smalling January as well?

Also if Fergie says something about transfers, most of the times it is best to take it with a pinch of salt or expect the opposite.

Taken with a pinch of salt, at this moment he may think we arent bringing anyone in but things change as we come closer to the transfer window and also potential long term targets may become targets of rival teams and we are "forced into action"

basically until its Feb 1st I wont believe it Fergie :D

I reckon there may be a few youngsters coming and going.

Hey gambs! Couldn't resist a transfer thread now, could you:D I would agree that some young ones could be moving, possibly on loans.

You don't think I'd let a little thing like Sir Alex saying no signings in January stop me did you?

Considering IMO, Fletcher, Giggs and Scholes are only really still at the club because the boss is compassionate and they are like sons to him, he does not want to let them go until he really really has to.

This season they have failed to really make any difference to our team, and we need 2 other top class players who can help control the midfield.

But until the players decide enough is enough they will still be on our books, perhaps they deserve that but it should not stop us buying young talent who can make an actual difference.

My Summer prediction. We replace Scholes with Lampard and Giggs with Malouda.

The only excuse I could think of to dip into the market was if Nani was sold and that we'd have to replace him. I guess it's a good sign that Fergie says we're not going to.

I'd be pissed though if we sell Nani in the Summer - we'd have got a few million more if we'd sell him this January.

In all honestly I just cant see Scholes playing next season. His legs are gone. Giggs might be back.

We will sign one CM but I think we should buy two.

No surprise really. We arent that bad injury wise compared to last season. Plus we never do that type of business in Jan anyways.

Vidic/Evra/Saha even Dong

I am not surprised by these comments as it's typical Fergie who will then sign someone out of the blue.

Not surprised. Top of league.Squad players like Welbeck, Hernandez, Fletch, Nick Powell all need more games. Injured players like Kagawa, Ando will also return and need minutes under their belt. Signing a player might reduce their playing times- does not make sense

See also: (i) A signing does not make sense if price is inflated & if (ii) top class quality is not there.

Only movement will probably be loan deals out for our youth players since we were dumped out of FA Youth Cup. Maybe 1 low-key youth signing.

Don't really see who we could buy in this window , so he will either get in some youngsters or loan them out.

Don't think anyone in the Youth cup squad is ready for a loan tbh.

Macheda, Bebe and the likes being sold might clear space for some of them to be promoted though.

The youth loans will come from the U21's if any.

If we sell Nani then we better get someone new in.
