Former England captain David Beckham is to retire at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old signed a five-month deal at Paris St-Germain in January and donated all of his salary to charity.

Beckham joined Manchester United as a 14-year-old and made 398 appearances, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

He moved to Real Madrid in 2003, winning the La Liga title in 2007 before a switch to the United States with LA Galaxy.

The midfielder made his England debut against Moldova in 1996 and captained the side from 2000 to 2006, making his 115th and final England appearance in a 3-0 win over Belarus in 2009.

Remarkable and amazing career from a very special athlete. And a genuine footballing legend.

Just a shame that he is not a Manchester United legend and that he chose to leave our club to pursue his own fame and brand. But from his point of view, that would have hindered an amazing professional experience at the very best clubs in Europe with the very best players and managers of his era.

In summary a genuinely glittering career, a shame we were just a part of it.

Always admired the guy. Wished he stayed with us longer, but I guess we would have never have seen Ronaldo then.

A great guy off the pitch it seems as well - and donating his lucrative salary to charity in his last season epitomizes him.

Interesting to see what he'll do now. Pundit, coach or just be an ambassador.

So where does he rank in terms of legends of football?

For one so famous, his ability must be right up there with Pele, Best and Maradona....Right?

Excellent player, especially for us. A scarily good workrate, wonderful crossing ability. But as an round player, can he be classed as WC?

Not for me.

Probably the player I have been most sad about leaving our club, was my idol as a child. He's been a great ambassador to the game and I really hope he stays in it as a coaching or managerial role.

Wait...Beckham was a footballer? I always thought he was one of those reality TV stars or something.

It might be a while before England sees another like him in terms of star power. Great for the media, great for the game. The complete package.

How can any United fan who saw Beckham between 98-01 doubt he was world class.

I hate using stats to argue a players case, but in Bekcham's case it is remarkable. In 534 top-flight league games, he scored or assisted 242 goals. That is an astonishing record for a right midfielder - not a winger - people forget he did as much defending as attacking. He has been a world class player accross his career, I can't see how anyone can argue that. He gets under-rated because of the 3 geniuses he was in the same midfield as in 1999, but he has been a phenominal footballer for every club he has played for.

A great footballer, a great role model, a great sporting person.

For a period, certainly. He may not have had the flair of Giggs or the finesse of Scholes, but he was more integral than both to the 99-01 team, such was his ruthless productivity. He was probably the indispensable player of the '99 team.

United legend no doubt, but as a football fanatic I cringe at the underwear ads and the shameless self-promotion. Enough was enough about a decade ago.

Single greatest memory of Beckham's long career exploits? Probably the free kick v Greece, but that first goal v Arsenal in that glorious semifinal v Arsenal is a close second for me.

I think his decision to go to America for the money rather than another big club in Italy or Germany will stop him being considered a truly great player. If he'd gone to AC after Madrid, Would have been a whole different ball game.

That's BS. Big deal, he went to America. Look at what he did at United, Milan and Madrid and judge him.

Look at the difference he made to football in the USA. No other footballer could have done that - he succeeded where others have failed.

United legend no doubt
He is a footballing legend no doubt, but there is plenty of doubt and debate as to whether he is deserving of the recognition of be remembered as a Manchester United legend.

I agree with you on this entirely. But on the bolded part, has he actually done that much? I actually think that is incredible considering he has been playing 5 years in America, as well as being a right midfielder as you say. His game isn't like wide players nowadays like Ronaldo or Bale, where you have a lot more freedom in what you do. He got most of his goals and assists through his set piece taking, which I still think is some of the best I've ever seen. The era of the great United youngsters is slowly coming to and end, and only one remains in the Welsh Wizard, sad times indeed.

I think you underestimate what Beckham did for football in the States. He made it a much more popular sport, the amount of 'stars' that have followed his move over there nowadays.
