The way it's going at the minute with City & United, it reminds me of Rocky IV with Drago (City) being trained using all the latest technology, knocking down everything in his path. Rocky (United), a once great champion, trains using old methods. Maybe it will end the same way with us beating City, with all their fancy gadgets!
Does that make Liverpool, Apollo Creed?

To be honest this is obviously done. They're probably just waiting for a window in Holland's WC prep to be able to announce it and do a proper presser. It would be astonishing if things changed now.

This fella on twitter has been pretty clued up on the majority of the goings on - seems to share the sentiments of @bishblaize above. When you think about it, it makes sense.

It seems to me itd be more of a distraction NOT announcing it as this stage. When its announced he can spend an hour or whatever answering questions and then say, no more until after the WC. Get it out of the way. As opposed to now where he must be getting questions about it every five minutes and he cant answer them so they keep on asking.

feels so different to the Moyes appointment....

we convinced ourselves that Fergie had made the right decision despite all the evidence suggesting otherwise...

Van Gaal is a great of the game and certainly one of the elite managers of the past 20 years - he won't suffer players who don't try, he will get the best out of players - my only worry is the World Cup and he obviously needs time to get our preparations ready for next season - the guy will surely take a holiday after the World Cup as well.

With the right signings (I seriously hope targets have been identified and Giggs/Woodward are on it) I think we will challenge for the league next season - especially with no European distractions - can see some good sup runs too

I agree - everyone knows it's happening, and Utd/LvG messing about the hacks with the timing of the announcement isn't going to calm things any.

You speak for yourself mate, he was my worst nightmare as the replacement for SAF and unfortunately the the nightmare came true in all it's technicoloured glory.

I get the feeling that we have become average to poor, managing our media, only marginally bettering the incompetence of our CEO.

I have no faith in the transfer market dealings this summer, we don't seem sharp enough.

Too many journalists with too many column inches to fill now right now. They're basically getting paid to copy each others guesstimates.

At least the world cup will provide respite in terms of transfer speculation.

This is so stupid. We are afraid of disturbing their WC preparations by announcing something that pretty much everyone already knows is happening.

If anything, not announcing it, seems to be disturbing their WC preparations even more since journos are constantly asking LVG about United.

Just announce it FFS.

I dont see why they cant say

"LVG appointed Manchester United manager, on initial 2 year deal. Ryan Giggs to be his assistant.

No further comment will be given until after the next Dutch NT match"

Can't bring myself to care, and I'm not sure why. The appointment/Van Gaal should be exciting, but it's just...flat. Looking forward to the transfers more

Simple solution - van Gaal turns up to the next Dutch press conference clutching a long duffle bag. He opens up the bag and takes out a massive broadsword, which he places delicately on the table in front of him. Then, as he looks around the room at the shaking journalists, he starts to grin and chuckle. His chuckle becomes a manic laugh and his eyes widen, still staring around the room, as the press officer beside him says "Mr van Gaal will be happy to answer any questions you have regarding Manchester United, provided you can survive".

The club should employ you as a press officer

Quite simple....cause the deal is not agreed yet.
Im not sure about that. For me the fact the decision was taken about Woods and Rio suggests the deal is agreed. If there was any doubt at all that Van Gaal would be our next manager they would have held off letting them go, because another manager might want to keep them. So I think the hold up is about finer details (which might include Giggs, so maybe that part of the announcement GB suggested would not be possible) and/or WC preparations.

like many I told myself Fergie had got 9/10 big decisions right for every Stam sale or failure to strengthen midfield. I had to trust his judgement if only in hope.

What makes me laugh is this idea that this friendly came out of the blue. Someone best tell Woodward there's a world cup on in case he isn't aware and we're forced to delay the announcement until after then.

I think this is where Giggsy's role will be important. He knows the club inside out. Van Gaal will communicate Giggs and that way we can still do what he wills through Giggs, who by now will know what to do as he's been in the hot- seat. Cool yes?

Wonder if it's a slow day for news ?
Who said that the deal would be finalised before the WC ? The Guardian ?
It is a slow news day. Journalists announcing that yesterday's speculation wasn't entirely accurate and replacing it with more speculation.

I'm think the Club has made the best possible choice.
Yep, whatever happens with this appointment, we can't really point fingers and say 'the club should have gotten such and such'.

There's nobody better out of who's available.
