I think we need a new CB this summer due to Vidic and Ferdinand leaving but the big question is WHO?
I initially wanted Mangala but I have heard people say he has struggled in certain games so now I am not sure.
Who would you guys choose?

Surely De Vrij and Indi are only in there because they are Dutch? They are not on the same level as others on the list.

Yeah, I don't see the point in going for a young player with potential like them when that's what we currently have.

Really rate Vertonghen, Evans-Vertonghen would be one of the the best ball playing partnership there is. Don't think Hummels would be interested in a move so I would say Mangala if not Vertonghen.

Hummels and Benatia are significantly better than the others on the list and either of them would be great, although Garay would be perfectly fine as a relatively low-cost experienced option. I'd avoid Mangala, who looks ridiculously overpriced. A quality defence seems to be as much about organisation as it is about outstanding individuals (look at what Mourinho has gotten out of Cahill-Terry this season for example), so if it comes down to a choice, I'd rather the really big money was spent on improving midfield and wide options.

They're all great prospects, but do you not think that given the mix of cb's currently at the club, an experienced player should be brought in?

Thought about it but there are very few quality central defenders around these days. Most of them are already at big clubs, others seem committed to the cause and might not leave even if we order fat wages (Hummels :() and some like Benatia are likely to join City..

Keeping that in mind I think it would serve us well to get one of the best young CBs in Europe and develop them at the club. That way we could potentially have a loyal player for the ext 10-12 seasons. :)

PS : 4th choice - John Stones
5th choice - Doria

I would only buy a left footed CB, because we need left footed CB if we buying a CB. :p

I would be happy with Chiellini as an experienced choice, Vertonghen as an underrated realistic choice, Mangala for mental money gamble it all choice and Martins Indi for sensible prospect for the future choice :houllier:

hummels would be my first dream choice. unlikely but maybe van gaal can make something happen here. him and evans and imagine the type of football we are going to play from the back!

benatia seems to be rated very highly here, got to be honest never watched him play.

guess we'll most probably end up with a dutch international. so i'll go for bruno matias indi if this is the case.

Has to be Hummels doesn't it. Won't happen though, he seems to love Dortmund. It's going to be very tough for us to prize away players from established CL playing team this summer. Unless we offer huge money which we won't pay over the odds

Voted for Vertonghen. Levy wouldn't sell him to us but he's at a good age, has Premier League experience and is excellent in two positions (two positions we're weak in).

I voted other because I thought the poll was about who I think we'll get as opposed to who I'd want us to get. I'd personally like Hummels or Vertonghen as they are the only 2 I've seen much of and they are both good quality and in the right age range.

Either Hummels or Garay. Both are around the ideal age for a centre back that we should target and also have plenty of experience domestically at club level and also on the international stage - Garay to a lesser extent. I'd probably opt for Hummels though, purely as he is a superb defender and an improvement on most centre backs.

I rate all of Evans, Jones and Smalling so rather than another youngster I would like to see us go for experience. A solid, consistent CB of about 30 would be fine for me.

Hummels by quite some way, but he's also probably the lest likely for us to be able to get.

Banatia, Mangala and Lovren would follow.

We already have young talent in our center backs. I want us to sign an established center back who is at his peak and that's why I wasn't bothered about the price of that supposed Miranda rumor in AS two weeks ago.

I agree - surely at least one of those will come good (Jones would be my guess), but they need a steady experienced head alongside them.

I would be more surprised if we did sign a first choice CB. Van Gaal went to Bayern and promoted Badstuber and decided he was good enough as first choice. Smalling, Evans and Jones are all better CBs than he's ever been. Michael Keane is also in reserve and he has a bit of ability on the ball which LVG is known to like. I can see Evans +1 as our CBs with Jones being coached towards being another ball playing CB and hopefully Smalling improving on the ball too.

There's also the possibility that he goes to 3 at the back like with the Netherlands and uses wingbacks.

How good are they defending? That should be the no1 priority. If a defender is excellent at defending, it doesn't matter whether he is Beckenbauer on the ball. That is just a nice bonus for a defender. If a defender is average at defending, it doesn't matter if he is Maradona like on the ball. He is a defender, his main job is to defend.

Wait, what? How many games of Badstuber have you actually seen? I´m not even a big fan of him, but rate him as a top quality central defender on his peak, who had even more potential. For a long time him and Hummels were seen as the ideal CB pair for Germany. If he woudn´t have such bad luck with injuries, he would most likely be Bayern´s first choice CB right now. His passing game and positioning are on a completely different level compared to the current United players.

Plenty. He's always looked dodgy. Just because he's rated in Germany doesn't make him a good CB. So is Boateng and he isn't convincing either. Dante is the first good CB Bayern have had for a long time. Evans plays the ball out of defence just as well as Badstuber whilst being a better defender on top.
