I think mata deserves to play, i think van gaal is trying to get van persie up to speed. If he doesnt perform mata will come in, but he thinks goals will win him the games and in that department rooney ,falcao and van persie are ahead of him.
Its about getting the squad up to speed. I am sure he will be asked about in the pre match interview. Van gaal will give an honest answer simple.

Work rate might be more important today, as much as it hurts to see Mata drop out, he lacks presence when we don't have the ball.
Fair enough. If he's doing this as a tactical response to Leicester's game I'd be happy. What worries me is when Mata came off against QPR we completely slowed down and resorted to the Rooney long diagonal balls.

The line up makes sense. 2 world class centre forwards will hopefully scare the shit out of Leicester City's defenders,

BIG sam is in the house on star sports 4 in india, He looks chuffed at beating liverpool and will tell his tactics on how he got at them yesterdy. I like it when managers are on show and allowed to go on about tactics unplugged.

A lot of people on here complaining about the RvP selection but we all know what he can do. If he's off - form, as he has been, then I can understand the manager's decision to try and play him into form. Once he gets over this patch he will score lots of goals. Practically won us the championship not so long ago. Rooney's horrible first touch aside, that's an impressive group of attacking players that we can put out.

Yeah, that annoyed me too, but Di Maria and Rafael came off last week too which took a lot of energy out of the side.

That's a pretty petty excuse, really. van Persie has been below par, whilst Mata has been in great form in goalscoring and creating.
Maybe so but I can see his thinking in making the change. That's the problem with no champions league football, a smaller amount of games to keep the squad happy.

Harsh on Mata. If anyon should've been dropped it was Van Persie. Hopefully it pays off.

Already can see this is a abad idea, Mata is ten times better than Rooney at no 10 we're sacrificing passing fluidity purely to fit in Rooney and 3 strikers which is probably not going to work as well

Hello all, newbie here! I hope we get tested more in this game than we did in against QPR, we need to see how our midfielders work under pressure. I would also like to see Falcao to get some game time.

Quite concerned with LVG's faith in Blackett.
Well Shaw hasn't shown to be 100% fit, Smalling is just coming back and Jones is injured. That plus Blackett playing quite well in all games so far, so why not. He could also be a beast in training. He is getting his reward for stepping up.

This must be the last time Rooney can prove himself as a good no. 10. For me, Rooney isn't and will never be a world class no. 10, which means, that no. 10 either should be for Mata, who was good last match or Januzaj, because they have the technique in small areas and the imagination to create something out of nothing. Therefore Rooney, Falcao and RvP should be competing for the striker-positions.

Why Rooney behind Robin and Falcao, that's shit imo. I hope he will bring in Mata if it doesn't work and it won't. Otherwise a good lineup :)

I absolutely hate Gary Neville these days, no wonder everyone other than United fans think he's a cnut!

Mata has 8 goals in his last 10 games along with a number of assists and all he cares about is running up and down the wing, box to box etc.... feck of Gary.
    What did he say?

When I look at the lineup, it almost hints VG wants a Ronaldo to play in mata's position, but in a free role position , especially when he talked about him

    HELLO
It's one match - there'll be games where van Persie/Falcao or Mata don't play. Mata has played 4 out of five so far, Falcao starts his first and RvP starts his fourth.

RvP is still one of the best strikers in football, if he hits form then it massively increases our chances of having a good season - a few bad performance doesn't mean he's totally useless.

That is my same worry. We looked far more threatening with Mata on.

Oh van Nistlerooy  Falcao will do well to be close to as good a finisher for us as he was.

Not happy that Matas on the bench but I can see the thinking behind it in having a fresh pair of legs on the bench in key positions

And if that doesn't work out, 'oh shit I just made him captain, and the captain always plays'.
