Yeah, I agree. Was scared someone would pick Miguel Munoz and steal Puskas from me after I picked Guttmann, he's another one who has a really interesting playerpool in my opinion. I also hoped that someone would pick Sacchi instead of going for Capello again, Sacchi was so much more interesting as a character and so much more influential in terms of tactical development.
Indeed.

Capello might've easily caused trouble for a Sacchi manager here, though. Hard to assemble a really top notch Sacchi team without certain key players - and those would've been under threat from the Capello mob.

Yeah, but Sacchi's guys could play with an invisible ball and make Capello's boys look totally clueless. That has to be worth something, right?

A never-nude? I thought he just liked cut-offs.
Riccardo Ferri

One of the finest and highest-performing defenders in Serie A during the 1980s. Ferri was an Inter and Italy stalwart who kept the likes of Vierchowod and Ferrara out of the national team. Formed a key component of perhaps the greatest international defence of all time - Italy's bulletproof World Cup 1990 back-line - which didn't concede a single goal throughout the tournament until deep into the semi-final. Quick and strong, here he is showing Ruud Gullit how to jump
Another fine pick. Has he ever been selected in a draft before? He seems like the forgotten man out of that great generation of Italian defenders.

Yeah, and with 2 Capellos - or should that be Capelli - his pool would be quickly decimated. Munoz and Zagallo were the ones who I was considering. Munoz would have a sensational team from the outset, whereas Zagallo would start with an average team but one which would be unbeatable come the business end of the tournament.

I hadn't thought so but a quick search reveals that @Nani Nana had him in the '60s draft. Looking forward to giving him some overdue credit here.

I regret not picking Munoz tbh, his player pool is incredible.. Didi, Di Stefano, Puskas, Netzer, Santamaria, Gento etc.. Luis Suarez to come?

Chendo

whenever you mention the word "Chendo" to a real Real Madrid fan, I'm pretty sure the first words that'll come to his head are "commitment" and "sacrifice". None of all the other contestants had (or have) that spirit and love for the Team that Chendo irradiated. He's remembered as a pacey SB, not great on attacking roles, but amazing on the cut, and a great marker. His game against Maradona's Napoli, in this season (87-88) proved he was a genius as a marker, leaving Maradona as an average player, as he wasn't able to perform any tricks or runs in that game (notice Maradona was at his prime back then).

He was also restless, in 16 seasons, he appeared in 500 games, for an average of 31,25 games per season!

Chendo stood out for his hard work and commitment. His only professional team was Real Madrid and he also earned 26 caps for Spain. One of his greatest moments for the Whites came in a European Cup game against Napoli in 1987 when he marked Maradona out of the game and even dummied the great Argentinian at one point of a historic game. "It was a great pleasure for me to mark the world number one.""I showed a lot of humility on the field," he said years later. In that tie in which Real Madrid won the Argentine genius in his prime was gone. Chendo was prompt and attentive for 180 minutes and made the great player Maradona look average and even dared to make a nutmeg.

His career at Real Madrid was a long and brilliant one which started in the youth teams. He made his full team debut at 23 in a team trained by Di Stéfano which finished the season as runner-up in La Liga, the Spanish Cup, the Spanish League Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup. In the following season, Chendo won the first of his seven league titles, the Spanish Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Cup. He finished his career in style by winning the European Cup (‘La Séptima’ or the “The Seventh” ).

He spent 16 seasons at the club and retired in 1998 having played hundreds of games for the Whites (no longer at his peak but played 27 games in 1995/96 and 18 the year after.. so not a squad player even at this grand age). In his farewell match, Chendo showed his gratitude: "I’m leaving feeling really happy to have fulfilled the dream of every kid: playing for Real Madrid for years and finishing my career at this great club. What more could you ask for?”

Titles as a Real Madrid player:
7 Ligas (1986,1987,1988,1989,1990,1995,1997)
3 Spanish Cups (1989,1993)
5 Spanish Supercups (1988,1989,1990,1993,1997)
1 Champion League (1998)
2 U.E.F.A. Cups (1985,1986)

Roberto Matosas

In 1961 the 20 year old Roberto Matosas joined the title winning Peñarol side. Alongside the stellar attacking talent, he made himself a name as hard and ruthless defender. Bela Guttmann favoured this tough-minded lad and soon he became his defensive leader. His reputation grew rapidly and after four years he joined River Plate for a record free. He continued his success and proved to be a defensive allrounder, who could trouble even the best forwards. After another brief spell for Peñarol, he emigrated to Mexico, where he ended his career. 26 years after his biggest succes - winning the copa in 1961 - his son would follow his legacy and win the title as well - with Peñarol.

unrelated fun fact: This lovely flower was eventually his biggest () fan. She gained a reputation as enthusiastic supporter of River Plate. In one of the first matches for his new team, Roberto gave her his shirt, the No. 6, which she wore every single match. Since this day everybody called her "La Gorda Matosas". Years later Roberto said without shame, that "La Gorda Matosas was eventually more famous than I was" to highlight the importance of such a loyal and passionate fan during this passed age of football.

He was my first choice until I realised that he left the summer Breitner joined Real Madrid, which really annoyed me, because I needed Breitner in midfield for the team I had in mind.

Yeah I spotted that too, but he still has an insane midfield regardless.

How do you fit all of Kopa, Di Stefano, Puskas, Didi and Netzer in the same team, though? The main issue due to which I didn't go for Munoz was, I couldn't find an ideal CM partner for Pirri and leaving Santamaria aside, there was hardly any top defenders in that side.

It did look a wee bit soft in defence to win it. He did have Camacho at a later date.

That was my problem. I would have gone 2-3-5 and I think with Breitner and Pirri either side of that 3, you could have pulled it off. With Breitner gone it really sucked.

I didn't think Kopa was in Munoz's player pool? but yeah bit light weight defensively.. but who'd get the ball off them. They'd score 10 past you.

Going with Sacchi when someone had alreday gone for Capello and Carlo would have been suicidal.

Hannes was a defender in his professional career for Borussia Mönchengladbach, he joined the club during the Bundesliga Championship and UEFA Cupwinning season of 1975. He was a fan favourite and a crucial player, he went on to collect two more German Bundesliga titles in 1976 and 1977 and the UEFA Cup in 1979. In his years with the club he also helped them toEuropean Cup runners-up in 1977, UEFA Cuprunners-up in 1980 and German Cup runners-up in 1984.

As a sweeper Hannes was renowned for his forward surges and his long distance shots, many resulting in goals. He was also an accomplished header of the ball and his record of 58 goals in 261 games at Borussia Mönchengladbach speaks volumes for Hannes technique.
