Surprise of the season?

Last year there were probably a few candidates for surprise performers of the season (in a positive way). Martial, for example, came with a huge fee and few on here or in the English media knew much about him but he exceeded all expectations.

Rashford also came from obscurity to be one of the standout players for us in the second half of the season. Which players who struggled last season do you think will flourish under Mourinho or which young player to make the step up?

Could see A. Pereira really pushing for a first team place, despite the competition in Mhikitaryan, Rooney and Mata in the AM role. That or really pushing Martial.

So much competition for places, but Pereira's a very exciting talent. You see the praise Januzaj gets from some quarters of the fanbase and I personally think Pereira's easily more talented.

Rooney, surely the only way is up!!
He's in decline.
Unfortunately, when you are in decline (due to age), it is very difficult to reverse the trend.
Rooney may be 30, but his body is like that of a man in his late 30s.
This is probably because he started playing at the highest level, at a very young age.

I think one of LVG's signings. If Schweiny was our best player would that be a surprise?

Or if Rojo/ Darmian turned world class?

Expecting Bailly to flourish in the Prem and if given the game time , Perraria could be in the regular mix if it goes well for him, I'd sooner see him have a pop in the 10 role as a sub instead of Mata. Also think TFM will boss it if he keeps his head right, play the simple stuff and could command it. Good times ahead, Pogba or no Pogba

For us I think Herrera will be unleashed and thrive under Jose

Non United related I think Everton as a whole will be a surprise, Koeman with that squad could be a top 4 fighter Imo.

Player - Pereira, Tuanzebe, and the Schmidfield

Team - As weird as it is since they're the defending champs, Leicester. Wholly expecting them to finish comfortably in the CL places.

Memphis dribbling past some one.

Jones miraculously getting through the season without endangering the life of himself or others.

Ibrahimovic referring to himself in the first person.

I wouldn't say Martial "exceeded" expectations at all. I'd say he just about met the expectations. We paid a massive fee for him.

I'd like to think Rojo, Depay, Pereira and Januzaj will all flourish under Mourinho. But I can't be too sure. Safe to say none of them will be in Mourinho's starting 11 at the beginning so it all depends on if they take their chances when the opportunity arises. Look at Rashford last season, if Martial didn't pull his hamstring in the warmup against Midgetland, we more than likely would have shipped him off to some League 1 side and probably sold him for like 600k. Like we did with the likes of Thorpe, Lawrence, Henriquez, etc. It's madness.

Darmian and Schneiderlin will be much better. They are both good players, but the whole team suffered last season and almost every outfield player was made to look worse than they are IMO.

I don't think Darmian will ever be too prolific in attack but I expect him to go back to being rock solid defensively, as he was for the first 8 games or so. He was especially great in one on ones at the start. Nobody seemed to get past him.

Valencia will be comfortably the best right back in the league next season.

Schneiderlin returning to his Southampton form and being far more effective at breaking up play.

Fosu-Mensah has a breakthrough year, covering both RB and DM in the same way that Fergie brought Jones through.

Pereira to get more games than Januzaj overall.

Pogba to be quietly effective.

ROFL.

Sorry about that, it was such a ludicrous statement it was all I could come up with.

Hopefully the big surprise is how effortlessly we slip back into top team mode again
