That time of year again. Where the BBC ignores online votes and picks who it wants to be SPOTY.

Has to be Murray again for me. What he's achieved this year against who I consider to be the greatest ever tennis player (Djokovic) is absolutely remarkable.

Max Whitlock being the first British gymnast to win a gold medal edges it for me.

Murray for me too, has raised his game again, and probably not too many years left in the tank.

Laura, Skelton, Whitlock, Farah, i'd be happy with either of them winning it.

While Richardson-Walsh has been a stalwart for women's hockey, Maddie Hinch's keeping performance is what will have stood out with the public.

Ultimately, it's a daft, meaningless award. But let's pretend it matters for a moment. How on earth does somebody like Nicola Adams, who was guaranteed a medal having won only one fight, figure ahead of people like Chris Froome or Carl Frampton?

The latter pair are comfortably two of Britain's most successful sportspeople this year.

It doesn't matter who the candidates are, Murray deserves to win by a country mile. So I guess Nick Skelton will win.

No Chris Froome, who's won the most demanding bike race in the world again, but let's stick a showjumper in instead.

Andy Murray has already won it twice, a third would be excessive IMO. Three others have also notched up two SPOTY awards Henry Cooper, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill.

Personally, i think repeat winners of any kind should be avoided if possible.

There are four nominees representing cycling by the way.

Yet no Froome or Wiggins. Surely a reaction to the Team Sky's TUE's controversy?

Wtf is Vardy doing there? If this is for the calendar year then he has only had 3-4 really good games.

Mo will probably win I'd thought. Sir Bradley won in 2012, so maybe it'll switch back to the track for the Olympics folk.

Imagine winning an Olympic medal and the Tour de France and you're not even included, but Jamie fecking Vardy is :wenger: Absolutely ridiculous. He shouldn't win it in an Olympic year but his achievements are up there with all the rest of them.

Has to be.

Murray may be World Number 1 but he only won one major. He also had a 8-2 losing record against Novak for the year. You can be World Number 1 without truly being the best tennis player playing over 12 months. (Not denying he had a great year)

Farah on the other hand beat everyone when it mattered and achieved something that very few Olympians will ever do. He is the first person in history to win at 10k and 5k in back to back Olympics and World Champs.

Their two achievements this year are incomparable in my opinion. Not even close.

Exactomundo. It should be no contest. However being a popularity contest I don't harbour much hope. I think it would be embarrassing the potential winner to pick up the award in the presence of such a great that Mo Farah undoubtedly is.

Think this comes up each year but not many of these have good personalities. Is it even a factor

Never thought of it that way. Makes perfect sense. Nicely done Ninja!

I really don't have a clue about rugby/cricket/most olympic sports etc. so I don't know how he compares to others in those fields...

But Murray has had a fantastic year and deserves any trophy he might get.

Interesting. Never knew about that 2nd definition.
