Anybody here listen to Prog metal? Couple of weeks ago, I found these guys, Tesseract; and they're awesome. And this probably is one of the best songs I've heard. The vocals are brilliant and they go very well with the music. And they're British.

Does Dream Theater fit in this genre? I haven't listened to them extensively but i usually hear good things about them and what i have heard, i've liked.

Dream Theater defined that genre plus they mixed it with a bit of melodic rock. They may be overrated sometimes but in terms of prog metal they've done their deeds like no band before.

They're legends.

There are so many genres in metal it's easy to confuse them even with Europe. No shame in that.

Used to be a fair bit of a fan. Pain of Salvation were my fave band, until I got a bit wearied by their dramatics. Opeth could be considered prog metal at times, I reckon.

Used to be my favourite metal genre when i was younger. TesseracT are quite awesome and if you like this djent style (high-gain, distorted palm-muted guitar sound), you will probably like Meshuggah, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Gojira and Vildhjarta.

Dream Theater were THE prog metal band, but imo their last really good album was A Train Of Thought back in 2003. Some of my favorite bands are Fates Warning, Psychotic Waltz and Watchtower. If mathcore with brutal vocals is considered prog metal, then i'll add Between The Buried and Me and The Dillinger Escape Plan to my list. After all these years my favorite prog metal album is still Promised Land by Queensryche.

Girish, these guys are from your country and they are unbelievable, do you know them?

This thread belongs to Dream Theater. Illumination Theory on their latest album is outstanding.

The range in style within the genre is pretty extensive: Meshuggah, Dream Theatre, Tool and Opeth all fall under the Progressive metal banner but have completely different sounds. Some of my favourite bands from the genre are Meshuggah, Dream Theatre, Tool and Opeth.

Thanks for opening this thread at this time Girish, you took my mind off that gimp David Moyes for a few minutes.

Opeth, Mastodon, Death, Tool, Voivod, heck even Maiden these days. Never heard of that band Girish, will give them a listen.

Right now i'm listening to an unsigned English band, Sanhedrin. ...Of forgotten and stricken souls is a killer track from their EP.

I've never heard of them. But their sound seems very impressive!

For those of you who enjoy the Dream Theater school of prog metal, check out Dreamscape's End of Silence and 5th season. If you are more into the newer wave, such as Tesseract, The Ocean's Pelagial is a must listen.

Very true, The Ocean are simply an amazing band, they've only released great or excellent albums. I still can't understand why Pelagial wasn't on anyone's (metal magazine or website) list with the best metal albums of 2013.

Tool are one of the greatest bands ever, in my opinion, but they're more progressive rock than progressive metal, surely?

@Count Orduck

The Tool wiki page has them genre listed under Alternative Metal, Art Rock, Progressive Metal and Progressive rock. Their sound has been transient but there are always enough metal elements in there for them to be identified as such and they are definitely progressive. Personally if I had to genre label them as anything it would Art Metal, these things are partially subjective though.

Opeth are just absolutely epic, they are like a cross between Pink Floyd and Cradle of Filth - what a concept! I love how they use Paul Reed Smith guitars as they give the sound a much thicker and warmer quality, something that is quite rare in the metal genre.

I struggled to get into Meshuggah at first, their sound just seemed a little lacking in colour. When I heard this track though it blew my mind. It is just so gutteral, aggressive and rhythmically dissonant it sounds like you have been sucked into a black hole and you are listening to the world end.

Interesting video of a classical composer detailing how the music of Meshuggah has changed and is consuming his life.

Opeth and Dream Theater are two of my all time favorite metal bands. Both very different but genius in their way.

Opeth changed a lot over the years. Practically every album stands on its own and is very different from the one before or the next. Akerfeldt is also one of the best vocalists in the world. He has a great grunting voice (or used to have at least) and stunning clear vocals as well.

Blackwater Park is probably my favorite metal album ever. Watershed is completely different, a lot calmer, but great as well.

I could have picked about ten of DT's songs that really define them, but these two are my favorites.

I love a bit of sludgey post-metal, which I suppose stemmed from progressive rock/metal.

ISIS totally crush

As do Pelican. Stone cold grooves

Hard to pin down Jesu as every record is different. Love his straight forward, gloomy, downtuned pop songs, like this

Like everything about that except the vocals. Seem a bit pop punky for me.

New Opeth single is a bit meh, hopefully the album stands up better.

In Absentia by Porcupine Tree is a brilliant record, can't stop listening to it right now.

Someone posted Isis earlier. They're an excellent choice.

You could also try Russian Circles (not really at the radical end of the progressive rock/metal spectrum, but they've got some experimental stuff).

Wrong thread for whoever posted Wolfmother earlier

Still Life is an pinch better imo. Only because The Moor is better than anything on BP.

And if we're talking Tool and Mastodon, then look no further than these beauties:

Newbie @Rick88 suggested thees two bands. Jakob from Newzealand, and Toundra from Spain. They're both instrumental post-rock bands.

If you guys fancy a Black Metal concert then this masterpiece is a must, it is Dimmu Borgir featuring "KORK" which is NRK (Norway's BBC) official orchestra, and our national orchestra. Pretty cool that they make such a massive production with a Black Metal band and a fancy and official orchestra like that. Probably the biggest Black Metal production ever, and most likely the biggest one we will see ever:

 Dimmu Borgir really take production value seriously! Immortal also have a good modern sound. I don't listen to black metal but I like black metal that is more raw and atmospheric. Something like Darkthrone or Burzum.

A question to the thread in general, do any of you like Opeth? They aren't precisely progressive metal. It's like death metal meets prog rock. I love their Damnation album

Found about these guys recently. Really like the first three albums (well, hopefully others too, haven't heard them yet)...Riverside, from Poland.
