CARRICK EXTENDS CONTRACT TO JUNE 2018
Manchester United is delighted to announce that Michael Carrick has extended his contract for a further year to June 2018.

Carrick, 35, signed for United in July 2006. During his time at the club he has won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups, a FIFA Club World Cup, a UEFA Champions League, six FA Community Shields and, of course, the recently-secured UEFA Europa League trophy which will be paraded to the fans at Michael’s upcoming Old Trafford testimonial match on 4 June.

Michael Carrick said:

"What a fantastic way to finish off the season, with a new trophy in our cabinet. I am delighted that my journey with this great club is going to continue.

"My focus now is looking ahead to my testimonial match next Sunday; it will be a very proud moment for me and my family, and is the perfect way to top what has already been a great season. I am thrilled that the fans will also get to see our shiny new Europa League trophy on the day.”

José Mourinho said:

"I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Michael over this past season. He is one of the true professionals of the game. Not only is he a great footballer, he is also a fantastic human being and a great role model to our younger members of the team. I am delighted he has extended his contract and I would like to take this opportunity to wish Michael all the best for his well-deserved testimonial match next Sunday."

Great (tho expected) news!

Always suprises and confuses me that he was underrated for so much of his early United career.

Pretty late on a Saturday to sign a new contract, but I think right decision. He has wisdom to impart on the younger players in our squad and can still feature in games here and there.

Don't have any complains, just hopes this won't affect us getting a new midfielder as he shouldn't play as much as this season.

Happy for him.

Strikes me as a useful 'calm the f*ck down' sub late in matches. But really shouldn't be starting too often, unfortunately.

Past few seasons he's had a mini purple patch amidst mediocrity, but this season he barely looked ready at this level. No surprise given his age and position.

Great servant and gotta pretty close to our best midfielder in the past decade.

Agreed. He'll be fine as back up, starting in the easy games and some cup games too. It's good to keep some of the old guard in the team, especially with rumours of Rooney leaving.

DM sorted for next season. Now bring in Keane, Adama Traore, Defoe and Perisic to get us competitive in the CL again.

Calm and experienced presence in the squad who's won every trophy in the game with us so he's seen it all and done it all, still a very good player when used right and his winning mentality is vital for those that haven't been where he's been so I'm very happy he's now officially signed on for another season.

Fantastic news!! Such a great influence in the dressing room and he is one player I want to see retire here. His experience may be key next season.

Shouldn't start every game but can be a useful player to have.

As long as we are still getting a proper DM in and using him sporadically its not a bad deal, for him mainly. Why not bring him on board as a coach? Would be worth a thought.

Good news. Hopefully we only use him in a 3 man midfield (2 runners with him like herrera and Pogba) and even that its sparingly. (Or sub to close out games).

This. I am happy for him to stay as long as we buy a replacement.

He can still contribute on the pitch but most importantly appears to be a great leader. A lot of players praise him when discussing how they adapted to joining United or to playing 1st team football. That quality isn't appreciated enough, especially with a manager like Jose who struggles to deal with certain characters. Most importantly, Carrick doesn't strike me as somebody who'd ever create an agenda behind the manager's back but rather addresses the problem with the manager himself.

Anyways, great to have him at our club for one more year.

Managers seem to love him. SAF, LVG and now Mourinho. And as we saw after the City game, Pep too. Hugely appreciated within the game (except of course by the string of idiots who managed England over the last decade).

Guess it's better to keep him on for another year until we have definite recruits to bulk up the midfield.

Happy days. Still good enough for 12-15 starts plus a few cameos.
He's not. Maybe a few Champions Leagues or league cups, but he should be last resort any other time of the season.

Good news this, I hope we now sign a youngish player that plays the same position/role. Will be good for him to learn a thing or two from Carrick before he eventually calls it a day.

Weird. He's looked as past it as Rooney recently and even his passing has deteriorated. Thought he'd get a coaching contract not a playing one. So will this mean the U23's will get a different new coach?

Use for cup games, christmas period and (hopefully) a congested run in and we've got one of the most reliable backup options going.

Rooney leaving just makes an even stronger need for Carrick to remain to use the experience to prepare the squad for title challenge next season. Problem with him is just overuse. He can play around 10-15 matches in the cups or something with quite a long rest in between, the multiple fronts will easily offer enough matches to rotate. not sure about the coaching

Not really happy with this, i know he is a good backup option and all but he was very poor last season, this has been our biggest problem since SAF left, players aren't being replaced quickly enough. More concerning is the fact that carrick signing could very well mean not more than 1 mf will be bought, so we will essentially be 1 injury away from playing fellaini in the mf again.
