In theory the talk seems to be Madrid would sell Ronaldo to fund Mbappe. The next galactico!

It might be a moot point as Mbappe seems set on Madrid anyway, but who you prefer?

One for now, maybe 3-5 years absolute max. Or one for up to 15-17 years.

Proven vs as proven potential as it comes these days.

Its a damn tough question. We have Rashford and Martial as young potential stars. Would Mpabbe just become another maybe, but not quite there. If that was the case it would become a very expensive mistake.

Ronaldo is as good as guaranteed quality as it comes, but the shelf life is uncertain, but certainly not more than a few years.

There would be no money back for a huge investment in Ronaldo.

Personally I'm fed up of missing out on the Sanchez, the Aguero, the Hazard, Bale, Robben types of this world.

I say that in theory that's what plenty of our signings should have been, e.g Kagawa, Mhki, Martial, but for some reason they've just not cut it. Mhki/ Martial still have time, but are some way off of the levels expected in terms of consistency.

And I guess the last paragraph is the conundrum. Take 3 trophies now, or gamble for 10?

Madrid just spent £40m on a 16 year old. The next Neymar/ Messi/ Ronaldo are getting gambled on from childhood now.

I could flip a coin and still not be certain on the right choice.

Problem with your logic is that if we do sign Mbappe then he might want to go to Madrid in 3-5 years.

Ronaldo doesn't guarantee any trophies.

And Mmmmbop doesn't guarantee anything either, not even half a season of world beating performances. They both have to play for this particular Manchester United team with its strengths and weaknesses.

So, I'd flip a coin - yes. If I had to.

But in general (disregarding the money) I'd rather see United try to develop the next Ronaldo than buying the old one. That's just a matter of principle, if you will.

You would take Ronaldo rather than Mbappe as:
  • Hes proven he can perform anywhere
  • He wont want to go to Madrid in 3-4 years

The return financially on Ronaldo for United would be huge! Maybe not in terms of resale value but marketing alone, most marketable player on the most marketable club. Plus I wouldn't say Mbappe is as proven as they come. Yes his potential is huge but how many people knew his name at the start of last season? Add to that the price tag on him and the risk is just as high as the reward.

It is utterly ridiculous to compare Mbappe to Cristiano Ronaldo.

In footballing terms Cristiano Ronaldo is easily better than most players to have ever played the game. He hasn't failed to score more than 40 times a season since 2010/11. In the past year he has dragged an average, draw specialist Portugal through the knockouts of the Euros, scored hat-tricks in the European Cup quarters, semis and a brace in the final. He's an animal.

When you think of the great forwards Ronaldo has bettered its an astonishing list. Even in modern times, we're talking about a forward who has outshone the likes of Luiz Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto'o, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Luis Suarez. If Mbappe is extremely talented he will reach the level of the players Ronaldo has surpassed.

You mention Hazard and Robben. Two players that have proved difference makers for title winning teams. If Mbappe can produce as they have he'll have had a great career. Neither is anywhere near Ronaldo's level.

I have no doubt Mbappe will have a great career. I doubt he'll be banging in 50 goals a season though. I doubt we'll see those kind of numbers once Messi and Ronaldo retire from anyone.

One is a potentially world class player. Maybe even once in a generation, good.
The other is the greatest goalscorer of all time and currently the world's most dangerous player.

If we'd already won a couple of league titles (in the last 3/4 years), I'd prefer Mbappe. Considering that we need something special to give us a chance of winning the league, Ronaldo is a no-brainer. Simple decision.

3-5 years is a long time, by then there should be at least a couple of other young players who are just as talented if not more coming up. And if he is wanted by Madrid then he'll probably have led us to a PL and/or CL, which is a good sign.

For United? Cristiano, it's a no brainer really. You need to win now, not 3-4 years from now

As if the two of them are comparable ffs.

Mbappe would be no better than Martial here. Ronaldo is the best player in the world.

I think this is a bit of a fallicy as it's easy to look at other clubs' signings and say we missed out, but it's a handful of players whom every club has missed out on bar the one that signed them.

We got Pogba, that is as big a coup as any of the names listed I think.

Why does this bullshit keep getting quoted ? At the Euro's, he scored the same amount of goals as Nani. Portugal's matches went thus:

1-1 against the mighty Iceland.
0-0 against the even mightier Austria.
3-3 against the unstoppable Hungary, with Ronaldo scoring a brace, the same amount of group stage goals as Nani against a bunch of rubbish teams, scraping through in 3rd place.

Knockout stages
0-1 against Croatia with only an extra time winner from someone who isn't Ronaldo separating the two.
1-1 against Poland, with Ronaldo again not scoring. He did score a penalty like the other 4 players who took one in the shootout.
2-0 against Wales, with Ronaldo scoring a goal, the same as Nani again.
1-0 against France with Ronaldo playing a handful of minutes before going off injured.

So, scored 1 goal in the knockout stages and didn't really feature in the final.

Dragged through, indeed. It's very easy to single out Ronaldo as a media darling because he's one of the best in the world and claim his team's success is down to him when largely it wasn't. He scored 1 goal and a penalty in a shootout in the 4 knockout stage games.

I'd prefer Ronaldo. I think it would be nice for the supporters. He left under a cloud and it wasn't due to the Manchester weather.

You do make a fair point and it did semi cross my mind when I considered it was really only one star at a handful of clubs and we have brought in a lot of players who should have been stars.

Obviously there are pros and cons to both players. I think even though Ronaldo is undoubtably still the best player in the world right now, you cannot ignore his age. Meanwhile Mbappe might not live up to his hype, however whenever I've seen him play he looks unbelievable.

I think the romantic in me would say bring Ronaldo home. But the logical option would be Mbappe out of the two.

But all this is irrelevant anyway because we'll sign neither and probably end up with Morata!

In theory the talk seems to be Madrid would sell Ronaldo to fund Mbappe.

So the theory is that Madrid don't have enough money to buy Mbappe so the have to sell Ronaldo to get him?

Only salty English press can come up with that nonsense.

I understand that your post talks of another topic, so this comment is not aimed at you, but the theory behind it is ridiculous and if Ronaldo walks it will not be because the club needs the money to fund Mbappe signing.

I think it's more fund in the sense of the manager then still having money to do the things he thinks are necessary. When they've signed galaticos it's often with a host of other players joining as well. I don't think they have the same flowing money they used to, i. E. No more government money/ allowances or whatever it is they used to have.

I think u can same the same thing for a RM manager and even that doesn't guarantee survival.
Zidane is a special case and he's won enough already that one season like 2014/15 won't become a problem for him.

You would take Ronaldo rather than Mbappe as:
  • Hes proven he can perform anywhere

So what if Mbappe went to Madrid after 3-4 years? We'd surely make a profit huge enough to reinvest in the latest wonder prospects.

If Atletico had let Greizzman go
If Real let Ronaldo
Heck if Barca let one of MSN go

We all know they will be filled with a WC alternative from elsewhere.

As such we should have confidence in our ouwn squad regeneration. How are we to compete at a level above the Kagawa, Martial, Mkhi levels mentioned in the posts above if we don't bid for WC talent through caution of losing them.

I think this echoes with other professions in modern society. For jobs requiring higher education, people are reluctant to hire 55 year olds because they retire at 65-67, but they are glad to hire a 35 year old, who statistically will only stay at his job for 5-8 years.

The same would apply to Ronaldo vs Mbappe. Buy Ronaldo and you buy arguably the best player in the world right now, and even with a slight decrease in overall ability, he will be top ten player for the next three years unless a career threatening injury appears. With Mbappe, you get a world class talent, but one that would hardly figure on the top 20 best players in the world right now all things considered. In the next 3-5 years, he will probably move into the top ten category, where Ronaldo will still remain. However, when Mbappe reaches that level, you would expect him to move on to Real Madrid, if rumors are true.

From a footballing perspective, Ronaldo makes the most sense. Mbappe might make more financial sense, but he might not.

I would go for Ronaldo every time - you are virtually guaranteed success if you sign him for a few years - you are guaranteed absolutely nothing if you sign Mbappe as it's way too early for anyone to know how he will turn out yet.

I would go for Mbappe every time - you are virtually guaranteed with Ronaldo's decline in few years - you are guaranteed increasing value of Mbappe as he is currently one of the top prospects in World football, which Ronaldo once were.

I want us to sign Ronaldo, but if this was an actual opportunity then it would have to be Mbappe. He's going to be World Class very soon and if we could sign him today for £120m then we should. No question.

For some reason a lot of people think that new Ronaldo's and Messi's will continuously come along. They wont.

I remember when half the half were claiming Hazard was going to be.

Ronaldo offers us 3-4 years of a level that only Messi and him have ever reached in modern football.

Mbappe wouldn't even come close.

Its by no means certain that Ronaldo will still be operating at a higher level than Mbappe in 2 or 3 years time. Age will catch up with him in the end, while younger players will keep getting better. That's not to say young players will reach Ronaldo's peak level, but they might well surpass his actual current level in the not too distant future.

And then of course there's the sell on value. You either get many, many years of service from a fantastic player, or you recoup everything you paid for him and probably more when Real come calling.

As much as I'd love for us to sign Mbappé as he is the futur and as much as I dislike Ronaldo, I'd go for Ronaldo every single day. One is a world class, one of the greats in the game and a guaranteed performer for several years.

Several years? He's already showing decline.
Regardless of his contributions for winning the league and CL, we all know he doesn't have many years left.

Investing in declining value asset? Thats just not good business.
Investing in certain increasing value asset, which the limit of his is still unknown? Thats a MUST BUY investment plus excitement.

People who are leaning towards Ronaldo:
1. Short sighted
2. Don't rate Mbappe as one of the best potential youngsters.
3. Overvaluing Ronaldo's future value.
or all three.

If Ronaldo actually do come, I already see people complaining to offload 'declined' Ronaldo in order to make space for youngsters to come in (Mbappe) and to decrease our wage budget for other star player to come in. This is going to be another Rooney discussion we're having, in 2-3 years.
