Di Marzio wrote earlier that Griezmann was third priority for United and Morata was top priority. I among with others denied the news but in the end that turned out to be correct. I think for United he has been spot on more often than not in the past two years.
I mean that was prophetic! If people don't believe him as a source after that, they've got trust issues.

Has Di Marzio actually ever been wrong on a transfer after he confirms a bid has taken place? The only times i can remember him getting something wrong was when he talked about interest/rumours.

When Di Marzio has confirmed a bid, i've only ever seen those players leave their clubs or the bid is rejected.
When's he missed? Genuine question, I'd like to know which stories he's written that turned out wrong.
The following were Di Marzio stories:

Done deal/very close/"advanced talks": Falcao to City from Monaco, Alves to PSG from Barca, Gaitan to United from Benfica, Sanches to United from Benfica, Aubameyang to City from Dortmund.

United's interest/strong interest in: Benteke, Benatia, Handanovic, Manolas.

He was not necessarily wrong in any of these instances - things change, deals collapse at the last minute etc. and he may well have been accurately reporting each of these situations as they stood at the time, but obviously none of these actually came off. He'll also be fed disinformation and false briefings and agent claptrap just like every other hack out there. Cautious optimism should be the name of the game until this 'bid' is confirmed at the French or English ends by someone reputable...

Agree with that entirely, was just curious about specifics, thanks.

If anyone doesn't trust Di Marzio they may as well stay away from the transfer forum altogether and just visit manutd.com for news.

everclear is a cool band. yeah they still exist.
To me Fabinho is basically a better Fellaini minus the latter's goalscoring ability.

He is faster than Fellaini, without being fast.
He is a better dribbler than Fellaini, without being particulary excellent on the ball.
He is a better passer than Fellaini, without coming close to people like Carrick or Scholes.

He is not world class, and I don't expect him to become world class, but he is better than what we have. So yeah, why not.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
IMO, the matic reporting was probably down to journos getting their hands on the Europa transfer list (easy transfers that add to squad depth). A list no longer needed.

I think Fabinho was always on the CL list, we are only hearing about this now because its "well advanced".
I highly doubt we had an actual Europa transfer list and CL transfer list.

Mourinho would simply have told Woodward what positions he wanted filled and given a list of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and maybe further preference for those roles. It seems likely based on media reporting that Fabinho, Matic and Dier were our three options for the DM role, but we don't know what order of preference they were. Unlike many I would also be quite happy with Matic, but it's Dier that I'm iffy about.

Terrible assessment, IMO. It's not a computer game of stats out of 100. I mean, almost everything you said can be applied to Kante too. What about his defensive awareness, tackling etc? I'd imagine these are the things he's being signed for. Not about 'how good is his shooting? How good is his dribbling?'

Most defensive midfielders would probably be just a bit better than Fellaini at individual attributes like that. If not, they would probably be #10s. It's about how they put their game together that matters.

What the heck  They are nothing alike apart from the fact that both are quite strong.

Busquets is a better Fellaini minus the latter's goalscoring ability.

Great comparison. If you don't mind me summing it up:

Things they have in common:
  • Tall
  • Earn their living playing football
Differences
  • Nationality
  • Everything else

People thought he was talking bs when he said we Morata was our first choice ahead of Griezmann. That was when we all thought Morata to Milan was all but done and we were in for Lukaku

Basically Di Marzio is king and can tell you what you'll be thinking before you even think it

Congratulations! This is officially the most idiotic post of the week

Also, for reference, Fabinho's goal tallies last two seasons: 11, 8. Fellaini's last two: 4, 4. Which is especially impressive considering he's a converted full back.

The worst thing, is people on the net, from Cheshire and beyond often just decide themselves what is credible based on their own opinions. I imagine that when we were first linked to Perisič, most simply said it was 'bollocks' or whatever - based on no actual knowledge, just the fact that they themselves, wouldn't sign Perisič.

When Di Marzio said we were after Morata as a priority, I remember people saying things like 'see, even he isn't credible' or whatever. Based on absolutely nothing.

This whole credibility thing is tedious anyway. The thread forum is completely censored to the point of hardly any tweets, simply because people can't control their emotions if something turns out to be untrue. It's not that deep, we will all know soon enough.

Only thing I would argue with is the fast part. At least without the ball ( have not seen him with it allot due to the tackle and distribute nature of his game)

He seems to be lightening quick with acceleration and fantastic anticipation. The players in France are rapid and for him to even get to those players who had a head start on him let alone wining the tackle to me is very fast. It's like "where the feck did he come from" all of a sudden you lost the ball.

I don't have anything to add to this thread, I've already said I hope we sign him, but I though I'd give you all the opportunity to be the one who grants me my 10th like.

Go on, I'll be your best friend.

Are you watching closely?
Fabinho may not be a great player, but the balance he could bring to our midfield could potentially be of massive value. A midfield three of Fabinho, Herrera and Pogba could compete with the very best - even if Pogba is the only genuine world class player of the three. It would probably give us the best midfield in the league. Really hope this happens.

My 2cents:

Di Marzio is as credible as they come. Obviously has a lot of contacts and gets a lot right therefore has no reason to fabricate stuff and ruin reputation.

Poor information or changing situations means not all stories turn out true though.

I trust what he says but I don't take it as gospel that it will result in a signing.

Fabinho is actually pretty quick. He kept up with sane in a sprint.

Di Marzio has a stellar record when one of the parties involved are Italian, but for the rest he's a bit hit and miss, like everybody else.

I guess that explains where he got his Morata information.

The guy was part of a team that reached the CL semi's beating Man City/Dortmund and won the title in spite of PSG. He is a good player.

Seems to me like juve tried for Fabinho but they've given up, obviously because we won the race. Italian journos have been told this info which is why they know about the bid.

That's exactly what is after happening I reckon.

The lack of talk around it and Fabinho's coy reactions could be explained by that too. We do like to keep things under wraps again after Woodward's initial bravado (which I think was necessary at the time to make us attractive to the top players).

I think the RB reporting was down to Juve looking at him as a RB, yet they have stopped looking because we are well advanced in talks.

From there Di Marzio and co are only reporting we are in talks and submitted a bid, nothing about him being a RB for MUFC
That may be true, but I remember similar wording from Castles last summer saying that Mourinho wanted an elite level RB in Fabinho. Mourinho probably views Fabinho as a CDM, but I also remember reading about how Fabinho prefers the attacking freedom of a full back more than as a CDM.

Unlikely. The Matic reports sound fabricated and Valencia was a mainstay for Mourinho last season.
That may be true, but we have also been linked to Semedo and Aurier to various degrees this season. Those rumours may be fully made up, but If Mourinho wanted a RB, I wouldn't put it past him to look at Fabinho (though Sidibe in Monaco alone is a better RB). On Matic, I think the Times wrote recently that Conte would allow Matic to be sold to United to help the Bakayoko transfer through, so there may be something in the Matic rumours.

Didn't this story start when Di Marzio reported Juve didn't want him anymore because we bid 50m? That could explain how he knows?

Yep, Juve leak info like crazy. We have to remember it was the CdS journo that heard something first/concrete on Fabinho to MUFC not too long ago, then Di Marzio went one step further. Di Marzio likely has the superior contacts thus we then find out there is a bid and talks are advanced.

CdS journo was the first recent journo to put his name to the move in the recent uptick of news. The CdS journo was very adamant that it was done. Di Marzio likely picked it up from Juve contacts and from there he's found out more info like the price and how advanced the talks are.

That's impressive. How many games did he and Fellaini play last season ?
Fabinho is the main penalty taker for Monaco, so the vast majority of those goals are from penalties. Not that, I think the comparison between Fabinho and Fellaini was any good.
