I thought Rooney was the best player on the pitch in the first half. I've never rated Schneiderlin though. I wasn't happy when we signed him. Very happy when we sold him. Now if we can just do something about Herrara...
Thought Herrera had a good game with matic sitting deep and Herrera " ratting " around the pitch we at last gave Pogba the chance to roam upfield and what a difference that made .
Very good performance from all , Lindelof playing out of position was excellent, Jones at last looking liKe a dominant centre half and , Shaw rapidly improving , Mata clever on the ball , lingard united through and through and Pogba sublime .
Great performance

Hmm tbh I didn't like his comments about Scholes much. Could have been said in much nicer way, and no need to start a war with one of the clubs legends. Scholes was stupid in his criticism of Pogba though, tbh as well.
I thought he was spot on. Pogba stepped up and obviously was trying to prove Scholes wrong in utilising his physicality.

Well played Paul. Great management.

Not the first time this has been said. Could be something in it.

He could also be a objective football pundit who doesn't allow silly things like ABUism to cloud his judgement. I'm looking at you Mr Souness (among a great many others)
Think Sourness is especially ABU. I mean, there are some pundits who let their allegiances be known, like Rio or Carragher, but they still manage to be fair. About two weeks ago, can't remember which game, Souness actually said, "its not that I am a dyed in the wool Liverpool supporter who cannae see anything good in a United side. People will say that..." Well, people will, because that is exactly what he is.

Lingard deserves great praise. He’s been sensational this season. 7 pl goals and I wouldn’t be surprised if he finishes with more league goals than Lukaku by seasons end.

And I hope this performance by Martial will give Jose confidence to keep playing him. To be honest he should remain our number 9.

Mourinho shouldn’t blame Scholes, Pogba was poor last game. Scholesy just told the truth Pogba should play his best position on left like he was at Juve. Mourinho did it today and proves it does work. Then why he still blaming Scholes of his honest opinion and advice after he did what Scholes said last game?

Very good performance in the second half. Overall Everton had 0 shots on target so credit to whole team for playing as a team. Second half stepped up the performance and deservedly won the game.

You have to respect Mourinho as a manager. He has done very well during his career.

However, I am getting kinda fed up with his childish behaviour. Why don't you just say that everyone is entitled to an opinion?

I know it's partly frustration, but it's just not very likeable.

I wonder what the players are thinking when he has a post match interview meltdown?

I'll throw in a negative - how do we integrate Lukaku into that style of play?

there's were a few signs at Leicester it might be possible, but doesn't look completely straightforward

I'd look at getting another top top MF man in, & eventually the centre defence needs some serious attention too

but that was much better, :) - to watch if nothing else, :D
I think with Pogba, Lingard, Martial, Shaw all getting into good passing positions in the box this suits Lukaku

do think he will struggle a little with the nice intricate passing at times but with the service he would have gotten tonight I think he would have been licking his lips

the answer is simple really though - work on it in training - because we spent 75 million on Lukaku it doesn't mean he has to start every game though

Pogba's assist for Martial's goal was something else!

Good game, especially in the 2nd half. Pogba was the bollocks but Lingard, Shaw, Martial, Mata and Rojo all had particularly good games too.

I thought this was going to be a nightmare of a game but apart from a 10 minute spell they had in the 2nd half, we were the much better team and looked a lot more fluid without Lukaku IMO.

I can't blame the ex-players much. They'll always be asked about the club and always will have to say their opinion. As pundits they can't just support the club in the media.

But Scholes coming out and saying where is Pogba of Juve and all that was stupid punditry.

I think Jose, however, should have just said that Scholes is free to comment as he likes and he has no comment on him. Would close this point nicely and without much problems. He went OTT in his comments.
I know they're pundits. However sometimes their criticism is over the top. You don't get that from ex players of other clubs. Constructive criticism is fine, but sometimes they make it sound personal - at least to my ears. Therefore I understand how the manager would take exception to that. LVG only said that he wished Scholes would have said what he had to him face to face, especially since at that time Giggs was AM and his friend. He didn't go after him like Jose, but it just shows you how uncomfortable their commentary can be sometimes. They need to be a little more diplomatic, and so does Jose.

I agree

takes the gloss off a win in some ways and he appears petty and reactive - a good manager should for the most part rise above the media comments

the attitude is a sign of weakness for me and his rock n roll comment seemed to suggest that he was back after an awful few weeks of results - maybe wait until we win 4 or 5 in a row before you start congratulating yourself

Seems that the majority were in agreement with what I said about the first half. Pundits and journalists all pretty much said the same.

The first half wasn't enjoyable, the second half was excellent and very enjoyable. Judging who does and doesn't like football based on that I find very harsh.
I suggest you learn a second language and stop watching English broadcasts -- they're shit and are bad for your mental health.

The English broadcasts spend the entire game on everything but the football: what kind of narrative can we take from this game, what talking points can we help generate, and what headlines can we help create. It's shit.

The foreign language broadcasts actually seem to care about the events on the pitch more than the drama of the press. You feel the excitement of build-up play long before the shot is actually taken, unlike many English broadcasts that only recognize a quality opportunity upon watching a slow-motion replay.

The first half was damn entertaining, unless of course your idea of entertaining is only when United have the opposition's box surrounded. It was end-to-end stuff at many points, with last-ditch tackles and defending breaking up otherwise threatening attacking opportunities. It was the same type of performance United gave against Leicester and Burnely, just without the end product: Lingard's shot was just wide of the post, Pickford made a great diving save, etc. The first half was fun.

Have you watched everything Scholes said about Pogba? Most of it was complimentary. The criticism was really how we use him.

That comment from Mourinho is bang out of order.

Martial kissing the badge
I know, that and Lingard smiling and chatting with Mourinho when subbed were both great to see.
What a match, Lingard, Martial, Shaw, Mata - all great, Pogba - in another world.

It was stupid punditry? Funny because Jose played Pogba just as Scholes suggested, in a role that he played at Juventus. And what do we know, it was one of his best performances this season. It's not Scholes but Jose who looks stupid here with his nonsense and petty shots. He is childish and insecure, our manager.

The comments about him not the same Pogba of Juve were very harsh from Paul. I think both Mourinho and Paul are wrong in this case.

Don't want it to turn to a war between both.

That second half was the best we've been in monthsm . We dominated at Goodison.
Which we usually do, especially during the Fergie years. Only recently we have had troubles there.

Really? Not sure how any football fan can come to that conclusion.
Quite simply, we played good football against Bristol and Leicester, just didn’t get the result needed. Today we did.

If you think Mourinho listened to Scholes then changed the formation because of it, you're high.

I wouldn't worry about that. In ten years Scholes will still be a legend. Mourinho might get results here, but he will never enjoy the same status as PS18.
What is that really related to my post ? Everyone knows that Paul will always be of a higher statue here than Mourinho. It's not even a question.

I mean I don't want to say a continuous war between the two for the rest of the season because of this.

Yeah because it should be interpreted in a different way right ?

I'm not really arsed to drag this any farther anyway. Don't want to spoil the enjoyment of the win.

Some good individual performances and some nice bits of team play... some good stuff to build on going forward. We need a mentality now, of finishing as high above the 3rd place team as we can and all but ignore what shitty are doing.

I guess it's not.

I do think some critisism is fair. Mourinho is just a fool if he wants to take any part in it. If he continues to argue with Scholesy throughout the campaign, then that's just ridiculous.

He needs to decide what's important. And an ongoing argument with Scholes certainly isn't.

I think the problem would be that with Lukaku starting, Martial gets moved to the left and then that might just cut off some of the freedom that Pogba enjoyed in this match.

After 20 years service, over 700 appearances, 11 league titles and 2 champion's league wins for the club I think Paul has earned the right to have his say on how things are at the moment and I don't think he was stinging in is criticism the other night, just desperately disappointed to see his team, including Pogba, playing like donkeys.
If Maureen doesn't like it, tough, do what you're paid multi millions for and sort the team out!

According to xG statistics the match was very even 1.24 for Everton and 1.26 for Man Utd.

The defense was slightly poorer and the attack didn't create as many chances.

I hope it's not just luck but I'll wait for more wins before I say that Man Utd is out of danger.
I think xG is a very useful measure, but specifically in certain scenarios. It’s good for telling you whether a side could have expected to score or concede over a large period of time if they failed to do so.

There are a number of weaknesses in xG and one is in assigning a value of 0 xG to any attacks that do not result in a shot. United had a lot of dangerous crosses and passes into the box, which would attract goals long term.

If you cut Lingard and Martial’s goals out of the footage in that match, there’s no doubt United were still the much superior side.

Mariner decided not to whistle fouls against us thus Everton had their little spell. Otherwise the ref was ok today.
Yes, especially that two footed sliding challenge when Pogba had to jump out of the way to avoid being clattered on the 70 minute mark. I was thinking red card, referee waved play on. Mental!

Theres only one Jesper Olsen!!
Thought Rojo was particularly good tonight, he looked shaky last few games but he gives his all.
Shaw looks like he could nail his place back down if he continues like this which made no surprise it was down his side with pogba in front of him we caused most damage.
Thought we looked so much more balanced tonight with Herrera and Matic holding allowing pogba to run the game in their half, great to see more movement and fluidity up top, add a top class pacey and tricky player on the right and we could be in good shape (Bale?)
Not sure Lukaku fits well in this style of team though

xG stats? Everton didn't have a shot on target. We had six plus we hit the woodwork. End of story.

Played well today I thought, first half wasn't great but we grew into the game. Don't remember Everton having a shot on target.

Second half we were by far the better team. Pogba came in to his own. Playing in a midfield three really helps him.

Set up two goals and looked very lively so I am very happy, hopefully Pogba can keep it going.

Another great goal from Lingard (this guy is showing that whilst you may not have the most class, hard work and dedication can take you a long way) still think he has quality as well though.

Martial looked a lot better playing through the middle. I rate him more than Rashford as CF, people may not agree but I would give him a run up top and lets see what he can do.

All in all a good game and performance, I am still behind Jose and after that performance think the players are as well. Have to take it one game at a time and see where we are in a few weeks.

2nd half among our best all season. Mourinho got the team right - and several players lifted their performance a lot.

Pogba should NEVER play in 2 man midfield - let him play with 2 holding players behind him, so he can do what he does best - concentrate on attack. Lingard still our best attacking player, and Shaw should never be sold. He has a long way to go, but he looks better for each game.

Managed to get the second half, thought we were totally outclassing them, just like Leicester. I was waiting for it all to go Pete Tong.... but it didn't, we looked so much more relaxed with some super slick passing. Well done us!
