To Mods, I have put this in united forum as not specific to rumour etc, apologies if wrong place.
I’m wondering if I’m in a minority that does not want significant business done this summer. Our transfer policy in recent years has failed (pre mourinho) and we’ve seen time and again the consequences of reshuffling a team. No matter what we do we always look one player short or hear the complaint that we have the players but something is missing. Anybody that has played football can attest to the problems changing personnel can cause and the benefits of gelling. Buying a bunch of players is not the solution to making the next jump to title challenge and European challenge.
Most of us recognise a huge improvement results wise, the overall quality of squad and hope to see some improvement in playing style.
In my opinion this summer window should be about
The non negotiable: we need a left back and right sided player. I don’t think anybody can argue with this unless Sanchez and martial can be accommodated as wide players playing together. We need to absolutely focus on signing exactly what we need not what happens to present itself.
The maybes: many will argue that we need a right back and another midfielder. If we sort a right sided attacker I think the burden on Valencia to do two jobs at once will lessen and we will struggle to find a more reliable right back and I do think he can offer more going forward with the right person in front of him. In central midfield, I think the Herrera pogba Matic trio should be kept unless there is a clear attainable improvement. We have signed many talented players in recent years and it just hasn’t worked. This three look good together and are not the problem personnel wise, hoping to see pogba more like he was versus city and the first goal against arsenal is more realistic than another signing. Unless...
It’s a top level player. Occasionally you see a situation for whatever reason somebody from the very top tier is available in the position we need them (eg van persie) in the case that one of those players is available then yes we should go for it and upgrade on possibly Herrera. Eg Kroos, verratti...
The replacements We will lose players. Carrick darmian blind for example are certain to leave. These should be replaced in the squad ideally with a combination of promoted youth (mctominay, pereira?) and sensible signings of players accepting of their role. Situations like martial where unrest can occur are unnecessary problems and younger players or players of the right profile to evolve and replace others who leave in next 2-3 years should be the aim. A good example might be sessegnon who in my opinion is too young to be a premier league starter regularly but could be a fantastic addition that grows into the team and replaces somebody in our left hand side when time is right.
All in all, our points total will reflect that we have a foundation. I trust mourinho to build on it again, until he appears to be stagnating we have no reason to doubt this. I hope we avoid splurging on players and dismantling areas that have potential to improve well together, eg our middle three.
For my money I hope to only see two essential signings and possibly a couple of squad recruits based on whoever leaves. Maybe three total plus the promotion of two youth players to senior squad status.
Anybody else feel the same or still hoping to go full transfer muppet?
