Biggest World Cup heartbreaks

B7az1l is the obvious choice I guess and personally losing to Italy in 2006 was also pretty sad, then again most people were happy to have made it that far.

What Suarez did was cheating. The goal should've been awarded regardless. It was deliberate cheating. There was no need for the penalty in the first place.

I cheer for different countries every world cup so it's hard to pick one.

Supported England in 2002, that Ronaldinho goal was very heart breaking, so was Robben's miss in 2010 finals.

The ball didn't go in, it has to be penalty.

What he did was natural, everyone would do it. It's easy to judge it from the outside, but being there you just want your team not to loose and you don't even think what's morally correct.

I don't support the hand of Maradona for example, since it was in an attacking situation, but that defensive hand by suarez is what anyone would do in desperation.

After all, if the other player sends the penalty out of the goal is not Suarez's fault.

On the list of shit things Suarez does that was pretty low down. Also wasn't the free a dive and there was an offside in the build up.

:wenger:

England Argentina in 1998.

1. Beckham getting sent off for a pussy like reaction. If he'd have decked Simeone i wouldn't have minded so much.

2. Sol Campbells goal being ruled offside.

This.

We had a strong team that year, there was every chance we could have gone on to win it.

Becks' reaction was pathetic and it ultimately cost us the game, but people burning efegies of him in the street was a little over the top.

Probably Ronaldo in the 98 Final. He was my favourite player and to see him in that final, in what should have been a crowning moment for him, was sad.

Agreed, even as a teenager i thought that was OTT. I was annoyed at the feebleness of his reaction though. I didn't mind as much when Rooney stamped on Carvalho's nuts. At least he must have hurt him.

I'll never forget Ghana in 2010, we almost made history in the first WC held in Africa.

Honestly, feck Suarez for life.

This was also a very annoying moment. Gyan should have buried that penalty though, should have buried it right down donkey teeths throat.

Yeah he should have headbutted him (twice if need be) at least he could have walked away with some street cred to his name, rather than looking like a complete pussy with that sad little kick out AND getting sent off.

Can't really blame Gyan tbh, i'm sure his emotional state was all over the place.

:lol::lol:

Throw the rules in the dustbin. Give all handballs as goals, if the ball was travelling towards the goal post.

Spain vs South Korea 2002..being robbed that way was so frustrating.

Of course you can blame him, he missed a decisive penalty. Should've let someone else take it if he was all over the place.

Fair do's for still taking and scoring a penalty in the shootout though.

Probably the whole Suarez handball incident. I can't fathom how shite Gyan's summer must have been.
This was the first thing that came to mind for me as well.

I don't think cheating like that is what "anyone" would do. Suarez does/did more things out of "desperation" than the average person. He blamed his biting on desperation or something like that.

This. Gyan and Ghana got a fair shot to win it and they screwed up. Got no one else to blame.
Suarez played against the rules and got sent off. And Ghana were given a penalty. It doesn't get fairer than this.

I never got the fuss over the Suarez handball. The only thing that stuck in the craw was his celebration. He committed a foul and got sent off, end of story.
I remember solskjaer hacking down a Liverpool player who was through one on one in an fa cup game and people thought that was a good move.
Suarez was no different to that.

I find all the outrage at Suarez for his handball quite a little bit over the top, to be honest, especially people saying he didn't even show remorse afterwards. He didn't have to, he had just given his nation another shot at getting to the semis. A penalty was awarded, it wasn't his fault Gyan missed it. The miss actually vindicated his gesture a little bit.

I was extremely gutted at the time but retrospectively, I think (almost) anyone in the same position would have done exactly the same thing Suarez did. He was expelled, would miss the following match if they qualified and the game was still tied so Ghana could still win it. Not sure we would have the same level of outrage if Fellaini did something similar for United during a tough CL quarter-final game and we went on to win.

Neymars injury in the last one and of course the 7-1 that followed..

I'm not sure if everyone thought Solskjær's tactical foul was a good move. I think people took a sympathetic view because he was everyone's darling. As opposed to being a piece of shit like Suarez.

This. It was sad to see Neymar not be able to play. He played previous matches in pain and was constantly being targetted. And then 7-1 happened.
It was ridiculous.

Exactly. Suarez is being called a cheat because people hate him for various reasons.

Just had a search around on the internet for that foul and appears it was against Newcastle in 1998. Seems my memory was a little off. I remember Ferguson not being happy with him, but 75,000 other people in the ground were pretty happy he did it.

In response to the greatest Worldcup memories thread, what are your most heartbreaking WC memories?

For me, Wilmots’ disallowed goal against Brazil in the Round of 16 WC 2002. I was also gutted when Lampard’s goal wasn’t given against Germany.

Without being emotionally invested, Gyan and Ghana in the quarter-finals against Uruguay springs to mind, I really felt for them at the time.
Yeah, england germany in 2010. Broke my sons heart. That team and manager should be ashamed of putting in such a gutless performance.

Argentina in 98 too, not so much beckham going off but more campbells goal being disallowed for no reason whatsoever.

I'm obviously too young to have experienced it, but the World Cup in Mexico in 1986 will always be remembered for one particular pass from former red Jesper Olsen in Denmark. He basically gifted Spain an open goal (I can't link to the video because of the limitations of a newbie on this forum).

It was the most exciting Danish national team ever. They played some beautiful football and even though it was the first time Denmark was part of a World Cup, we won our group and was up 1-0 against Spain in the Round of 16 when this happened. Spain went on to win the match 5-1.

1998 - Beckham's red card
2002 - Seaman's mistake
2006 - Rooney's red card and Ronaldo getting all the heat
2010 - Lampard's goal which did not count
2014 - Gerrard's mistakes which allow Suarez to score twice.

Chile elimination against Brazil in 2014 round of 16th. Such an emotive match. Medel playing injured till 120th minute. Pinillas cross bar effort in the 115th minute. We were so close to making history, sending off not other host nation that brazil themselves. Our best team ever and i dont think well ever have a NT again capable of winning back to back Copas America.

Obviously for us thats probably the most sad WC moment recently

I enjoyed so much the 7-1 he he he

England V Argentina

At the time, the amount of abuse Suárez got after the Ghana game, like anybody would have let that go in and get KO of the World Cup, Show me someone who would and I will show you a liar. Not his fault Gyan bottled the penalty

Thank you for saying this. What he did was within the realm of rules. He got sent off and had a penalty kick against his team. It's no different than pushing the player who's going to shoot with nothing but the keeper to beat. It happens all the time and it's not considered cheating. It only had so much repercussion because it was the last play and it ended up being decisive. And also because it's Suarez. But ANY player in his position would have done that, maybe bar some puritan English paladin.

1. Brazil self destruction vs Netherlands in 2010 after playing so well in the first half !
2. Urugay vs Ghana 2010
