The ITV commentary team during I think it was Croatia's first knockout game were talking about the weight of expectation on the team from the country, how the media expect them to reach the final seeing as they were in the easy party of the draw. Is that not true?

Not really. Our media are like our players. Have faith that we can win, happy with semis but all have huge respect for england. It is general opinion how england is strong, young, powerful. How kane is a beast, etc...
Exactly the same like your players are thinking about us. Respect opponent but have faith in your own abilities. Only english media and pundits are arrogant and underestimate us.

Like how its a good well rounded post, till the end when you can't resist more digs  give it a rest you lot. Didn't realise Croatia had such good access to ALL our punditry.

No. Especially not all the media. It's more like we have a good generation capable of big things but nobody thought we should stroll to the final. Being in the semis is already a huge success for such a small country. I can tell you no pundit has said anything like England is not very good, Sterling and Alli are nothing special and they got nothing to be afraid of.

This will be surprisingly easy for England. This Croatia team have had back-to-back 120mins plus the nerve-shattering effects of two shootouts in a row. They aren't going to be in good nick, shall we say. Plus, theye looked reasonably rubbish in those two games as well. England will cruise to a comfortable win, but I dont see them winning the final.
They would play better against a better team though I think. Denmark and Russia are two horrible opponents who were both playing for penalties and Croatia were unlucky not to win both in 120mins. Still, they did look poor at times against Russia and were shocking against Denmark. It’s hard to tell how they will play against England but I imagine a lot better than the last 2 games.

It was just a genuine question, to see the other side, seeing as it's just our media constantly being shit on.
I certainly don't think all of your media is arrogant or anything. Yesterday I read a nice article about Rakitić from Sid Lowe in Guardian. But the again some tend to be a bit OTT but media is like that all over the world.

What dig? Shearer, sun, mcmanaman, daily mail....our press quoted their opinion about us. And when they all say " nothing to fear", what do you expect from me to think?
Not saying that all press is like that. I read bbc's( lawrenson) and guardian's preview of our game. That was objective with of course, faith that england( their team) will win. It is how true journalism should be.
Personally i don't mind about press but when pundits so ex players or coaches underestimate other team, that is not nice.

Officially the best poker player on RAWK.
Cheeky.

And arrogant. ;)
;)

Jesting aside, I just hope it's a good game to watch and both teams do us proud.

They'd rather do the talking on the pitch than in the media, something completely opposite to what England have done historically.
Blah blah blah.

This is pretty much it. A lot of our media do go over the top and we do have fans that do it too, embarrasingly enough, so some criticism is fair.

But people bang on about as if their media are any different, as if they don't hype it all up to sell their rags or attract the viewers.

This world cup has been the most passive one I can remember for hype and expectations, part of the reason we are doing so well. But small minded people just love to bang on about our past behaviour and jump all over a few journos getting all giddy as if it's everyone and we are back to our old tricks.

On the other hand, we should be proud of our teams getring this far and being a little optimistic about our chances. I'm trying to be myself even though I think Croatia should be the favourites.

We were not poor. We had control in both games. Denmark were better in second half but in first we had 3,4 clear chances. We missed penalty in OT. Russia defended nearly whole game so it is not easy to create chances against those two. Denmark played 0.0 with france. Russia beat spain. They are both good teams so of course they will have some good periods against any team.
People have wrong opinion about croatia style. We have super midfield but we are not spain. We don't play on possession. We play on quick transition and that is why we always look good against teams who play football like england, spain, italy, argentina.

Slightly seperate note, but on Football Weekly and the Totally Football Show podcasts they've mentioned that some supporters actively wanted Croatia to lose prior to the tournament (may have changed their tune now) but related to that Modric (and someone else who I can't remember) legal case. I don't remember the full details, but something about purgery and corruption.

How significant has that stuff been prior to the WC and now?

@Redlambs, it will certainly be a good game. :) our team wasn't without criticism before the tournament based on friendlies and not many thought we will go so far. Not to mention Modrić and Lovren court cases so country is if not divided there are some who don't care about the team or actively root against it. But that's for some other day and thread.
Now we're here we dare to dream.(RAWK stuff I know :D)

Can only speak for myself but getting fed up with anti-England vitriol dressed up as objective analysis. Anyone we beat is automatically shit, yet before the game they will apparently be our undoing.

We're boring to watch, got no talent, useless English players with no technical ability like Lingard etc etc etc. "It's coming home" = disgusting arrogance from Brexiter little Englanders. The national anthem.

At best it's complete revisionism and at worst just comes across as nothing more than a bit of petty racism. It's definitely not 'objective neutral analysis'.

A lot of us fans have witnessed the most heinous of international tournament campaigns, we have stunk out tournaments with dire football and negativity.

This campaign is clearly different. The team has been impressive and is in the semi-finals now, on the back of some very good performances, albeit with a favourable draw. If it was Germany, no i wouldn't want them to win, but credit where it's due I'm not gonna start going on their domestic club's fan forums and start trolling them, basically insinuating that they're shit after they keep winning.

If someone does that, then in my opinion, they're basically a complete and utter cnut.

Perhaps don't call other posters snowflakes off the back of one post when you have this rubbish in your canon.

Bit of world cup success and the heat can go to an Englishman's head that's for certain.

Are we going to have a spat across multiple threads now?

Not watching this in a public place, not worth the hassle. It will be absolute chaos whether we win or lose, with the latter being marginally worse. The bickering and in fighting has already started but most reasonable fans just want to enjoy the ride, with no idea what will happen.

Biggest game I will have watched in my life (was too young to remember 1999) and honestly think England will never get a better chance to reach a WC final.

Excited for the game and even if we lose I hope Croatia win it all as this is last chance for their generation really.

I’m sorry against Denmark Croatia were rubbish. Slow, lethargic and spineless. Against Russia they were a lot better.

So glad there is a game on tonight to take my mind off of this. Just to reach a world cup final would be an absolute dream, and I can only imagine how mental that day would be

If you beat us tomorrow night, then I'd be rooting for Croatia in the final.

Had them as dark horses for the tournament from the beginning, though I did think they were playing below their level particularly in the Denmark game.

Of course that's all irrelevant what with it coming home and all.

Hope we'll turn up tomorrow. :)

With all this coming home stuff if in the end it doesnt come I reckon English fans will take all the jokes about it not coming home on the chin? :)

Well, it's not like we're gonna get a choice about it . It's a phrase even at this point noone should take with too much seriousness. Everything still totally up for grabs by all teams in the competition. Feels ridiculous even pointing that out tbh.

Whichever station Bilic is working for discussed the Croatian media fairly heavily during their first group game. The conclusion was that there was an expectation to perform and do themselves proud (which I think they've done) as this is considered something of a golden generation and with Modric advancing in years, perhaps the last chance for them to make an impact.
