Looking like a big season for him. I'm optimistic about this one.

Midfield is the weakest part of their squad by far. In the world cup they had Paulinho and Renato Augusto getting minutes, not exactly world beaters I would say. Fernandinho was very bad also when he had to come in. They have two top quality midfielders in Coutinho and Casemiro, but the other spots should be up for grabs.
A midfield with Arthur-Casemiro-Fred is very good, in theory.

I believe Arthur and Fred are probably ahead of Pereira. Maybe Fabinho if he prove himself in the PL. I dont think Tite is calling Pereira as DM.

I assume Tite is trying to avoid anotherThiago Alcantara/Diego Costa/Jorginho situation.

Pretty crazy he got called up after 1 competitive game for us this season, I guess it's just an "insurance" call up. Still, hope it motivates him to keep working hard so that one day he might be able to start for a team as good as Brazil.

It is. But it does show he's pretty highly rated over there, too.

Good point, hope he can get some game time in the friendlies, the more football he plays the better.

Is there a reason why England as a footballing nation has very few 'foreign' players ever being called up?
Sure there is nothing to be done now - however plenty players play in the EPL to never be called up or consider the English national team whilst nations like germany and france have plenty

Probably have something to do with English people not being travellers since the days of procuring colonies. Most Brits couldn't point France out on a map..

Couldn't agree more on almost every single point here lol.

I genuinely have no reason to actually think Matic can't improve. But some how, many united fans already assume he is giving his best, and that its already good enough. Thats just not even remotely true. He plays in a role and tries to model after Carrick, but he takes far too many touches, and time, before he ever thinks of a risky pass. now at that place, a risky pass doesn't have to be a creative pass. but risk is still a risk. If you can't take it playing DM, you running around like a horse trying to break the play of others, will just not be enough. We have already some how decided Herrera is not good enough to partner Pogba in longer run, and yet we are OK to think Matic is as good as he can be. How can we be so stupid and also think we the fans know everything about what is wrong about United. This Matic debacle alone makes me feel very very disillusioned.
I definately dont think Matic is undroppable but I do think we are pretty much seeing his best. He is a player that reads the game very well and shields the ball very well and does a good job at doing so, but is pretty limited.
Personally wasnt that excited when we signed him, thought meh he will do a job, which is pretty much what he has done, but tbh has done it better than I thought he would and was certainly one of our better players last season.
Ceretainly offers more defensively as things stand than Pereira and the way we defend deep that is quite important. Saying that we have to remember Pereira is very very early in terms of development in that position, so can only improve in that respect. I hope he gets games in the role and also other central midfield positions, always thought he is a big talent, hope it isnt just a flurry of early games due to injuries he gets the chance to prove it

Yes think youre right. Was weird world cup Brazil being so average in central midfield and surprised Fernandhino didnt play more. Think there are certainly opportunities for some of the younger central midfield Brazilians to claim a place in that side and Pereira is one of quite a few exciting ones on the ball coming through

Surely the pure amount of footballers in the UK currently should make some players want to play for England?

I dont see why Germany have turkish players like Ozil for example, whilst England continues to not have any. I think its a problem of the FA.

England has Sterling who was born in Jamaica, and the canuck Hargreaves a while back.

Rose, Walker, Lingard, Rashford, RLC and a bunch of others are descendants from other countries as well.

Ozil is not some kind of foreign import who just played for Germany cause he was in Bundesliga. He was born in Germany, his family already lived for quite some time in Gelsenkirchen. His grandfather emigrated to Germany. He came up through the youth ranks of Schalke 04 and never played for a foreign club at youth level. Not at all comparable to Andreas Pereira, heck he is more German than Sterling is English.

They do know how to use ellipsis properly, though.

Wait wait. So he's actually been called up? Seen the reports but then also claims here that it wasn't true?

Probably true since he himself tweeted it.

"An honour that I can't put into words(measure), a happiness which explodes in my heart, a dream that came true today! Thank you my god! Brazilian with pride and love."

Fair to say he probably never wanted to play for Belgium.

He's Brazilian. This makes me so happy that he's happy! Hopefully this drives him on for our club as well.

I think you are confusing Brits with Americans. all of my friends know where France is, even Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.

It might be surprising for some that he's been called up but when we signed Pereira he was regarded as one of the best in the world for his age. He had 10 goals in 9 games from midfield for Belgium at u16 level.

With Martinez and Belgium sniffing about Brazil will have been conscious that they might end up regretting not calling him in a couple of years time.

That's great for him. I imagine Brazil's midfield going forward will be something like Casemiro, Arthur, Coutinho, but it's nice to see he's been given a chance to show his stuff.

It was quite obvious from his statements prior.

Good for him, hope he gets to play and gets his chance. He has the makings of a top CM if he keeps working and improving. He just needs to keep doing that.

Özil is born in Germany. If you think that way then Welbeck is Ghanaian, Kane is Irish...but they're all born in England which makes them English.

Barnes, Sterling, Hargreaves, Butcher, Le Saux and Le Tissier, in my time. I'd say it was a issue with English managers generally only looking at the domestic league for players, or players who don't live here not wanting to represent England.
Living in Australia, I'd say a lot of our players could play for England, but they're never going to get spotted and are far more likely to want to represent Australia. Even if we're never winning anything and 'soccer' here is a second class sport.

Great for the lad that he's talent is being recognised and hopefully he'll cement a position in the team in the future.....

I still think that once Matic is fit and ready to play, Perreira will be back on the bench.

If he gets around 20 starts + a further 15 or so sub appearances across all competitions, that would be an excellent outcome for him. I can see Jose favoring Matic in away games when you expect younger players to make mistakes but his test is going to come when he is expected to hold the same level in a league cup 5th round game away to some championship side when we play with our second choice midfield like Fellaini and Herrera as he does in a premier league game at Old Trafford.

Shouldn't be a problem - the season is long and there'll be plenty of games to go around (for Herrera and Fellaini also).

Matic is still one of the top 6 DMs in world football in my opinion. He was the least of our problems last season. What he lacks in pace, he has in footballing intelligence, poise, leadership and experience.
