He played as many games at the World Cup as anyone and then Mourinho asked him to cut short his vacation and come back early. It was a terrible idea and the lack of sharpness we're seeing to start the season is proof of that.
I'm sorry, but that's not a valid excuse. His finishing let the team down and he knows it, especially tonight. Yes, he's not sharp but clinical he has not been when as a striker of his quality, he must be putting those away, at least the one tonight. This was a clear, first half chance, not an 80th minute chance where I can understand he's on fumes.

Two chances he missed vs Brighton and Spurs are from the oppositions mistakes, as opposed to creating them for him. To me, that's worrying. That said, he should be scoring them.

The plan was for Martial to be the 9 whilst Lukaku was eased back in but he decided to go AWOL...

Yes, he should have scored. The reactions are completely over the top, though.

Rom scored 27 goals in his first season with us. Zlatan scored only one more in his season, Van Persie only three more in his best season, Rooney only scored more goals twice in 13 seasons, so on and so forth. Two misses in two games and half this site have decided he's shit and half of them are the ones baying for Mourinho to be given more time despite his persistent failures. Strikers will always miss chances, but it's obviously going to be magnified when you're set up to play in a team with ZERO other attackers. He needs support and he doesn't get it too often.

He's shown he can and will score goals. Two bad moments do not define him.

If he scored that, we would have won, simple as. However I know he’s rusty and I know he will only get better fine tuned and will fight to be better. So I’m not worried there.

Kane is a player like Kane though. He's the most player like Kane there is, and he hasn't helped his team win a single trophy.
Aguero is also a player like Kane though and he has

And played him in Midfield or got rid very, very quickly!
I suppose he'd also sit on the bench behind Bellion? Saha? Owen? Macheda? Diouf? Welbeck? Berbatov? The argument was that he wouldn't be 4th or 5th choice in ANY of Fergie's teams, which was a crock of shite.

Don't think he's good enough to be first choice CF for a top club. I never have confidence in him finishing. Try him on the right.

Under a different manager, I think he'd be playing on the right and definitely not be an undroppable/first name on the team sheet striker.
I know we dont have a RW, but do you seriously want him playing out there?

I could score a fecking open net chance, but Rom's still a better player than any of them. De Gea's gaffs at the World Cup certainly didn't turn this forum against him. In fact, loads celebrated it as it'd ward off Madrid. Every player makes mistakes, even when they're the best in the world at their position. Writing them off for it only makes you look like a dick.

I like Lukaku but he lost us the game tonight. He had two huge chances and had to take them. The one after Kane's goal was just as important.

Didn’t think he was good enough when we signed him, but he won me over with his attitude last year. Not the best start to the season here though. Hopefully his season will start at Burnley.

Agree, people are OTT, especially when the team loses. But it's unacceptable. He presented himself the opportunity after a horrific backpass by Rose and didn't punish them for it. Gotta be ruthless and your team is counting on you as the primary striker.

26 of them were in the league though. That what it matters.

Neither Martial nor Rashford ever gets a start up front unless it's an emergency. Mourinho should give them a go.
Maybe. I may be in the minority, but I don’t think either one has ever really convinced in that role (albeit with limited opportunity, I concede). Sir Alex always had a mature striker in the squad for a reason. People like to rip Jose for wanting experienced players, but I completely understand why he does. With maturity comes consistency and reliability. They also bring calmness to the younger players in the team and help bring the best out of them. Lukaku is our senior striker and he’s arguably not even in his peak years yet. There are exceptions, of course, but we would benefit greatly from an experienced back up striker, in my opinion.

Agree with the OP.

I remember the start of 2012-13. We were atrocious. Anyone remember Southampton away? Southampton were far better but Van Persie won us the game by scoring with basically every shot he had.

2012-13 Van Persie puts us 1-0 up at Brighton and tonight, totally different games as a result. That’s the level you need to be at to play centre forward for Man Utd.
We've got inferior players, either in terms of attitude and ability compared to the days of Fergie.

Little wonder that we're shite and losing 0-3 to the likes of Spurs.

Am I crazy or should he be used more as a right winger? Roberto Martinez deployed him there to great effect against Brazil and whilst he was at Everton. He would have absolutely demolished Rose in the air, and barring that if Vertonghen moves wide to counter there's now a huge gap in the back line.

I don't think he's ever been as comfortable with his back to goal centrally as he is when cutting in from the right wing onto his left foot, but perhaps I'm wrong here. I'd argue that a Martial/Sanchez - Rashford - Lukaku front 3 is a better deployment of the 3 & addresses United's gaping chasm on the right wing.

Lukaku for me is a good not great striker, but I think if you give Kane that opening chance he scores, seems good with either foot ole Arry. Id still take Redrom over Morata.

Totally agreed with this thread . Lukaku needs to stop acting like a cheerleader and needs to start performing as a proper striker . His misses are shocking for a striker . He keeps missing sitters and then starts either clapping or showing thumbs up after every miss instead of converting those important chances . He could have easily had a hattrick last night even before spurs made a proper attempt on target against us .It's very frustrating for the fans and its something he needs to work on .

He's never been a clinical finisher. That's why you can't rely on having Lukaku up front if you want to win anything. Unfortunately he's the best we can get these days.

SAF always identified that a world class striker and a rock solid defence was the simplest winning formula. We would moan about midfield being neglected but actually he knew what he was doing (no surprise there) and always made sure we were sorted in those areas. Rio, Vidic, VDS, RVN, RVP, Ronaldo, Rooney. Lukaku is a decent player but not at that level which we need if we want to truly succeed.

That wasn't an easy chance. The team can't play. It's not one man up front.
The team played well in the first half. Lukaku had that easy chance, plus two or three moderate chances. He should be on two or three goals this season already and it's hurting the team (because we're unable to keep a clean sheet).

I do agree with you though that other players also need to be chipping in.

Wouldn't go as far as to pin the blame on one player. We pressed them hard in the 1st half and yes if he'd taken that 1st chance it could have been a different story. Having said that we were lacking quality in other departments to have had a comfortable lead going in to the break. Not having that lead was a bad omen and I knew they'd batter us in the 2nd half and expose our weak defence and mf.

He's already on two goals. Additional perhaps. The Leicester and Brighton chances I agree. But he can't be the only one.

[QUOTE="Woziak, post: 23005470, member: 112986"Had we kept Wilfred Zaha, Chiquarito, D Wellbeck, M Keane, J Evans, Raphiel, D Blind, - All sold for pittance of about £50M and not bought M Darmian, M Rojo, V Linderlof, E Bailly, J Mata, Angel Di Maria, Falcao, M Schnederlain, B Schweinsteiger, M Feillani -265M (None of which improved the club!)
We would have £215M more available, a much younger squad, and the funds to buy 2 Elite Centre Backs, 1 more Elite Centre forward so we would have options and some genuine wide quality. We are a blunt instrument, predictable in our setup, predictable in our substitutes, predictable in our formation. Players need to earn the shirt or jog on, Woodward needs to lay the law down, after all he gave Pogba, Lukaku and Sanchez a combined salary of over 1 million pounds per week, currently not to turn up [/QUOTE]
Those players were sold "for pittance" because they had a year left on their contracts in most cases and all wanted to leave to play first team football.

Throwing in a player that didn't work out as some kind of argument just doesn't work. Di Maria what at the top of his game, was bought as such and just didn't perform. He didn't adjust to the city or team, his family didn't, he was unhappy and therefor played badly. Schweinsteiger and Falcao were free punts. One was finished as a player and the other came to us too soon into his recovery. The kind of injury he had takes usually about a year to recover from and I mean a year of which he's fit which he wasn't for all his time here. He managed to perform for Monaco because he recovered whilst with us and Chelsea.

How are players supposed to "earn the shirt"? You say that like Mata, Di Maria, Falcao and Schweinsteiger weren't great at other clubs. Are we just going to stop buying young players?

People were saying this guy should be captain in the summer.
I don’t know the stats, but for some reason he feels like a stat padder. Not opening the scoring or scoring the winners as much as you’d expect from a lead UTD striker. No point mentioning how many goals he has compared to RVP and Ibra if the majority are 3rd goals in a 3 win.

Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. But I'd much rather see this Lukaku who gets a bunch of chances and miss them than Lukaku who got feck all service last year and managed a goal off the absolute old rope we serve him up and he spun into gold.

I tell you what, I'll get a chalkboard out and you can write on it "How many times has Lukaku cost us the game" and then put a big fat "1" underneath and we can go from there. I want to see a full season if this improved transitional play and fast ball movement with proper wide players before I'm going to start getting an itchy trigger finger.

His finishing is poor but I think we need to find a strike partner for him. He doesn't seem to have the quality to be the fulcrum of our attacks. Why not move Sanchez from the wings and play him up front with Lukaku ?

The thing that annoys me is that Lukaku's best performance in the last year has come in a Belgium shirt.

In fact, I don't think Lukaku has had a game for us that has been as good as his best performances for Everton.

Didn't rate him at Chelsea, wba or Everton and certainly don't rate him at utd. I doubt nothing will. Change my mind and how he missed an open net last night was beyond me, any paid footballer should have no excuses for missing. He cost us the game last night

I'm a big fan of his and don't really like singling players out but for me tonight's game had two huge moments and he didn't deliver; the chance in the first half before half time and the chance saved by Lloris immediately after Kane's header.

I think if he had scored either one of those we would have gone on to win quite comfortably. Even if he just took the chance at 0-1 the instant response would have floored Spurs.

You don't get many clear cut opportunities in the games and you certainly can't miss a few of them when you do.
How many did Lukaku score last season? How many before that? Lukaku just return from vacation and obviously being rushed back to duty, obviously he is unfit, or at least not to his 100%.

The real question is, what happen to our other attackers who were watching WC on TV. They are supposed to be fully fit and ready for the season, so should have been 1st choice until Sep. Sanchez, Mata, Martial. All were benched or dropped. Don't blame Lukaku, blame Mourinho. And don't start a Mourinho bashing thread here because of this.
