The opposite of the lowest points for great players thread, which I am enjoying very much.

Let us start off with the obligatory Kiko Macheda video:

And he went on to also score the winner at Sunderland a week later.

A recent example is Milan Pavkov, a striker mediocre even by Red Star Belgrade's current modest standards, scoring a brace against Liverpool, including this worldie:

Darron Gibson with an absolute worldie against Bayern in the CL quarter final. And scoring against Neuer (Schalke) in a CL semi.

Jack Wilshere against Barcelona. Its sad, cuz I think he had the talent to become world class, but injuries ruined him. So does he count as mediocre?

For some reason Neil Mellor hitting one from range against Arsenal springs to mind. No idea why, just did.

Wow! I presume from the reactions of Benfica players and manager that it was a direct clash between them and Porto for the title?
Yes.

Porto had players like Otamendi, Alex Sandro, Fernando, Moutinho, James Rodriguez, Jackson Martinez and Lucho Gonzalez on the pitch but it was Kelvin who won them the title. Did nothing else for the rest of his Porto career.

Fabio Grosso

- scores the winning goal against Germany in the semifinal
- scores the winning penalty against France in the final

At club level he was mediocre.

Probably harsh to call him mediocre but there was one Utd vs Arsenal game at Old Trafford where Phil Neville absolutely dominated Vieira in the midfield battle.

Great shout.

When he scored against Germany, he was shouting "I cant believe it" repeatedly :D

Also, he produced that famous dive in the last minute that allowed ten-man Italy to eliminate Australia.

With the best newspaper headline ever the next day “Who would have thought it-Phil Neville blows the title race wide open”

One game I remember was a 2-2 draw vs Derby County In 2001 where Malcom Christie (I hope I remember the name right) effectively ended our title hopes, don’t recall ever hearing about him after that.

John O’Shea for the entire 02/03 season (if one-season wonders qualify for this thread).

I know he was a loyal servant for a number of years after this, but as absurd as it sounds now, that season he genuinely looked like he was going to become a WC left-back.

After that we appreciated his versatility, but he never reached anywhere near those heights again.

It has just occurred to me though that if we’re going purely by ‘moments’, his goal against the Dippers is surely a good shout!

Diego Milito 2009/10

Had a good scoring record at mid table clubs like Zaragoza and Genoa, played in Serie B for the latter even, then was the star of Inter's treble.

Harsh. Finished 2nd in Serie A goalscoring 3 times. Not a complete one season wonder.

Wasn't wes brown absolutely fantastic for us during the CL season?

I hadn't seen him be that good for that long & to this day there are people who can't believe that he was in our line up.

Wes Brown was at one point considered the best defender at the club, thats whilst Rio was here too.

Brown for me was a really good defender that would be unlucky with an occasional error or an injury that would make him a tad inconsistent.

Whilst SAF regarded him as the most natural defender at the club - I think it was that year he really stood out; especially considering the lad played at RB.

He scored against the scousers & set up Ronaldo in the final too.

He wasn't a mediocre player by any means looking back - but I don't think he necessarily made that step up & brought a level of consistency to his game until that season..
