No one else find it funny that Neville quickly changed subject when David asked him about "best in class" manager?

It never ceases to amaze me how few supporters comprehend what the lad is actually saying. They take on board some sound bites and ignore the rest of it.

Neville in this very rant states categorically that he will never call for a managers head, ever. When David asks him about "best in class" managers he quickly avoids answering, but then a few minutes later decides to be unprofessional and has a good laugh about the notion of Phelan or Rio being named as TD or DoF.

Think about it, the role of Football Manager is something very, very sacred to Gary Neville and he admits here as much.

But in the midst of his ranting here he won't even say that United need a "best in class" manager, but demands a "best in class" DoF at the club.

It's a blatant double standard and an agenda where he actually insults friends / colleagues to make his point.

His Valencia stint has scarred him, not really surprised.

Hope, We Lose
He is saying that we have had more than one world class manager and they have failed. So then you have to look a bit at people in other positions at the club. That's what he's getting at. Just bringing in a new manager won't change anything unless other things change.
We brought in 2 experienced managers, both seemingly past their best. LVG's Bayern were the ones Klopp's Dortmund toppled so he never sounded a great idea to me. Mourinho hadnt looked the same since his experience in Madrid which if I'm not mistaken was his first sacking. He did win the league 1 time with Chelsea after then but I still dont think he seemed the same and at that point he was falling out with everyone at each of his clubs.

I would take a shift above the manager for sure, but it hasnt been on the cards so its a manager's job to operate under those conditions. And we still havent tried a manager who is at their best

To me Neville and his media friends are part of the rot at United.

Gaz is spot on about almost everything. We have no plan or strategy in place and the person making all the key decisions is reactive, has a short term outlook and cares mainly about the bottom line.

We gave David Moyes a six year contract seemingly to replicate Sir Alex’s tenure. Then we employed LVG, who by his own admission wanted only a 2 years contract. So we made a choice to go from a long term manager to a short term manager. Then we scrapped that project in the middle and got in a guy with completely different footballing philosophy. And when the guy delivered a relatively successful league campaign, what did we do? We refused to back him in the market and made it known to the public through leaked reports, knowing fully how the guy was going to react. And still people want to apportion our failures primarily to the managers and not the guy who is appointing and firing them.

The problem at our club is, everyone is not heading in the same direction. We have owners who care about dividends. Ceo who cares about how many followers he can get. Players who are more concerned about gaining social media followers whilst fleecing club for a weekly wage.

Until we have a hierarchy who want to win football games and trophies, as the forefront of their business, we will not compete with the other top 5 clubs and will be overtaken by Wolves and Leicester.

I think were not willing to hire senior, established "football" people because they are unlikely to be prepared to prioritise the business over the football. Eds looking for a yes man to give the appearance of change.

Hopefully there's some wine and noodle executives around the world who were watching tonight and putting in calls asking why their money isn't buying similar

So do you think Manchester United are in good hands? If you do then God help the club if many fans think that way.
I think it’s absolutely dumb fckery for people to constantly think the problem is all down to Ed Woodward not employing a DOF and issue as Gary stated is:

-Dressing Room
-No clue of what player to look for
-Poor characters
-No longevity

It’s just all a bunch of made up crap. It’s simple and very simple. We hire crap managers and we now have instead of 2 squads of crap but 3.

It’s Ole’s turn now and I’m giving him a chance as we all should. But if by November we have; no style of play; the chuckle brothers playing and constant squad rotation. Once again I will blame the manager and continue to do so.

It’s not bloody hard we have two of our rivals painfully winning right now and it’s got zero fcuks to do with having an amazing CEO.

Pretty well I'd say. They've done a great job maintaining a solid structure and high standards to the point where a 2nd place finish and a QF exit in the CL is perceived as a "disastrous" season.

If I recall the piece that forms the title of this thread he said he would never call for a manager to be sacked or criticise the appointment of a manager. All very noble but as a pundit isn't his job to give his opinion on the virtues/vices of appointing a manager to a specific club. He needn't ask for a manager to get the bullet but he can say whether he thinks a manager has run his course at a club.
I think his time at Valencia has to some extent damaged his credibility as a pundit. I would take Wenger much more seriously re management. Wenger has gone out and done it as a manager despite not having a playing career of note.
I would also have issue with Carragher over the whole spitting thing even as a Liverpool fan. Spitting is an odious thing to do and he should have been sacked.

A second place finish in a technically two team league? I’m pretty sure if Ajax finish second there is uproar too. It’s not quite the same as the Prem is it. Plus are United happy about finish 6th? I didn’t realise this was a happy place right now.

So you still have not realized the fact that our CEO does not give a shit about winning trophies and is only interested in making money. YOu think he wants us to win trophies? Wrong he just wants to sell shirts he is a business man not a football man.

Florentino is a clown. It's says a lot about how far we've fallen when Real with him at the helm are seen as a well run club in comparison to United. Also, they're 3rd.

Prove it? If that’s he’s ploy he’s doing a pretty crap job at that too.

After Paul Pogba. Who the hell else is selling shirts. When I go American next I’ll ask them if anyone knows who the fcuk Antony Martial is?

Maybe if we had Ronaldo, Neymar, Pique, Ramos, Modric, Hazard etc playing for us and failing I’d agree. You know like the last shirt selling model. Ronaldo, Beckham, Zidane, Figo, Raul. Does it look like that’s what we are doing right now?

Four CLs in five years. More than we've won in our entire history. Clown indeed...

Thanks you clearly have nothing to offer to this debate. Come back when you have some decent points, we can talk again.
I said it before and it is easy for anyone to see, the club is run by a bunch of clowns. It is even getting worse as time goes on no sign of improvement. The club needs a total overhaul. This is Manchester UNited not some sunday league team. You seem to think the club is in good hands, God save us.

I put that down to Zidane putting together the most complete midfield in the world behind the best matchwinner ever to play the game more than Florentino being some sort of genius. He isn't. He's a clown that happens to have a lot of money to throw around. If you ever doubt how much of a clown he is, revisit what he once said about Makelele to confirm that he is indeed a clueless clown.

Sometimes I wonder how many top class managers need to fail here before fans will admit there's an underlying structural rot as the root cause of all our problems.

Woodward is a clown with a lot of money to throw around. Hasn't done us much good.

Never said Perez was a genius but he deserves credit for Real's success. Bet they win another three CLs before we win our next one.

But I’m ask you for evidence of this. I’m sorry that I’m not easily swayed but a G Neville rant. We say clowns but as i’ve Said who are the good owners. Your only as good as successful your team is. Ed could easily fix this problem. Buy a bunch of ‘galacticos’ I guarantee you we wouldn’t finish 6th. We want to blame the board because of 3 failed managers but all 3 were rubbish. It can happen. Like they say it’s never as good as you believe and never as bad as they say.

He fell out with his three-time CL-winning manager because he refused to rebuild a team after three seasons of virtually no signings and said manager just picked up his stuff and left. Clown.

The team fell apart so spectacularly under two failed managers in a single season that he had to eat shit and go back and talk Zidane back into the job. Clown.

Let's not forget he hired Benitez. Fecking perma-clown for all of eternity.

Real are lucky they have the status that they have. It allowed them to sign Modric, Kroos and Bale, players we were also interested in at the time, but couldn't get because the mighty Real came calling. That fact is also why we had to sell Ronaldo in the end. Real Madrid being Real Madrid allowed them to have the team they had for the last few years. I refuse to give Florentino an ounce of credit when he's proven time and time again to be an inept buffoon.

Better than Woodward, though. I'll give him that.

Actually I think you're misinterpreting. It's not a double standard, he's keeping up with the standard he's talking about..Ole is the manager now and he won't disrespect him by talking about best of class etc. If he truly felt ole was great he'd have said it I think. But already hired so he can't comfortably criticize the appointment as he can w Phelan and Rio prior to them taking the roles

But who really cares about whatever personal agenda Neville may or may not have. Everything he says there is spot on. It doesn't matter at all how he comes to formulate that opinion.

Responded to this same video in another thread and will respond here too. I agree with just about everything Gary said. We need some serious restructuring from top to bottom. Ed is to blame for the shambles we’re in.

To me Neville and his media friends are part of the rot at United.
Bingo. Always on about how things used to be.
Except he's not. He's not looking at the past, he's looking only at the present and future, and how we're getting left behind by City and Liverpool due to the way we're being run. And I agree with pretty much every word.

Take Messi away how are Barca being run? Take Ronaldo away how are Madrid being run?
I think you picked the wrong example. Barcelona and Real are complete opposites. Real are closer to the Woodward model of Galacticos and shirt sales. Except that unlike Woodward, Madrid are ruthless and never tolerate mediocrity. Even if they aren't always successful, they at least give it their best shot. When someone doesn't perform they axe them. Can you imagine the likes of Young, Jones and Smalling lasting at Madrid? The idea is laughable. They're constantly seeking excellence.

Barca on the other hand are the model of football. They happen to earn the most simply because they're the most successful. But their philosophy is always about the football. I don't know the ins and outs of their business but their football model seems pretty flawless and well run. Hence the reason City have basically copied it. La Masia basically preaches the same football philosophy at every layer of the club. They buy, train and manage to one philosophy. They are the antithesis of Woodward.

We are Madrid Lite.

Liverpool and City follow the Barcelona model and are currently beating it. Their playing styles may be different but they're following their strategy of football perfectly and reaping the dividends.

The kind of dividends we care about, not the ones Ed does!

It has EVERYTHING to do with having an amazing CEO / Director of Football / Strategy.
feck the titles if that gets in the way, it's about smart planning and implementation.
It's about laying the right groundwork and reaping the benefits.

City planned for years for Guardiola's arrival.
Yes he may be the best manager, but do you think he could have achieved what he's achieving without the planning?
Could he f*ck. He's always demanded the best and he's always got it. He's a spoiled little brat but he's annoyingly successful and begrudgingly I have to admit he'd also bloody good.

Liverpool also have an excellent structure in place. You could say that Klopp plays an even bigger part of this, but they still have excellent planning and foundations.

We are the antithesis of all that.
As someone else mentioned, we're all pulling in different directions and ultimately the thing that matters most - the football, is the least of our priorities. Which is stupid because obviously this is gonna affect business sooner or later. So the question is are the Glazers just milking us for as much as they can, by putting in the least and are then gonna sell? We'll find out soon enough with the transfers.

Football has changed. Management has changed. And we're still stuck in the stone ages.
The biggest thing from that interview was how we still have management from 4 different reigns - even Moyes'. Staggering!

And we're still paying all of them off. Soon to be followed by Sanchez.

If that doesn't scream clown to you, I don't know what does?

Here's a few more for you.

1. Hiring Van Gaal then switching to Mourinho with a completely different philosophy, so that none of the previous players work.
Losing money on all those mentioned players, as well as getting royally shafted on all other sales and purchases.

2. Giving Mourinho a new contract then denying his transfer targets (particularly defenders, which Mournho has always best at spotting) Then firing him = payout.

3. Meanwhile buying a third choice keeper, a raw talent and a Brazilian maybe (I still think Fred will come good)

4. Paying Alexis Sanchez obscene wages thus destabilizing entire squad and causing major issues with wages.

5. Talking of wages, how about paying everyone in the squad ridiculous wages even before Sanchez arrived, so you can't get rid of anyone. Half of our shit players would play for Utd for even less probably, cos they know they can't move to a better club. And yet we continually increase their wages.

6. To the point where we now can't afford to pay Herrera, who's reportedly on peanuts relatively (Young etc.)
Nor deGea, Nor Pogba.

7. Leaving half the squads contracts to run down, so that they end up negotiating them in the middle of the season, thus removing their focus (deGea) Brilliant for Ole!

8. Renewing the contracts of all the shit players who have been shit for years. Meanwhile increasing their wages again so they're even more difficult to sell.

9. Telling everyone we were going to hold a thorough search for managerial candidates then hiring Ole, before he's been fully tested (and why rock the boat when its doing so well?) I can think of reasons but none are that good, unless he genuinely had no other option) Why put him on a 3 year contract though?

10. A search for a Director of Football that is 10 months and counting.

11. Telling everyone we have pots of money and can buy anyone - naturally then being shafted on transfer fees.

Man I could go on and on.

Fact is Woodward is an absolute clown and Ole is absolutely shafted.

Yes, he may not be up to it. Only time will tell. But he will be operating in the worst conditions imaginable (the leaking roof is the least of his worries, but an excellent metaphor)

Shambles!!!

Fact is Woodward is an absolute clown and Ole is absolutely shafted.

Yes, he may not be up to it. Only time will tell. But he will be operating in the worst conditions imaginable (the leaking roof is the least of his worries, but an excellent metaphor)

Shambles!!!
Great post. The evidence is overwhelmingly damning and one has to be ignorant or wilfully blind to continue to make excuses for Woodward.

In the past 5 years it's been Madrid not spending money and playing youth whilst Barca have only been outspeny by City and haven't been bringing through youth. Sergi Roberto is the only one with Alena getting cameos this season and they are 2 of 5 Spaniards in the whole squad.

Barcelona still have the same philosphy at their club, it might just be a generational thing where the talent wasn't there so they've been buying players for that reason but the shift in Madrid's philosophy is clear to me and what they're doing looks more like what United were doing under Sir Alex.
