Mike Maignan (23) voted best GK in Ligue 1 this season.

Should we be looking at him instead of Onana? Not least because Ajax are a better identifier of talent than us and maybe they've scoped someone with a higher ceiling..:D

Looks great with his feet, physically imposing, quick reflexes. From those admittedly very limited clips I've seen. Doesn't catch the ball enough perhaps.

How do people rate him who have seen him a lot? What's his distribution like?

Now called up to the France NT: "Maignan is part of a team which achieved a superb championship, he oozes serenity, his athletic presence is impressive" -Deschamps.

Very good GK but, I posted this on all the threads that mentioned this rumor. I have no idea why he would go to Ajax at this point of his career.

Exactly. At best it is a sideways step, but in reality, it really isn't.

Not gonna sit here and pretend I've watched Maignan but it's imperative our next GK is a modern goalkeeper. Comfortable coming off his line to sweep, comfortable coming off his line to claim crosses and being good with the ball at his feet. These are all areas I feel De Gea lacks in and it impacts our ability to play out of the back but also play a high line. Of course it also makes us more susceptible to set pieces.

From what I've seen of Onana he is not only a very good keeper but also a very modern one. Would be very happy with him though Maignan does seem impressive. Needs to improve his handling and parrying it out of danger going by the video though.

As in the past, the problem with buying goalies for United is we cant tell whether they are mentally strong or blessed high levels of concentration before buying them except on rare instances. All our previous buys have always been blessed with fantastic talent. But for most, the moment they play under the floodlights of OT, they wilt.

Wow! Surprised to learn he won best GK in Ligue 1 over Walter Benitez. Thought Benitez was an absolute wall for Nice this season.

I agree.
But here's a question.
And it's not a who's best.
What goalkeeper did you never have a question about?

Van Der Sar. We knew what we were getting. Steady Eddie.

I thought Barthez was too short. Bozzie... he was never that impressive at the Villa. Good but not great. The rest were unknown quantities incl Schmikes when they came.

We should sign him over Onana. Cheaper and taller  I haven't seen either play but Onana is a Barca youth product and will jump at the first chance to join them. We'll rather have someone who won't cause problems rather than someone who will be linked to Barca every summer.

Yes, a lot of people saying oh lets replace DeGea with such and such and oh he isnt great with his feet blah blah blah. Think a lot of people forget just how hard it was replacing Schmeichel and I would say that disagreeing with you too as thought Bosnich was excellent at Villa and Barthez was a top keeper if eccentric

The reason it was hard replacing Schmeichel was because Bosnich was a coke head, but he did win us the world club Cup against Palmeiras.

Barthez at 5'9 was too short and was always gonna struggle in the EPL due to that.

Roy Carrol and Tim Howard were never of the required standards.

It's pretty easy to see why we struggled to replace Schmeichel tbf.

Some have desribed him as the best keeper at saving pens in Europe.

If De Gea was to go that's one area we'd massively improve on. He's conceded his last 17 pens for club and country. Last save was March 2016 against Lukaku.

Was going to say ... always alarmed watching a vid of gk who doesn’t catch or hold the ball.

After watching second vid it’s a definite no for me. For all De Gea’s faults his catching and holding of saves one of his underrated strengths. Really not a fan of these keepers whose first instinct is clearly punch/parry. It’s lazy. Work on your craft ffs.

Barthez was 5ft 9? Christ, he is shorter than me.

Was he wearing platform shoes when Fergie met him? I thought he was around 6ft and that's way too short for a goalie in this day & age.

Haven't seen anything of this lad, whats he like generally? Strengths...weaknesses?

Maybe 5'10 at a push

Few modern goalkeepers are excellent catching crosses. Do coaches even stress that outside of UK?

His stats are good compared to other goalies but he's not light years ahead of our own Henderson. For me, the goalie stat to watch is saves per goal, with Oblak in a class of his own.

Definitely no no for me too. He spills far too often. Especially shots that he should catch with ease. Onana is better.

I like him he's a nice keeper, but to me he doesn't scream "worlds best". For example I like Walter Benitez from Nice a lot more.

Also, that's his first very good season... With keeper it's all about regularity through seasons so it's still up to see.

A beast keeper for penalties, though.

I think they catch less because the balls move around a lot more nowadays. Safer just to punch out. Everyone caught the balls when they were made of leather but that all changed with the redesign of the ball.

Looks like De Gea is going to walk away at the end of next season. Gotta start planning the future at some point!

They should do. Wherever you play, catching the call takes pressure off your teammates. Thought that Lille keeper looked messy. Even though Onana doesn’t hold lots, he dealt with shots properly, got them well out of danger.

Could someone make the stats Web with overlay button for each keeper like pro evolution soccer, it's easier to see and compare.

All true yes, I do think getting a quality keeper though is a lot harder than most seem to think. Though I rate VDS higher and Schmeichel in a league of his own, DeGea has been a fantastic keeper for us for several years now, two poor months and people criticising him and seeming to think he will be easy to replace, he wont be

I agree completely, just think it will be easier said than done, been quite a few big keeper moves the last few years so I dont see many even possibly available to step up, though I am totally unaware of the like of Maignan.
Sounding like I am contradicting myself, personally I would be happy enough with Romero as our number one next season unless we do have a genuine quality replacement lined up.....do like Donarumma even though think he needs developing in similar parts of his game as DeGea did, which is a bit strange considering his size

We should have gone for VDS at the time he moved form Italy to Fulham.

Why would we pay . for a new keeper ? why not let Romeiro and Henderson fight for the spot with Romeiro the starter due to his experience (he has always been good when playing)

Romero is a good backup but nothing more than that for the level we want to be at and Henderson has potential but still has plenty of flaws in his game which he may or may not eradicate but is a good couple of years away from being top PL level. We need an answer for right now if Dave is leaving and Romero and Henderson are not it unless we want to fall further behind the top clubs.
