A yellow card version of a penalty is needed

It's wild how badly a yellow card version of a penalty is needed. I'm obsessed with the idea. There are fouls in the box that aren't called because they are penalties, and balls hitting hands in semi-natural positions, and it decides the game without allowing some opportunity for skill to be involved apart from the keeper choosing the right way and someone hitting the ball hard.

Either a shot from the top of the box, or even the top of the D with no wall, or you get to put the ball down (outside the 6 yard box) wherever you like for an indirect free kick.

You'd have to do the math and workshop it to figure out what exactly to apply, but penalties go in like 75% of the time so maybe something in the 25-40% range would be appropriate?

How about this:

The ball is still placed on the penalty spot and the goalie has to stay on their line until the ball is kicked. Every other player has to stand on the halfway line. The ref blows his whistle and everyone can runs toward the stationary ball. If a defending player gets to the ball first he can clear it, if an attacking player gets there first they can shoot.

Daniel James makes this sound like a good idea.

They have one...they're indirect free kicks in the box... And they're entertaining as feck.

Refs need to use the rules that apply for indirect free kicks instead of pretending they don’t exist.

Penalties are fine and fair imo, throw ins are the one of the worst things about football.
It’s hardly any sort of advantage unless you have Rory Delap in your team, slows the game down so fecking much.

Would it not be more "yellow card-like" if the first instance resulted in a warning and the second one the award of a penalty?

Agreed. They should have huge, thick glass walls surrounding the pitch so the ball never goes out of play.

I like some of the proposals in this thread. I can't see FIFA doing anything drastic any time soon, especially so soon after implementing VAR. I reckon to change a rule in the game is not as simple as some may think.

This is my favourite football idea since having a tall keeper bounce the ball off a tall centre backs head.

On a scale of 1-10, just how obsessed are you with this idea?

Taking the penalty blindfolded might work. Or asking the mascot to take the penalty. It'd at least give them something to do, those lazy feckers.

Love this idea @NoPace

What about a 1-on-1 with the keeper? Where both the player and gk start some distance away. Not all that dissimilar from hockey

For penalty shootouts you could do this with one player from each team. And the order of who lines up must be delivered beforehand. Would be worth it just to see the look on Matic's face as he by coincidence had to line up next to Mane.

Kick offs should start in a similar way. The ball is on the centre circle and each team is stood on their own goal line. The ref blows up and CHARGE!
The goalies would start from centre circle and run towards their own goal once the ref blew whistle. MOAR CARNAGE!

And you can only use hands, not feet and you score goals by hitting other players with the ball.

Maybe before I moved to the states. It certainly is an American influenced suggestion

Edit:
Oh man, yes it is!!!

By the look of this it was in the 90's as I remember a few of the players from the 94 World Cup. Eric Wynalda scored a cracking freekick at it. Also Roberto Donadoni mixed in there.

Edit: Ah you beat me with the video. I went down a rabbit hole of 94 World Cup goals.

Yeah I moved to the US in 96. I don't know when they stopped these, because in some odd way they're familiar to me. Maybe I saw highlights of it years on.

Having found these gems ... Absolutely should re-instate these into the game!!!

That rule would make the penalty area a broadway stage
It would make for some nice showboating reels with some of the top players.

Could you imagine something like this from Joao Felix?

Either a shot from the top of the box, or even the top of the D with no wall, or you get to put the ball down (outside the 6 yard box) wherever you like for an indirect free kick.
Juninho once scored a free kick like that. #5 on here, 20 seconds in.

As far as I can gather it was awarded because their opponents had committed a certain number of fouls. Some weird experimental rule in this tournament - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torneio_Rio_–_São_Paulo

The rules aren’t enforced to the extent they should, but indirect free kicks in the pentalty area definitely are a thing. Remember this one, for instance?

That's basically how it works in water polo. They swim for the ball instead of running, obviously.
