It does seem a bit "dreamer" ish to think that Greenwood is suddenly going to be the answer instead of a guy who has scored 20 a season for years, and is very high up in the all time Premier league scorers list
I fully agree. Sometimes I feel that people really want Ole to fail.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Ever since he's been here he's had like 1 month of really good football while the rest was horrendous
He was fairly good for the first half of 17/18. Had a good scoring spree early on, and after that even though he wasn't scoring many he was arguably our best player for a month or so while pretty much every one else was playing poorly. Was mostly poor in the second half of that season though.

Of course, 18/19 was another matter entirely. Incredibly unbelievably shit for the first half of that season to the extent that I truly believe he was the worst regular starter in the entire league. Improved a bit under Ole and did have a few games where he actually did quite well, but overall he had a terrible second season.

We're never going to get back what we paid for Lukaku - that is the reality. We overpaid and we need to accept that.

His value will just go down if he stays. I would make a deal with Inter. He's been mouthing off since we were fighting for top 4 about Italy, so can't imagine having him around.

I think we can holdout for more though, the deal doesn't have to be done today. The rumour was 10m up front with 30 next year and 30 the following so a total of 70m. We have to give 5m to Everton so if they bump the offer up 10m that covers Evertons' cut and would net us the 75m we paid originally. That seems fair and as soon as they shift one outgoing player they will have the funds available to do it.

I'm sure it gives them flexibility with FFP though, which is supposed to be a sticking point. Besides, if we don't plan to invest the money then why not take a loss, get his wages off the books and clear the path for Greenwood? Over 3 years, €70m is still a decent amount. I'm sure we could get at least €30m up front.
Why are fans turning into accountants like his wages are a problem to Utd or the fact that saving them makes feck all difference to us anyway. If we wanted to make savings, we should never have given Jones, Smalling, Young, Mata extended contracts then. Rom not being here isn't getting in Greenwoods path, he's gonna get the same level of minutes irrespective of whether Rom's here or not.
If people want to play at being accountants, they better consider if it's a good business model to start giving away assets at a loss especially if during that loan deal he starts scoring a load of goals for Inter. Don't forget our most successful part of last seasons, he contributed as much as anyone else to it so he still has value.

A bigger picture that fans are forgetting is if we are losing money from players we bought, there is less fecking chance of us getting the money from the yanks to buy high profile players in the future...why would they agree to fund transfers when the highest ones to date, walked out the door for nowt?

Ok that sounds fair. The stories coming out though are that he'll likely stay. Can't imagine Conte's tantrum if that happens:D

What if, and hear me out, what if he stays and keeps banging in goals, which could well happen. His value skyrockets.

Because if you look at FFP the wage bill is more relevant than transfer spend. I don't think we should take a loss on Lukaku but I would cheerfully give free transfers to half a dozen other members of the squad starting with Sanchez.

Yes of course that's possible. On the balance of probabilities though, I don't believe it will happen, but I accept that I could be dead wrong.

The one thing we can say that's positive is FFP is the least of our problems. Clearly evidenced by giving Smalling, Jones, Young and Mata new contracts on probably more money. Sanchez....don't get me started on that one.

We could always settle for a lower fee if they take Sanchez as well - free of cost, with just his wages to subsidise:lol:

Re contracts given to Smalling and Co...worst thing you can do before buying is to sell everyone. If you have not enough players in the squad, you look more desperate when trying to buy

Most successful part of last season, he contributed as much as anyone else? If it's about probability, he guarantees goals. The problem is he offers nothing else so when he's not scoring, you might as well put your faith in a corner flag to control and pass the ball to a red shirt...

The mantra of 'one deal at a time' will really bugger us over if outgoings are included as well, Inter will drag this out until the last minute.

Selling requires buyers which there wouldn't be much takers. Give those players like we did with Tony a very clear message that your times as come to an end here irrespective of whether you stay or not. SAF has shown how you move players in whilst also moving players out.

Been thinking about that part in bold for a while, it also seems to me that the Lukaku deal is going to drag on which is something I am dreading, I want to get this done as soon as possible so we can get his replacement in and give him time to gel with the squad. Just hope that when we sell him that Woody doesn't think we have enough firepower in the squad that we don't need to sign a replacement.

Not necessarily. There was at least a month in the middle of his first season when the goals dried up but his all round play was surprisingly good; better than many on here expected of him. If he stays and there’s to be a chance he can do that again, the priority must surely be getting him to lose all that weight he put on last summer. Letting him get away with that was disgraceful on the club’s part.

He scored 7 in his first 7 for us. And that’s the last time he put up any sort of consistent goal-scoring form. He followed that run with 5 in 19, including games against all our rivals.

If we’re hoping he can somehow return to the form of those first 7 games and we keep him to depend on for goals, it’s surely just as big a gamble if not more than replacing him.

Greenwood is so green that he pisses grass. We've seen that on his debut. If he wasn't so inexperienced he would have bagged at least 2 goals. If Lukaku leaves then he will need to be replaced.
it was his debut and was our best player . Rashford was doing the same half the season

I'd like to think Woody has no say in this at all, but you're probably right that he somehow does.

The fact we are hearing clear media leaks about Newcastle wanting too much for Longstaff, and us publicly asking Inter more than they're ever likely to pay for Lukaku, plus Pogba been priced out of a move, tells the story to me, 'no value in the market', or more likely we're just incapable of negotiating properly nowadays, probably because we've lost all credibility in the market over the years since Fegie and Gill left.

I can see a positive twist been put on everyone staying put, whilst we drag someone new over the line near deadline day as a added bonus.

Lukaku can still fight for a spot. In his own words, he should man up.
I think he has it in him but he is the type of striker that needs supply and our wing options are pretty dire with martial that goes off the boil too many times is not really a supplier, James may or may not, let's not get started on our right wing it's that bad.

You make a valid point especially the part in bold. . What I find strange is that Woody complains there is no value in the market when we are trying to recruit players but asks for insane sums for our players "think it is a case of pot and kettle". It seems the only negotiating tactic he has is that we are willing to offer stupid wages that other clubs are not prepared to match and players can see Woody for the mug he is and try to get even higher contracts.

I understand it is hard to get quality players due to lack of Champions League football. But maybe he should try a different strategy when trying to sell the proposition of signing for the club to our targets. I think he should try to get the players to buy into becoming a player who goes down in history as being a vital cog that makes a considerable contribution in making us great again.

He doesn't fit the current system and should be sold as its in both the teams interest and the players.

On a related note I hate the way we haggle over transfer fees. Maybe its just a symptom of the current times but I really wish we got our business done quicker like Real Madrid have done this year.

Real Madrid have been negotiating for ages, they didn't do it quicker but started sooner.

Madness. I stand with the club wanting to get £85-£90 million. We are not to be treated like fecking mugs by those Inter douchebags.
Madness is the club expecting anyone to pay a fee in the region that they were foolish enough to sign him for in the first place.

Do you think maybe we should look at this and try to adopt a similar approach?
Of course we should but when the club relies on the manager to make a list, we won't do it the years when we change managers.

Exactly, there is ONE club currently interested in him. Who else will buy him for this price? Next year if he isn't a starter he will be on the bench and even more of a lardarse if not playing every week, but his value is somehow going to rise

Is that really true? Because working that way makes zero sense when you're looking to overhaul a squad like we need to.

It’s probably bullshit the one deal at the time strategy. Media bullshit. Why would we do that?
Of course it’s complete bollocks - any idiot can see that. If you can’t, you’re more idiotic than an idiot and goodness knows what that make you...

Obviously there are deals that can only take place and are dependent on if/when certain players are sold. But if anyone actually believes a club/ any club/ Man Utd can only work on only one transfer deal at a time, then quite frankly you should be committed - you’re a certified village idiot.
