There will be a lot of teams packing the defence against us, but probably with a better counter attack as Perth’s were pretty non existent. Will need to see how we defend against a better side, can’t imagine AWB will have too many problems, looks rock solid 1 on 1.
He does look solid. Still think we need a new centreback and if Shaw is injured a leftback as well.

Definitely want a centre back. Need to gut that position as well, too many players. I might just hold off on left back for now, it’s annoyingly if Shaw has got bad hammie but we have other players who can play there.

His quotes about timing being an issue in regards to transfers was a bit concerning, especially when sources say we are meant to be calm and relaxed about the situation

You should never judge players on their ore-season form. It’s completely irrelevant. They are just getting their fitness up.

Is it better if the club appear stressed?

True, but if the players are doing well, there shouldn't be anything for us to complain about. And it breeds some positivity, especially after so much negativity, during the Summer transfer window.

We all love United
Wouldn't mind if the second half team today starts the game against Chelsea on opening day, with De Gea and Lindelof coming in for Joel and Rojo respectively. Second half was a joy to watch. Speaking of Lindelof, why didn't he play today?

Got the ball a lot, which means his team mates trust him. I think he has a long way to develop and needs to add some skills on the ball and reading of the match to his game, but happy with his performance.
What I've seen of him from Swansea, players need to get in box early, his pace gets him to the ball really quick. This will come players will catch on to this, they can make there runs? That's what this preseason is all about.

.AWB , he's a player.

It was a good work out for the lads, I thought the two new lads played well shown glimpses to why we brought them in, and what a incredible experience for the Perth kids that came on to play UTD,

Now onto wed, for a small game against dirty Leeds

What a fantastic addition in Wan-Bissaka! Apparently we can play on the right side... when AWB is there! Amazing difference between him and Dalot! Just amazing. Wish James was played in the second half as well, him playing in the first half - we couldn't see his qualities fully, but seems like more of a work-in-progress with amazing talent compared to not just AWB but even compared to Gomes and Greenwood?

Martial's and Lingard's "performances" - a cause for huge worry. Same lukewarm thing as last season. I hope Ole gives chance to GGG. It's not just pre-season thing. Saw the youngsters play last pre-season as well, but they've grown a lot! They are ready for their chances. Chong needs to go on a loan, though – not there yet at all.

And Tuanzebe! He looked like our most solid central defender today. Sell Jones (for sure) and Rojo, start Lindelof and Tuanzebe, unless we buy a world-class central defender in this transfer window!

Yeah definitely. But as we all know from pre-season. We could win every game yet still be shocking in the league.

Didn’t have time to watch the game. Reading through the players’ performance threads is giving me nothing! No one seems to agree if our boys were good or bad.. (except for Gomes)

Still I’ll give it a try, which players impressed you today?

Different eleven in the second half.

Greenwood was pretty good i thought.

Chong was poor.

There's only one United!
I had said about James that he will be getting us a number of freekicks as he's very difficult to stop.

When a winger kicks the ball along the line then the full-back is in trouble if the winger is faster than him - only way to try to stop him is to double-mark.

Positives:

- High press, what a breath of fresh air to see
- Good passing and movement, particularly 2nd half
- James was so exciting to watch and will definitely be a fan favourite
- Tuanzebe solid throughout, nothing got past him
- Don’t think Perth Glory had a shot
- Both Young and Lingard dome really well, which is something I haven’t said that often
- Gomes was outstanding and I really hope he gets given a chance this season
- AWB was fantastic at RB and hopefully that’s that “problem” position now sorted, he’s going to be a key player for us
- Geat to see Garner score his first goal

Negatives:

- Martial still looks so one dimensional, you just know what he is going to do when he has the ball
- Matic was as slow as a week in jail and hopefully is not an automatic 1st choice starter
- We still lack creativity in the side
- Disappointed with Chong, looked like a rabbit stuck in the headlights out there
- Evident in the 2nd half that our midfield is so much better when Pogba plays and who knows if he will still be here

Overall good performance and result. James and Gomes the standouts. Still need a couple of new players brought in.

Was anyone else surprised to see a 4-2-3-1 formation? Pretty sure we all assumed a 4-3-3 formation, or a diamond, this season. Probably shouldn't read too much into it due to being just the first pre-season game, but it is intriguing. Especially Pogba in that dual pivot and the #10 position it opens up (Bruno?).

Perth Glory was anything but glorious. How they had 32% is beyond me. They tried to play from the back even though we were pressing and they seemed to give the ball away/get tackled as soon as they got it. And I have seen matches where a team gets zero shots on target, but I don't think I've ever seen a game where a team didn't even attempt a shot. The closest they came to goal was a weak free kick lofted into the 6 that J Pereira handled easily. James was good at the start, making good runs behind his FB cover and Young was linking up with him nicely. Gomes stood out as well. I liked that we were trying to get to the byline a lot before whipping it across or cutting it back, but I would also have liked to see a few crosses put in from deeper areas just to mix it up a bit. I would like to see more of Garner. That was a great finish for his goal but not on the field long enough to get much of an assessment. Greenwood will also be a very dangerous player once he starts finishing his chances. Unlucky to hit the post. Chong didn't impress much from the right but looked better from the left. All in all a good match and 2-0 was a very generous scoreline for Perth. Had they come out of their 10 man defense it could have gotten really ugly so good on them for holding their shape and playing a very desciplined defensive match, but other than their #10 drawing some fouls with some good hold up play, they offered nothing in attack...

Priorities after seeing that have to be CB and CDM. I'm not so concerned about CAM(Fernandes) not, I'd play Gomes there when we play a formation with a dedicated no 10.

I'm expecting to see the formation change quite a lot under Ole, with plenty of interchanging between Rashford, Martial, Greenwood & James in the attacking positions.

I think Ole will be expecting goals from his midfielders, Pogba, Gomes, Mctominay and Fernandes if he comes in.

Overall there were plenty of positives.

Expext Tuanzabe to be the third choice CB(plenty of cup games).
Gomes deserves game time.
Greenwood and Rashford could be phenomenal as split strikers(which I expect to see).
AWB is what weve needed for a long long time.

Greenwood impressed but then he always does.

Other than that Perth were so shite I'm not sure what you can judge. They only made it more than 40 yards from their own goal about 4 times in the entire game.

Bit concerning that only our second half team displayed any actual footballing ability.

Judging not specifically from the performance but the coaching directives, the players still have no structure in being able to break down a defence and seem clueless. There was nothing in the movement of the team to create clear chances.
Any runs that were being made around the box were individual spontaneous movements to create space, no triangles, no give and go's being formed there was no shape to the attacking play it felt like having to rely on individual brilliance for chances.

I know it's only pre season but those are some glaring signs in my opinion, what evidence have we seen from the coaching staff to see that's it's benefiting any of the players ? That's not just pre season but also last season, the only good player for us who improved was Pogba but he's already our only world class outfield player.

Cheers! Yeah, the first game is always more training than a competitive match. You didn’t think Gomes was any good?

Worst - Matic, Chong, Martial
Best - Greenwood, Gomes, Bissaka

I am insanely excited by Greenwood. Has he grown a few inches?

Thanks for the reply. I see your point. Time will tell if our coaching staff can implement an offensive system with any consistency.

wickla!
Watched the highlights back (watched the game too today)
AWB - how good is it to have a proper full back
Gomes- very Exciting
Greenwood - Quality
James - very good , very quick
Axel - solid but not much of a test
Lots to be positive about whats coming through.

And the kit looked pretty decent in Fairness
