Rashford has had a real poor game IMO. Nothing he tried came off. Martial’s finishing (which is what he is now responsible for) hasn’t been good. We seem to have been caught off guard with how good Chelsea pressed us, which is weird.

Poor half, lets hope we can show up in the second. Lucky to be in the lead at this point.
How we have not bought a proper striker is beyond me

The issues in the team are clear and obvious.

Upgrades on Pereira and Lingard would change the entire performance here.

Both sides look unconvincing, but our midfield deserves a special mention.

That midfield doesn't have any stability whatsoever. Periera is doing feck all, Pogba needs to keep it simple sometimes, stop trying to take on 2-3 players everytime ffs.

Martial and Shaw have been woeful as well. Ffs stop fully fecking around and just cross the ball.

Defence has looked okay so far. Every one of us knew we needed a new midfielder or two and here we are weaker than last season. Shambles from Ed.

That minefield is far too open. Chelsea get from defence to attack with ease and it's up to the defenders to win the ball while closing the space.

But it's not like we didn't see this coming

Oh look, wanky complaints from our residential whingers.

Dodgy first 15, but other than a few mistakes which we can put down to first game nerves, we’ve looked decent.
We have looked decent for 5 mins after the goal, 40 remaining mins were shocking to be fair.

Been anreally nervy awkward game to watch. We have been 2nd best for most of it, the obvious issue is midfield. There is no protection for the defence and no link upwith the forwards. Too many flicks and carelessly giving the ball away....really frustrating

Mctominay and Pereira look lost against this Chelsea midfield.

On a positive maguire and AWB have started well

Some sloppy football at times from both teams as expected at this point from these sides. Uniteds somehow pressing high with the front 3 at the same time as the back line sits deep.

I'm going to hold of giving opinions on individual performances. The match day thread has that covered as usual...

Lucky to be ahead still. Credit to chelski because they have been the more cohesive unit especially going forwards.

We look a bit disjointed especially in midfield, although you can tell we are capable of bursts of brillance when we get the space to run forwards. Alot of wasted crosses/deliveries and also some shocking give aways in midfield.

Pogba is excellent when he is not trying to do too many tricks and keeps it simple. Similar to when Ronaldo used to do an overabundance of tricks but cut it out after a while. Scholesy was right in saying that some of the players dwell on the ball too long and need a "kick" in training.

The bright spots are obviously the two new boys, Wan Bissaka and Maguire. Those two have just transformed our defence and hopefully they go from strength to strength.

The only issue is that our midfield seems very out of sync with the attack and at times we are getting overrun too easily. I feel Perreira is still not ready to be in the first eleven even though he does have good work rate and the potential for a deadly set piece delivery.

Interesting to see if we will throw on Dan James or Greenwood at some point?

    Positives

    -AWB has defended very well
-Our pressing isn't perfect by any means but it caused Chelsea big problems a few times

Apart from that we haven't looked very good. What's going on in Pogba's head? At least three times where he tried something needlessly elaborate when the easier and better option was a simple pass or continue the run. Martial looks lively but wasteful. Who is supposed to be on the right side for us? Still completely lopsided, playing down the left and getting nowhere with it.

Awful first 15 minutes, we looked completely clueless. Got gifted a penalty, thank feck for that.

Somewhat better after that but the last 10-15 minutes were mostly about Chelsea again. We're lucky they hit the post twice.

Our midfield is non-existent, as expected - I only know Pereira is on the pitch because for some inexplicable reason he takes all our set pieces, despite being evidently terrible at them. He's not the worst player on the pitch, that honour goes to Rashford, even with the excellently taken penalty.

Both clubs can expect long, hard seasons on this evidence...

AWB is going to be starting for England for years from the looks of things, looking like a real player.

Rock solid in defence and not as bad as advertised moving forward

We need a player that has the ability to dictate the game. Pogba and McTominay are not those players.
Does not help with AWB and Shaws abilities on the ball either.

PP plays with to high a risk to play as one of two central midfielders. McT does not have the technical ability.

But this was known last summer as well.

Rashford very poor. Lingard has barely had a touch. Everyone looks nervous to be fair, on both sides.

We are not closing them down quickly enough at the sides of midfield. It's letting them stretch us far too easily down the flanks.

Disjointed movement up top. No one seems to know how or when to run in behind, Martial especially. His effort and pressing has been much better, but his movement as a centre forward is non-existent.

Luke Shaw doesn't have a clue what to do once he passes the halfway line.

    Wan Bissaka has been excellent.

Perreira and Jesse are playing like they were out on the sauce last night and well Rashford is just having a bit of a stinker. McT has been pulled about all over the shop as well.

Replace Perreira and Jesse so we can actually get the press we had working in preseason going.

Sick to death of Pogba taking 409 touches every time he gets the ball but I suspect it’s not all his fault if there’s no options or movement.

Still wish he’d release it so much quicker though. Easy passes and he keeps hold of it then ends up either losing it close to our goal or passing back whilst Chelsea have gotten back into position.

Shit half from us tbh, lucky to be ahead. Wan Bissaka, Maguire and Lindelof our best players, midfield non existant, Martial ok but a bit frustrating, Rashford poor decision making, Pereira ok at best... We've had openings but just poor decision making in attack and sloppiness all around

Pogba poor, Rashford too but has scored penalty, Martial running more than ever but without final product, Pereira and Lingard both exist in theory not in practice.
Lindelof and AWB great so far, Maguire very good, the rest meh.
We look very disjointed, hope Ole sorts them out for second half.

We look absolutely clueless in the final third.

Without Maguire and AWB we would be royally boned.

Chelsea were the better team in that half, comfortably. You'd have to be blind to think otherwise. They hit the woodwork twice and we haven't even hit the target apart from the penalty.

EDIT: Actually Pogba did have a shot on target.

    Impressed with the new signings.
    Shame we didn’t get more!

    Solid defensively. No midfield.

Not much difference in ability of both sets of players but an absolute chasm between play quality. Easy to say which team has been coached, and unfortunately this is where Ole falls. I'm willing to give him as much as time as possible but just not seeing anything to pin my Hope's on.

Think it's fair to say we got away with that in the first half. Defense has looked decent but have been left exposed time and again by those in front of them. Our ball retention hasn't been nearly good enough and our pressing often leaves a lot to be desired with easy options left wide open allowing them to pass around it easily and usually gaining easy progress into out half.

Maguire and AWB have been great, so has Lindelof. Our midfield is getting absolutely hammered here though. Just nonexistent. Martial also very poor.

A very poor, sloppy half in possession. The one positive to take for me is that there are already signs that the Lindelof Maguire pairing is going to unlock Pogba a bit more. Unfortunately today Pogba has been one of those most guilty of being sloppy so not really reaping any rewards.

Interesting game. We’ve looked good in patches. As have Chelsea.

Pogba has been dire. Holding onto the ball too long again when he doesn’t need to.

Lingard and Pereira should be nowhere near the starting eleven for any club looking to qualify for CL football. Both of them would struggle for a starting spot at most midtable clubs in the PL yet here they are.

Lampard has Chelsea playing a specific brand of cohesive football in the just 2 months which Ole has never done in 8.

    So tragic.

Defense looks good midfield is worryingly bad. Forward is crap.

Who would think playing a front line that can’t pass the ball would be an issue?
