Mourinho laying into the youngsters at Chelsea. Nothing about Jorginho and Kovacic lacking cutting edge, or Azpilicueta's killer mistakes. Interesting.

4 goals scored on opening day. Against a big rival. Clean sheet. Debut goal. MOTM performance on debut. Can't possibly complain (but oh if only we had a proper midfield). Sure there'll be time for that, but for now, absolutely buzzing! Get in...

I am buzzing! Going to ignore any negatives for now and enjoy the shock result.

Rashford and Martial answered a few questions. So glad they got their goals.

Delighted for Dan James.

Pogba doing what he is does best and gets a couple of assists.

Maguire was a rock, sorry I mean slab. Couldn’t resist

AWB was an absolute machine, the lad is class.

Greenwood got minutes which is good against a good team.

Lindelof looks great next to Maguire and they are going to have a great partnership.

Shaw looked decent and will benefit from the other 3 at the back.

De Gea solid as per. Pereira got an assist.

Lingard had some good bits of play, especially his little one two’s and has bags of energy and good movement. He showed a glimpse of what he can do when he was about to pull off a great dribble past their whole back line and was hacked.

McTominay much better than Matic, but is NOT a holding midfielder.

Feels like i had a blackout. Four to nil against Chelsea is a great way to start the season.
Hope this will give us momentum going forward.
Bring on Wolves!

Authoritative game from big Harry and AWB. They both look like money well spent. Rash and Martial grew into the game. Pogba didn’t have his best game today but even when he’s not at his best he’s capable of moments like that. Couldn’t be happier for James, the raw emotion when he scored was beautiful.
That was probably for his dad.

We can now play the ball out of defence!
Best performance in a utd shirt for Lindelöf. Never thought he had it in him. Maguire is a beast! Lingard/Rashford/ Martial: The new Holy Trinity!

Way better 2nd half, 1st half was poor. There were times when we looked like we playing this game for the first time ever.

Great win at the end, 3pts, i just hope we will improve our football in general because when go against parked bus, not sure how the heck we gonna break that, even today in their box, we were making some weird moves.

Loved Maguire and Lindelof giving each other the confidence to ping the ball about ..
No more Smalling/Jones please unless absolutely necessary ...

The scoreline flatters us a bit but I'm not complaining. Our first half display still worries me shitless, in that we're a Pogba hissy fit away from a season from hell, but plenty of positives in the second.

I really like the look of our new signings.

Well, that was a weird one but i'm very happy with the scoreline

It didn't really tell us anything we didn't know about our strengths and weaknesses. Teams are going to find our press extremely difficult to cope with, our counter attack is blistering in it's pace and energy, Maguire is so strong in one on one duels. Midfield was all over the place in the first 55 mins. McTominay really improved in the 2nd half but had a bit of a 'mare in the first and Chelsea were really getting at that left hand side in the first half.

We're gonna be arguing about Pogba's best position/role all season again aren't we  two sublime chances created for the goals, lost the ball cheaply, ran down blind alleyways, showed great power and pace at other times.

If Chelsea sort out that defence and bring Kante back in then they might surprise a few people. They cut us to pieces in the first half and were a bit unlucky.

NOW I'm buzzing!

If only we had been signing two players per window that are so evidently Man Utd first XI material...

Oh, and James, delighted for him.

For me Lindelof was outstanding. Always making the right decisions, always in the right place covering for Maguire when he went forward. PLayerd like a verteran with many years of experience.
Second was Pogba. Ive never seen this Pogba. Disciplined CM next to McTominay. Again outstanding. Cant tackle but will use his intelligence to be in the right positions defensively and work hard to regain possession. Then attack with his array of passing and driving from midfield. Not as fancy as last year where he was pushed up a lot more but a much more effective midfielder.

I think Fred needs to get a chance in the same setup to see what he can add. Midfield was bypassed a bit to easily again at times and Pereira was ineffectual apart from the assist..

Was it a bit shaky at times? Yes. But to be honest I don’t really care. If we think that we will dominate teams like Chelsea then we are fooling ourselves. I just enjoyed watching United for the first time probably since Ole’s first match in charge. I hope we become a bit more solid and I am sure that will happen. Can’t wait for the next game!

Completely agree I also felt the enjoyment watching United defend, with not a Jones, Smalling or Young in sight.

Valid concern going forward, though, that the pressing wasn't working and the sitting deep and breaking was the only real style we saw towards the end of last season. Worked a charm today (!), but the pressing game is the one that's ultimately needed, so how can that be implemented, if it's what Ole ultimately wants?
Some other post in this thread talked about the quality of pressing. I assume it is something you work on day by day, we've seen an improvement there, but it definitely has to improve more to be effective in every game. And even then it is fairly possible that it wont work every single time, that's why is very interesting to see the manager address the problem quickly and switch tactics to something that suits better the on going scheme in the match. On the contrary there's the stubborness we saw before, which we all now if horse crap.

Pressing game seems to be plan A, but our team benefits from this kind of flexibility from the manager and it's good to see it suits the squad.

Not really sure what to make of that as our pressing wasn’t as good as it was during pre-season but first half Perreira and Lingard looked like they were running in sand. Then spells after the goals it suddenly looked like we had more energy. We were sloppy with the ball as well and first half I’m not sure what Rashford and that were doing just leaving the fullbacks in a 2 vs 1 situation but 2nd half we improved a bit. We can do better than this but 4 goals and the newbies performed well and delighted for James.

Fantastic result but the scoreline flattered us a little.
Positives:
Blistering counter attacks
De Gea looks back to his best
Maguire Looks a world class talent
Martial could really be something back in his favourite position and back in the number 9 shirt.
Rb finally appears to be sorted for the foreseeable future. Bissaka with another good display however he can be quite inconsistent over the 90 minutes. At only 21 though he could develop into top class.
Great to see young James get his debut goal

Negatives:
Gave the ball away too carelessly at times
Our Midfield gets bypassed way too easily exposing the defence. This was a real problem last year and I noticed it quite a bit in preseason as well.
Pereira with a good assist but overall just looks a cut below this level.

I see fans on r/chelseafc saying it's a flattening result but how? They had a decent 1st half where they troubled United but I thought Utd was clearly superior in the 2nd half and the 4-0 scoreline is a relatively fair score.

Over the moon with that. Maguire was fantastic, chuffed for James, AWB was rock-solid with his one-on-ones and had a fantastic first half.

Pogba had a very odd game. In the first half he was producing a bog-standard midfield job with a sprinkle of unnecessary flashness but as soon as we switched to playing on the break he came into it. He can have as many odd games as he wants it he keeps making those kind of contributions.

On the BBC player rater, Pogba received an average of 6.31, fourth lowest score for United, below Greenwood.

People are idiots.

Positives -
The back 5
Martial up top
Clean sheet
Matic not in starting 11
Scoring 4 goals
The pace of Martial, Rashford, James
Starting to play out from the back

Negatives -
The amounts of possession Pogba gave away.
Pereira looking lost out there mainly in the 2nd half.
Been outplayed for 1st 20 mins of both halves.

Overall , It was a tricky opener we’ve scored 4 and not conceded. Bring on Wolves we owe them big time for last season.

The pace we have on the pitch is electric. Our DNA is as a classic counter-attacking team. Opposing CBs will hate playing against us because they’ll need to deal with the high press and Martial and Rashford getting in behind. You can see why we bought James. Just adds more speed.

Addition of Maguire is massive. He’s captain material for sure. Just wins aerial challenges and is really smart with his play.

I do feel that unless we are on the break, we run out of ideas in the final third. When you consider that a lot of mid and lower table teams will sit back and won’t allow us to play on the counter, we have major questions to answer when we are trying to break down a well organized defence.

Would be scary to think if we had a solid CDM. Very good today. Lingard was very good aswell but don't see him getting many mentions.

Maguire and AWB were absolute class, couldn't be happier with our defense. De Gea with a few key saves aswell.

I never seen Martial run that much before. But what topped it off was seeing SAF smiling and laughing.
I thought mctom was good at times today. Not flawless but good. Pogba contributed so little in the first half that he had to do a lot to compensate. Might be that mctominay is good but just not good enough to do it all on his own like kante or someone similar have done in the past
