After weathering 10 minutes of southampton going all guns blazing ii thought we played well in the first half. Scored a great goal and made chances for more. James impresses me immensely very direct and frightening pace and a good finisher.
Rashford was disappointing again, he doesn’t seem to have progressed at all in the last year or 2. He has pace but not much else compared to other prem top strikers.
Second half we tried to control the game instead of going for a 2nd and in doing so let them back into it..(as per) i was going to say we have a much improved defence, the McGuire lindalof partnership looks great and WBS is awesome. Then they go to sleep and let that tall Southampton centre back all the room he needs to head an equaliser. Terrible defending/organisation/coaching maybe? surely McGuire should have been on him tight as...

We have fecked up big time not replacing Lukaku with a top striker and even further in not replacing Herrera and Fellani.
Other than Pogba our midfield is very average and for a club of our stature thats criminal..

Give Greenwood a run he is more than ready in my view.

OGS doesn't know who are players not playing well and is not ruthless enough to change tactically.
Pereira has one of his worse performance and should be taken off earlier.
Pogba is not playing well in his holding position and should be moved up so that he won't put the team under constant pressure by frequently loosing the ball.
Bringing in Lingard is a mistake as Lingard is trying to get some glory by shooting even his team mate is in a better position.
"Sigh", United is going to struggle all season long.
Pereira is crap

Since Fergie left I could probably count on 1 hand the amount of times were we've played the same in the second half as we have in the first. We're a very schizophrenic side nowadays.

Another frustrating day again, another game should have taken all points! Can't believe there goal!
Not clinical enough again, already we have to go on a run of wins to get up the table?
Transitional period I can put up with, giving away sloppy goals I can't.

I think Rashford should stay on the left and put Greenwood through the middle. Rashford should have been on the end of one of those 2/3 cross across the face of goal. He just lacks the instinct to get poachers goals.

I thought we played quite well actually but we’re really suffering from a lack of squad depth. Pereira on the right was woeful, but not really his fault as that position just didn’t seem to fit him at all!

I thought the subs were good and we looked instantly improved with two holding mids and Pogba pushed up the pitch. With the lack of attacking talent we have we really need to get Pogba further forward in future.

I've said this since before the Summer. Ole will be fired in 2019.
But the problem runs more deeper than a bad player or manager.
Our team is performing badly, from top to bottom.
The board, Woodward, Glazers, contract negotiators (we consistently pay silly wages), scouts (unable to unearth any gems, but relying on big names - even D.James was recommended by Ryan Giggs), manager (I think Ole is better than what we are seeing), coaches (McKenna and Carrick should be fired - they have been absolute dog shite since they became coaches), players (don't get me started), the medical team (who allowed Lukaku to get really fat).
If you replace the manager, nothing will change. The only way to change our culture is give the power to the manager (removing player power) and remove Woodward as DoF.
Once players realise that the manager is not going to be sacked when we play badly, they'll buck up their ideas.
At present, the players know that if they play badly, they'll be protected, because the manager will get the sack and not them.

I'd like to think it's coming and sometimes it takes a few indifferent results to get there
We've been getting poor results since the PSG game last year.
We have been showing relegation form for several months.
I am not sure if some fans remember last season. To remind you we finished with a draw against the worst team in the league. Then Cardiff, who were already relegated beat us. And Ole had a big smile on his face following each of those matches.

And people are glad we are getting rid of Smalling. Lindelof won't cut it in the PL. We need someone as commanding as Smalling as well because Lindelof is such a weak link.
Smalling will make us worse imo.

I said it the end of last season during the poor run and still think it’s true, this team hasn’t even hit rock bottom yet. What’s it going to take at this stage? A below mid table finish and for Pool to win the league before there is some actual positive change at the top

What doesn't make sense after listening to Solskjear in the post match conference is that he said we are still figuring out how to break teams down but we have actually had the lead against wolves and Southampton so why would breaking teams down be the issue? Its holding onto leads that is the issue and something that were guilty of at the back end of last season as well and it's trait expected of side in the bottom half of the premier league.

It's control in midfield that's the issue once the team is ahead. Neither Pogba nor McTominay knows how to control a match's tempo and rhythm from midfield. It's something that's been missing for 5 years now, control in the middle. I'm not even talking about assists or runs, McTominay put in some lovely first time passes forwards today, Pogba would have had two assists with a top CF in the team. It's about midfielders who can take the ball and move and keep possession while the team gradually throttles the other one.

at least no one missed a penalty today

on a serious note, wish Ole took more risk after 1-1.. especially vs 10 men

I hope international break will give Ole and his staff a to reset a few buttons and to tune the team before Leicester City.

I bet if it was up to Ole, he would get rid of more deadwood. However, he cannot count on current board to bring in 10 players. That being said, more deadwood will depart once we bring in some players in. At least we reduced our wage bill, so we should be able to attract top players once we secure champions league spot as well.

Things won't change over night. We are on the right path for recovery. We are probably 2-3 seasons away from being a top team again, not one summer...

Felt like Pogba was much better when moved forward. In that short spell he played Rashford through a couple of times. Mctominay and maybe Fred should play behind him. Mata was really good at finding space but he just can’t move the ball or himself quickly enough.

Rashford just doesn’t have a goal scorers instinct. James and Wan-Bissaka both put in two or three great crosses between them in the last 15 minutes but rashford wasn’t in the right place. The exact position Martial got into and scored from against Chelsea.

this from Phil McNulty sums up my feelings but no doubt those who think Pogba is Christ risen will says he's a bad writer. truth of matter is he's a top journailst who's seen a lot my games than most here: he also points out we haven't won away from home sing PSG (I did say at the time, I hoped we weren't celebrating too little too early. I was probably as guilty as most, though!)

"Juan Mata had little influence, while Paul Pogba produced the sort of display that frustrates so many, conceding possession countless times and his efforts paling in comparison to those of the likes of James and McTominay."

I have to add.. that I reckon Lukaku would have got on the end of at least one of them.... (off to buy my hard hat, I can feel the abuse coming)

Kinell the doom and gloom on this thread is boring. “Ole out rashford out pogba out lingard out”. Yawn. You lot want instant success and gratification and if we’re not playing like City then we’re the shittest team in the league. Glad the caf wasn’t up when Frrgie started.
Don't think any sane fan would compare us to City, we're more a mid-table team than a contender for the league.

Not even going to comment about the game, all I want to know is what the feck do we do in training?!
That is quite an important question actually. Do we practice of the ball movement, getting out of relentless pressing? Do we practice attacking patterns? Why on Earth would you play Mason on right wing, when he is the best finisher at the club?

The functional issues we are having all stem from two problems:

1. In a 4-2-3-1 the most important player is the number 10. Our number 10s are Mata, Lingard, and potentially 18 year old Gomes. This is not good enough, and will ultimately lead to a lot of problems breaking teams down.

2. We have a lack of control in midfield. Our 10 does contribute much of anything to ball retention, and our 8 isn’t careful enough with the ball.

The only currently workable solution I can see is we have to draft Fred - 55m pound Fred - into central midfield alongside McTominay, and push Pogba to 10.

I've been thinking that - it's not even the same half from one week to the next...
Last season it was often blamed on low fitness levels, maybe with some justification.
Of the games I have watched this season, nothing much has changed.
Those who are concerned over the standard of coaching have a valid point.
We need to forget about so called world class players and recruit world class coaches.

Am I the only who doesn't celebrate when we score goals anymore? I feel like Stockholm syndrome has set in, where I'm forced to follow these absolute chancers claiming to be Manchester United, an absolute disgrace to Busby and Fergusons legacy. I wouldn't mind if they knew they were mediocre and modest players, I'd forgive them somewhat but you have chancers like Lingard flogging his 18 euro aftershave playing for the same club that 15 years ago Beckham was kicked out of for not being up to the standard. I hate them all. Even Promising young players like Rashford are playing like FIFA Pro Clubbers and being greedy bastards with the ball and not giving a feck about winning it back when they lose it.

We have been asking for this since that mirage of a run last season where we won a dozen games. We kept players who should have been sold and let a goal scorer and a defender who can actually defend go because we want to play fancy football out from the back. Every team will target Lindelof to be their b!t** because he cant win a header.

Yea we kept the ball, but their is simply no difference maker who can open up a locked defense. It's going to be a very hard season and I would be surprised if we finish in the top 6 at the end of the day. Cannot wait till we see the end of Woody.

Need someone will a long term view on how we should be playing and recruiting.

It’s about that for sure and building on a goal lead. We recede into the netherzone because we lack a spine and the nous. Very frustrating.
