Again, disgusting revelations getting virtually no significant coverage in the press.

Shocking but not surprising is unfortunately a perfect summation.

I'm wondering if this belongs in the Bloody Sunday thread? It'll get lost in amongst all the posts here, and non-NI posters may not care about a generic NI thread?

That clip is amazing. Firstly he's a great Ian Paisley impersonator - top marks there. Secondly, he's got a solid 10/10 for blind hatred in his chat. And lastly, he's mad as fcuk wildly rocking about thon stage.

Our wee country.
Free P's are completely and utterly bonkers - in a horribly right-wing, 1600's values kind of way. Would be fine it there were a small crazy church that has no influence (and in many ways that is exactly what they are) if it wasnt for the fact that 90% of the DUP attend it and actively get policy ideas from it's doctrine.

Not remotely surprised by this - I've heard horror stories (from people who were there) from when UK soldiers were in Iraq and some of the horrific shit they got up to there so not only did it happen in NI during the 70's and 80's - it's still happening now.

No one will be surprised if its true but if people were being executed in the Barracks then obviously this and other incidents weren't just a case of a group of ''soldiers'' losing control and murdering civilians. Their Officers must have known about and turned a blind eye to these actions and the trail of those complicit with these murders might not even end with those officers.

And its sickening that some British politicians are trying to give these animals more protection from prosecution, like they haven't had enough already. Almost 50 years later and only one of them is on trial for murder.

The problem with the Ballymurphy massacre is it should have been investigated immediately at the time. The bad apple argument put forward over the years by british army supporters isn't acceptable. This was a bad barrel. The Paras went in there that day with the premeditated intention to kill. There was instructions from higher up to quell any support that was starting to gather for the republican movement. It was a twin approach adopted by the UDR at the time in Armagh and Tyrone. Both regiments given carte blanche to kill innocent civilians so as to kill support for the IRA. UDR/RUC in connection with loyalist paramilitaries killed 120 people in armagh/Tyrone from 72-78 with no convictions, all innocent victims. Para's should have been under immediate investigation for the actions in Ballymurphy, instead of 50 yrs later. Had they been under investigation, then they as a regiment would have been walking on eggshells, instead they went to Derry and doubled down, killing more innocent victims in Bloody Sunday. The problem with this British military intelligence policy of killing innocent victims to quell support for the IRA is that in fact it did exactly the opposite. The biggest problem is when moderates move to extremism and that is exactly what happened at that time. People with no pre paramilitary involvement or affiliation where joining up due to the carnage they were seeing. The problem is we will never get to know the people who were directing it. This court case will give the families comfort, and there may even be some token convictions, but as usual the real architects of this won't be punished or even known.

From everything i've read and been told by family members who were alive at the time i definitely believe these massacres were an attempt as you say to break the people of Nationalist Belfast and Derry. Which just goes to show that they didn't understand Ireland or Irish people. Because as you also pointed out it did the exact opposite and lead to the IRA gaining support. Without these two incidents the Troubles most likely wouldn't have lasted as long as they did or been as bloody.

We'll never know who was behind it all but it wouldn't surprise me if the idea came from the very top levels of British Government/Military/Intelligence.

Viable device found under police officer's car in east belfast today.

Looks like things will deteriorate again in our country.

We utterly condemn this attempt to murder one of our @PoliceServiceNI colleagues. Once again we see the recklessness of terrorists who have nothing to offer any of us except misery.#weareyou @ChiefConPSNI @NIPolicingBoard @BBCNewsNI @julianoneill

As it stands, these dissidents are the biggest stumbling block in any efforts towards a United Ireland.

Civil servant ‘offended by portrait of the Queen got £10,000 compensation’

https://www.newsletter.co.uk/news/p...f-the-queen-got-10-000-compensation-1-8996076

This is just fecking ridiculous.
Lord Maginnis went on: “He suggested that the portraits of Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh should be replaced with photographs of, at best, the Queen meeting people during engagements in Northern Ireland.

“One such photograph features Her Majesty the Queen shaking hands with the former deputy first minister, Martin McGuinness, at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast.

“I do not mind that; what I mind is that the case brought by the complainant was settled secretly and that the sum of £10,000 was handed over, presumably for hurt feelings and distress.
He added: “This is scandalous. It is an indictment of the Northern Ireland Office and of this government.

“We have lost all sense of reality when a portrait of Her Majesty can cause offence to a civil servant but we do not bat an eyelid when we deny closure and justice to unfortunate people who have been abused in the most outrageous manner imaginable.

“I urge the Northern Ireland Office not only to restore the original portraits of Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh but to expedite payment of the comparatively paltry compensation due to the people who are more deserving than this opportunistic civil servant who, surely, must now be compromised in his position in the Parades Commission because of his bigoted stance over the Royal Family.
Strange it seems like he does mind it.

I would have thought an organisation like the Parades Commission should have a fairly neutral environment.

Some baptism of fire for that new Chief Constable. What a daft thing to say even though I believe him when he says that wasn’t his intention. Just listening to 5 minutes of that policing board meeting on the news last night and you have to wonder if there will ever be normality in the North.

The idiots thankfully aren’t very good at their job are they
I think the intention wasn't to murder it was a "we are still hear you know".

It was just a fecking stupid thing to say, trying to act hard in his stance against paramilitaries but acting like he is in some Laim Neeson movie. Just simply say if you are found to be a member of a prescribed organisation we will arrest and prosecute you. That's not to mention how much of a mess our care system is in, it would probably do more harm than good. Don't even start me on what I think of the PSNI as a force it is totally inadequate for the job in hand, its not the individual officers fault but they simply cant do the job they should.

To answer your question, no there wont ever be "normality" here and Brexit is just accelerating it.

For most of us in the North it is hugely closer to normal than at any stage in the last hundred years.

I’m in the North/NI and yes day to day life is different but politically and at grass root republican and Unionist extremes has thoughts and beliefs really changed? If we are honest with ourselves here it really hasn’t.

Politicians are for the most part idiots the world over and most definitely over here.
There are a small but significant number of extremist idiots on both sides that make a lot of noise but would not be representative of ordinary people imo. I take your point that Brexit has the potential to unsettle a hard earned peace though and will play into their hands.

Trust me, I’m a 30 something, I grew up in a loyalist area shouting SS RUC at the police but never really knew what it was all about. I live in a town with union flags on one side and republican and hunger striker pictures shown on the other. Things haven’t changed, loyalist paras are active and recruiting but mainly for collecting and drugs, both loyalists and republicans are itching for a reason to hurt people.

The people who want to get back into this aren’t small, they are just getting paid to keep it within there own communities. The IRA in what ever form, and the INLA are still there the prods will react, like they have always done. Hey his is probably the highest risk moment there has ever been.

Our politicians? Are no better, and il be honest I’m related to some personally.

The failure of the government to ensure that loyalists terrorist actually disbanded has definitely empowered them to continue with their criminality. Unionist politicians have courted and legitimised them and must share the blame for their continuation.. Thankfully drug dealing and extortion are more a priority for them atm than their random sectarian bloodlust of the past.

I can tell you as someone from a staunchly republican town that whilst there is serious frustration on the lack of implementation of previous agreements there is very little support for dissident republicans, tiny compared to 20 years ago and there is no appetite at all for a return to the past.

I don’t think that most people in nationalist areas ever had any great loyalty to what the IRA did, the demonstrations of *not in our name* proved that.

What I will say is people in loyalist areas now is that they do support their *own* paramilitaries actions. I don’t try to be negative but I do know the UVF are still actively recruiting, but it is about drugs and keeping foreign nationalists out more than anything. It really does scare me that people think a United ireland will go down easy, it won’t. Sadly I think we will go back before we go forward. I love NI, but probably for different reasons you do. But I do respect why nationalists want a UI. I probably didn’t word this very well.

Loyalist terrorists rule by fear and intimidation like all gangs do. Like the dissidents they are scum of the earth.
They fear a real peace more than anyone as their smokescreen of "community protection" would fall away. They need strife between communities to allow a blind eye to be given to their criminality.

The chance for a NI that could have been home to most of both traditions was tantalising close under Paisley and Maginess but the return to unionist supremacism by Arlene and now Brexit has as good as ended that chance.

While I understand what you say your wrong. Loyalist paras are the last hope of the working class again. I don’t agree, but I understand why they turn to them. Ok happily say why and my experience but don’t wanna derail the post
